As the whole scheme seems to be winding down (or is the lawsuit the start of a new chapter?) I’ve been thinking a lot about endings. Because if there is going to be a ending to this thing, there are going to be a lot of lasts. Many of them we’ll never get to know, their contributions will be hidden in confidential files and other dark places unlikely ever to see the light of day. Here are some soon to be unsung figures and moments. Are they in the future or the past? * The last person to ever pledge. Probably a whale, desperate to fund this thing past the ever receding finish line. This person is probably in the future. * The last person to buy (and the last person to sell) a grey market ship. * The last new person to buy in to Star Citizen. This person is the most interesting to me. Not the invested fools trying to untangle themselves from sunk cost fallacy, but the last person to come to this thing fresh and think “yeah, sounds good, I’m in.” Maybe this person is already known. Maybe SC exhausted its ability to attract new money ages ago. Or maybe there are still new citizens to come. Maybe it’ll be The Titanic. * The last person to check in code to the SC/SQ42 repository. * The cast and crew of the last ‘Round the Verse. * The last SC stream. * The last Chris Roberts stage appearance. * The last PC Gamer cover story. * The last Spectrum post. * The last version number. * The last concept ship.

Chris Roberts will make a movie about me. Sandi will take the leading role as me.

SpaceCurtisLeMay posted:I was the same way. I saw Privateer the MMO and had no idea about freelancer until the fans of that game began to show up in 2013. Sometime around 2013 or 2014 I found a copy of Freelancer at an estate sale for $1 and loaded it up to play it and went: "WTF is this poo poo". Then suddenly the whole mouse aim thing became apparent and there were two very different fan bases wanting to very different games delivered in terms of the feel of flight. Most of the original backers I felt were like myself and fans of the 90's era Wing Commander, Xwing Series, and Freespace games. Hence the Controller Katamari thread that went on for years until finally in summer of 2015 we asked for them to explain how the flight model was going to work...and they couldn't. They gave us a write up about different flight "modes", but not how the game was supposed to feel. Elite went with nerfed yaw to make it more like airplanes in space because they thought it was more fun. You can argue about not liking that control scheme, but you can't say that Frontier didn't nail what they were aiming for, but they knew what they were aiming for where as CIG never did. I saw how they leveraged the old guard vs the new guard (LTI) and it disgusted me. Then they put all that pressure on that end of Nov sale and said it would never come back. They came down hard on moderation and brought back LTI. What finished me was the TOS change blocking me from the game and removing all accountability.

Put a new PSU + GTX 970 in 2014 in it and still running it. Newer machines aren't that much faster than the 3.4ghz Xeon in it. I was going to put a new GPU in it this year, but the whole bitcoin madness has raised prices to the point that I'm not interested in spending that much on a now 5 year old computer. It runs everything that I can throw at it just fine.

Loxbourne posted:This isn't as knee-jerk as it sounds. The citizens probably really DID perceive Derek's words as INSERT AUTISTIC SCREECHING HERE. They don't process the content of the media they consume, they process the emotions it made them feel. No citizen can remember what Ben or Chris or Tony said in episode 172 of Reverse the Hearse two years ago. But they can remember a powerful, idolised man told them he would give them their dreams, and that's all that registered in their brains. Does something make them feel hyped and pumped for Star Citizen? It goes in the GOOD category, is welcomed into their worldview, and the theorycrafting begins about how awesome this will be. Does something make them feel nervous or anxious or attacked? Then it goes in the BAD category and cannot be allowed to be real, ever. Not only is this hugely insightful and genuinely helpful, it's actually quite frightening. To be fair you see this to an extent in many communities - and the classic idea of building yourself a solid base of X number of 'superfans' buying all of your poo poo every year is well known and pretty much essential. But a part of it you don't see in other communities is the outright attacks in every single place within the public arena where Star Citizen is mentioned, and I'm not joking when I say *every single place* That's what puts them over the edge and into a cult for me, and what seals the deal is that at the centre of the cult lies a core of absolute bullshit that is not based in reality. I have no trouble calling Star Citizen a cult and I have no issue calling the project a scam.

They blame console gamers - as a concept of a specific group, not actual people - for "dumbing down" gaming and making the dream unobtainable. This stuff still gets stoked a lot by people who like to bitch about "PC ports" and shill you hardware. It's important to always remember that "Glorious PC master race" is, at least to my recollection, from a video where the person saying that is making fun of using a PC. These are people who think subtext is a font size.

As I lazily sip at a glass of bourbon, I can't help but spare a thought for the poor slaves at CIG working late into the cold, dark nights on a crude digital representation of Gillian Anderson. If they manage to get her in the holiday stream they might make another $4m. If they can make her speak they may raise $6m. If they can manufacture fake mo-cap of Mark Hammil slapping/grabbing her polygonal rear end, the game will be funded for the next decade. And there's the *rub*.

There is no reason to believe CIG can make a game, and the best I've seen is 'well they have 400 staff'. Show me the 400 staff CIG. Prove to everyone that the money is going to pay 400 wages. This is why everyone is expecting them to settle isn't it? Before the books get opened.
