I played Gungrave: Overdose on PS2, but that was before I was remotely good at games. I am tentatively excited, if for no other reason than nostalgia.

Tbh I never played the ps2 game, but I loved the anime after blindly buying the series boxed set in high school.

Wait, isn't Gungrave the game where you could beat basically every level by mashing the shoot button while slowly walking forward? I distinctly remember it being a regretted rental.

Well you definitely continuously shoot, but in the game I played, there was definitely more to it than that. Not only where there boss fights and such, it's also one of those games with a style system, I think, so walking forward and shooting might get you through the level, but not get you a very good score.

I find the supporting opinions for the game tend to reflect a hype marketing machine that never turned off, but when people critique the echo chamber environment set in motion years ago by Kojima himself (and subsequently milked by Konami to this day with zombie metal gear) they are usually dismissed with the flaccid argument that MGSV 'fixed' all the things that were broken with the series up to that point. It didn't fix them, it just didn't include them at all. So in my mind it isn't a Metal Gear game regardless of how polished the mechanics are or how huge the marketing budget is. Without the things that made the Metal Gear series distinct in the past MGSV just comes off as more open-world military porn with bad fast-travel.

MGS5 should have had a mission creator. It seems like it would be trivial to pick a spot on a map, place enemies and objectives, and have people go at it.

I actually really liked the first 10 hours of the game, and I acknowledge that the meta of a game that is clearly unfinished (under duress at a horrible publisher) being related to a phantom limb is clever, if not clever enough. At this point I find the ARG of Hideo Kojima's media-verse that we all exist in more interesting than his games. I've been excited for and subsequently disappointed by his games since 2005, after loving the poo poo out of MGS3.

I don't care as much about the story stuff knowing the 'real world' factors behind it, but GZ alone is still a blast to replay on its own. Same for a chunk of the main ones like Bees, Rescue Hal, Rescue Talker, Rescue Kids. Which is more than I can say for PW, which had utterly forgettable gameplay/story both despite being much more polished and complete. (it was a portable game but many folks prefer it to V which I don't get). Can someone mod all the audio/plot stuff from PW into V's engine and then all the Hayters could be happier.

In that regard, it's a step up from MGS4, which was neither a good movie or videogame. Peace Walker was funny because it is literally the game where we are explicity told that we are the bad guys, and like 3/4th of the fandom still think we didn't get to see the "fall" of intrepid superasshole Big "I AM A GUN" Boss.

Phantom Pain does playing with a wide range of toys and playstyles really well. It belly flops in many other aspects of the game, like the level design never living up to Camp Omega or the narrative overcorrecting from 4. I also think it's a real shame it gave you these large conflict zones without having any early-MGS4-style conflicts that you could help control. Those first 2 Acts of MGS4 have some of my favorite segments to play in an MGS game and it's a shame to see such a missed opportunity.

Single Player Battlefront is a disjointed disappointment, and lasts four hours at best. They recently released three extra single player missions as free DLC, which were incredibly phoned in and one of them might be the worst shooter level I've ever played.
