I was reading about Venezuela and Hugo Chavez and I saw that when he was consolidating power in the country one of the things he did was destroy the power of labor unions. This forum used to have tons of people who loved Chavez, how did they justify actions like that?

Probably they had no idea, Venezuela was not really the spotlight of the world, information sort of just filtered through whenever Chavez would do something notable, which was usually pissing off America

Chavez basically ran a caudillo style government but one that spent money on poor people, and that's what libs think socialism is.

quote:

However, colectivos have been described as armed gangs or paramilitary groups by many organizations, with Human Rights Watch describing them as "armed gangs who use violence with impunity" who harass political opponents of the Venezuelan government. Colectivos have been accused of attacking Venezuelan opposition TV staff, sending death threats to journalists, and tear-gassing the Vatican envoy in 2009 after Hugo Chávez accused them of intervening with his government.

That is nothing praiseworthy

American leftists are so brokebrained about unions they think they are bad as a rule because the US local system is bad.

between this and George Weah winning the Liberian presidential election, it's a good time for right-wing former athletes. i wonder if Curt Schilling has decided to run for US senate

tbqf there is a lot of internal dynamics of modern Brazilian politics that will make no sense to an outside pov (and make no sense to a formal internal pov either)

Romário (yes him) went into the Senate through a "right-wing approach" so to speak and did some... rather progressive policies and was one of the few that had a 100% voting participation and financial disclosure

I like to compare Chavez to Huey Long. Neither was a true socialist, neither was a truly good man (prone to grandiosity, corruption, and authoritarianism), but both of them actually cared about poor people and both of them INVESTED in poor people. All those bridges and roads in LA didn't build themselves. All those people in extreme poverty were/are eternally grateful that somebody stood up for them, at least for a while.

And if you look at the context behind each, they both came out of corrupt systems (and left behind corrupt systems), but they were at least able to expand suffrage to the poorest people.

The Maduro government stays afloat purely on the good will cultivated by Chavez, but it's questionable just how long that can last.

Poverty and extreme poverty dropped sharply when Chavez took power and rose after he died. So what you said is objectively loving wrong.
