I liked the scene where it’s raining on Luke’s island and Rey has this look of wonder on her face as she sticks her hand out into it. Growing up on Jakku, that’s probably the first time she’s ever seen rain.

I actually kinda loved almost everything on the island, and the kinda slow meandering way it just let Luke/Rey and Rey/Kylo develop these realistically muddled relationships. I even thought the little jokey creature bits worked well because they were spaced out and low-key (during one establishing shot I literally thought "If Lucas were directing this a porg would be in the foreground running and tripping over a rock or some bullshit") and I really liked how surreal and vague they made the Force (with the meta commentary that shits on the prequels when Rey thinks its all mind tricks and throwing rocks).

I hate to get all ~tactical realist~ but the suicide run didn't bother me that much because presumably its been done before in-universe (even if we never see it,) and it only actually managed to get pulled off this time because the rebel mothership had a couple advantages the smaller ships did not: Hux hyperfocusing on the transports, aiming his firepower elsewhere, and also being a big and beefy enough ship on its own that when they actually started firing on it, it could weather the assult long enough to get lined up.

That’s not what we were saying. We were saying Poe didn’t have a right to the information like he thought he did because he’s not the boss, she is, and his initial unfounded bias towards her was sexist.

After watching a second time tonight thru work I’ve warmed up to the movie. It’s good but far from perfect. It ranks on par with Rogue One but elevated by its action set pieces and Kylo Ren. I still think it should have been Leia sacrificing it all but understand why it was impossible. The movie is overly bloated tho and while the casino planet was neat I don’t think it should have been in there.

Also still think Snoke and Phasma were water but we’ll see what’s in store for the next one. Kylo being the big bad doesn’t sit right - could be fan biting over him tho.

I don't agree with blow up doll guy for the most part but at best Star Wars has only had pretty bullshit token feminism up to now. Like, all the evil imperial officers are sneering old white men and the rebels were a diverse cast of women and minorities and aliens, but the two best coolest heroes in the galaxy are white guys, with women mostly delegated to administrative roles. No one ever wanted to be Mon Mothma growing up and Leia has to be rescued in every movie she's in.

But you can also agree with the politics of the new movies and still think the casino plot is a joyless slog that should've been cut entirely? I feel like posters are conflating quality of basic storytelling and amount you agree with a movie politically itt

Seems like that’s us agreeing for the most part. Where don’t we agree? Are you just trying to safely distance yourself from be because you think I gently caress dolls and you have some sort of judgement on that?

...huh? The post I quoted brought up an interesting point about the Resistance and how it’s portrayed. So far I think R1 is the only portrayal of a Rebellion or guerilla Resistance group that matches our modern understanding of what that might look like

It’s unarguably interesting that the temporary leader of a radical separatist group is a member of the bourgeoisie who keeps secrets from the working class but nevertheless ends up leading the resistance to a place where they begin driving IEDs into the empire and hiding in the mountains, it’s great

Went to a screening where Rian did a q and a after. Have some details maybe you’d be interested in:

He has complete creative control of the movie.

The creative group loved his first draft and pretty much told him to just go with that.

He has to run everything mythology/lore/force wise by a guy who has been there since the George days and was described as the keeper of the keys. That guy basically said he could do whatever with the force as long as it served the story.

Branching off on this he talked about how we have seen something different with the force every movie and we didn’t see anyone move something with the force until empire. For this movie he wanted to do something really big and with leia because we hadn’t seen her really DO anything with the force yet.

He said Carrie was a blast to work with and would dance and waltz with cast members when takes finished.

He said that he didn’t feel it was necessary to spend the minute or two giving snope a backstory because it wouldn’t serve the story because this movie’s story isn’t about snope. He then compared it to empire and said in empire you don’t know poo poo about the emperor just that everyone thinks he’s bad so he’s bad. He really only wanted things in the movie that pushed the story or rather served the story.

He described some sort of triangle of characters and an angel and a devil on each of their shoulders which were like what they wanted and what they feared and he tried to cross pollenate these or switch them or pit them against each other. I’m admittedly doing a bad job retelling this part.

Everything on Luke island was shot in two days. The island is a puffin sanctuary and that’s where the idea for the Porgs came from.

His entire team was also at the q and a and he was allowed to bring them aboard the movie and has worked with them for almost all of his movies.

If I remember anything else I’ll post it.

She had the right to withold information but it was still inadequate leadership for the situation.

Lets look at the situation:

-Everyone is 6 hours from certain death and she responds with silence.

- She wasn't Poe's commanding officer until Leias bogus journey, she was the captain of a different ship. Even hardened real life soldiers have difficulty adjusting to sudden changes and carrying out difficult orders from a stranger.

-Despite being a formal military, these are unpaid volunteer freedom fighters and she holds their lives in her hand.

-the situation is so tense that she assigns a tech with a stun gun to guard the escape pods (which is probably the same as the First Orders escape pod policy.) Poe's paranoia is further justified in that her actual plan is to abandon ship.

-There are maybe less than 1000 rebels alive, she's not Eisenhower commanding D-day, shes commaning a batallion.

Some slackening of officer segregation is called for.

The point is that it’s entirely accurate. Holdo is a white-collar boss type, and that does make her a better fit for Resistance leadership than Poe.

What people are failing at is the necessary step back where we say “what good is the Resistance? What do they stand for?”

I just saw this again tonight and I now feel secure in ranking it as my second fave star wars knowing that I wasn't just fanboying over Luke being cool and the twists and all.

I just really love it turning the star wars world a bit more gray. Luke admitting his gut reaction to kylo and making his story not a lie was surprising but added to him well. Snoke getting slashed was satisfying even if his "I see you using your lightsaber to cut your true foe down" was a bit on the nose. I liked the doubts both he and Rey showed really worked well together.
