I know that the casino planet was explicitly for the galaxy's richest people, but I honestly was bummed because Star Wars is great at grungy, weird environments and in most cases actual casinos are dirty and depressing. Would have been much cooler than space Monaco.

I guess what I'm saying is give me space Atlantic City.

I found the Casino side plot, Holdo-Poe, need the code breaker stuff to just be filler

They could just have flown their cloaked transport ship over to Snoke's ship and picked up right there. Cut a good 30-45 minutes out of the movie where not much happens.

Didn't the code breaker just allow them to get by their scanners? We are shown the person tapping on their screen as the come in like their scanner is acting funny.

They have cloaked transport ships. No need for a code breaker.

If Rian and Disney are saying those aren’t the Knights than I apologize for being rude about it. I thought it was another JJ MYSTERY Rian was quashing and I thought Luke’s line about Ren taking some students with Him when he left + the throne room fight with weapons that seemed similar to the TFA flashback supported that but again, apologies.

Serious question: does gender discrimination even exist in the Star Wars universe? The First Order and the Resistance has women soldiers and officers in multiple levels of command. I actually can't think of any obvious gender discrimination in the films - maybe Jabba and the general lack of women soldiers in the OT?

You can’t think of any gender discrimination in Star Wars where until the sequels there hadn’t been a female hero lead who wasn’t designated to a queen or a princess or a princess in a metal bikini?

Even though luke and leia are twins yet Luke is called the one and not the half and it would make sense to also train his twin sister?

The initial mistrust for no reason is the misogyny welcome to the patriarchy which is fascism which is what Star Wars is all about destroying thanks for playing, cuck.

How so? She doesn't report to Poe.

Incidentally, like two scenes later the characters talk about the importance of need-to-know planning. In their case they use it to justify lying to superior officers, stealing equipment, and deserting.

There is no initial mistrust until she doesn't reveal the plan. She's dismissive of him at first and he's annoyed about it but doesn't distrust her at that point.

I mean don't get me wrong I'm not "Team Poe" or anything and think they were both in the wrong but this whole "it's about how Poe is a misogynist" thing isn't supported by the actual text as it exists. I guess it does in the version you wish you saw, but that isn't the movie playing in cinemas right now

I mean, yeah there's background levels 1970s/80s era basic sexism sure, but that's basically piped in from the pulp inspirations. And with the Luke/Leia thing, she's kind of got her own thing going on what with the Rebel stuff (I think Leia's role in ANH actually is pretty progressive for the time).

I'm not saying there's no sexism present in the films, just that in-universe it doesn't really seem to be a thing.

Poe isn't a misogynist, his entitlement comes from him thinking he's entitled to the information because he's got heroic gumption.

Holdo is under no obligation to share compartmentalized information with a demoted officer.

Maybe. I think the movie supports both views. I think they movie definitely uses her appearance and gender to have the audience question her motives.

Doesn't Luke try and convince Leia to be a jedi in ROTJ and she says something like "I could never do what you do"? It seemed like she didn't care about the force. In TLJ it's apparent that she did learn a few things over time, if not with Luke's guidance.

Not quite. Luke is explaining that he has to go and face Vader / Palpatine and Leia says that she doesn't have his power and can't take his place as a figure in the rebellion. Luke responds saying that she is wrong, because she is his sister.

I don't agree with blow up doll guy for the most part but at best Star Wars has only had pretty bullshit token feminism up to now. Like, all the evil imperial officers are sneering old white men and the rebels were a diverse cast of women and minorities and aliens, but the two best coolest heroes in the galaxy are white guys, with women mostly delegated to administrative roles. No one ever wanted to be Mon Mothma growing up and Leia has to be rescued in every movie she's in.

But you can also agree with the politics of the new movies and still think the casino plot is a joyless slog that should've been cut entirely? I feel like posters are conflating quality of basic storytelling and amount you agree with a movie politically itt

I agree with this, and it makes gender, sexuality and political readings tricky because “Poe is not communicated clearly to be a sexist” is just an opinion on art and not actually “sexism is right”

I hadn't made that connection, that's cool.

I really loved Luke seeing R2 again. Mark Hamill plays it perfectly; you can see old man Luke forget himself and the boyish Luke erupt out. He's fantastic in that scene; in the whole movie, really. I'm comfortable saying this is his best performance.

And the Leia hologram was perfect. I had the same reaction Luke did: "That's a cheap shot." And then after a few seconds "but drat, it's really working on me."

Holdo's plan was better than nothing but it was inadequate.. It relied on the Outer Rim allies who chickened out because they aren't heroes in the way that Poe, Finn, Rose, and Anakin are. They are Chancellor Valorums.

So I heard a good point someone brought up, the resistance ships slowed down when they ran out of fuel, why? Shouldn't they keep going the same speed if they are in space or am I misunderstanding how space and momentum work?

If both the groups are constantly accelerating, one of them ceasing acceleration and maintaining a constant velocity means that the one still accelerating will catch up. If they run out of fuel, they can't accelerate anymore.

I'm almost 100% sure this is not how the movie actually portrays things happening, and really it's just continuing the idea that "space is an ocean".
