The financial side of things looks like a headfuck for the lawyers. If CIG is told to pay royalties could they legitimately argue they've not actually made any money yet?

There's no way they aren't going to free the trainwreck for the Holiday sale. That would be so out of character for CIG.

alphabettitouretti posted:The financial side of things looks like a headfuck for the lawyers. If CIG is told to pay royalties could they legitimately argue they've not actually made any money yet? Licensing fees would depend on negotiations. Since there was no GLA to cover SQ42, that means no such thing exists. Obviously this is where CryTek gets the upperhand because they can negotiate on very favorable terms if they win the case in this particular claim. They are not asking for money on the GLA they signed for Star Citizen, as that's already paid up. They are asking for damages on the two breaches (IP, contract), neither of which has anything to do with royalties. Now, if they DO settle (IMO it's a slim to none change of happening), then they could do cash plus backend royalties kind of thing. I personally hope they settle because I want them to crash and burn as we've been expecting, without there being a cloud that CryTek was the cause, regardless of whether or not the case went to trial or settled. ----------------

And just in time for the ELE no less.Spiderdrake posted:I'm sure you guys have all discussed this to death, so I've tried to understand this thread without looking at more wikipedia pages, since the weird jumble of marketing speak and bizarre half-finished ideas makes my head ache or asking endless stupid questions since most of the answers are "no, they are that inept". In my ignorance I naively assumed based on tone and context that Pusher was the thread complaining about a emotionless robot in the cutscenes that pushed the ships around on the flight deck. I could completely envision that, within the context of Star Citizen, the game would be designed around watching a robot push ships around. Now I'm thinking of how there was literally a bulldozer in the godawful Wing Commander movie to push ships off the deck (that fell downwards despite, you know, space) in one of the most 'dramatic' scenes. Kind of funny that of the people involved in making that movie, Freddie Prinze Jr. has had more success going forward than Roberts himself.

Oh come on now, Derek, you and I both know that the backers will try to pin any failure of SC on this lawsuit now. "Ugh, SC would have been fine if CIG hadn't had to pay Crytek out of court, it's all Crytek's fault!" Even if CIG miraculously won the lawsuit and somehow got full costs, they'd still find a way to pin the blame on this lawsuit, likely something like "the lawsuit distracted them too much!" or something equally asinine.

drat with that hobo saying that SC/SQ42 always were two different games that would mean that CIG would have to pay licensing for every reservation made, not just the ones from the split.

I considered doing the same for spectrum, but setting up a logging bot for something that's dying anyway prevented me from doing it, but I really wonder what the stats there look like right now. No, that's not how that works. If they settle, or the they go to trial and the jury rules in their favor, then it's just a licensing fee to cover SQ42. The damages are a much - much - bigger issue. ----------------

Just heard about the lawsuit. Interestingly it would seem like neither company has enough money for any kind of prolonged legal action. Maybe the law firm is hoping to get some sweet Amazon dollars out of this? I just imagine Amazon using CIG the way Arnold uses the guy on the escalator. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icuJc2LxfGM&t=78s Maybe we will see a Bengal sale?

Everybody else is buying stuff for Star Citizen. Star Citizen's original Thing was a primarily-singleplayer game, effectively "what Elite Dangerous became" with but with a single-player campaign in front of the sandbox post-game. I would not disagree that at this point everyone who wanted that game has refunded or left in the face of the MMO-but-not-really it's become, but don't forget that what a lot of people wanted in the first place was "Tie Fighter but with 2010+ graphics", and the drop in coop and local multiplayer were just unnecessary gravy for the people like B'tak who never play online multiplayer anyways. e: Speaking of dreams, even thinking about that again just makes me depressed because that's legitimately what I'd like to see. Instead, I'll probably boot up Elite Dangerous and have some fun flying around and pretending like there's a coherent, playable single-player plot for an hour or two. I thought they might have a bit more sense than that. See friend, this is where the animation department and audio department need to kick it into full burn. Some courageous people need to take all this Sandi data, and transform it into an AAA grade performance. So now that you realize that, it may be more understandable why Sq42 is so late. They have an almost impossible task, and you drat well know Sandi and Chris are breathing down their neck to see something amazing from her data.
