The first one is a trashy b-movie made by a hack director. It's got its charms but the series has gone a long way since then

The Rock is awesome. Critics should shut up. Don't hold it against him if people call him the biggest star in the world, he isn't claiming it.

And although the role is perfect for him, he has got to flex his dramatic chops on Ballers and the results have been commendable.

Pain & Gain is awesome.

I remember when The Rock started getting into acting, Chris Jericho figured he could give it a shot too and auditioned for small roles in a bunch of movies.

He didn't get cast in any of them.

I cannot honestly figure out of Southland Tales is a good or bad film. It’s so, so, SO bad, but it’s so bad in so many specific ways that I have to wonder if the terribleness isn’t intentional. All the characters are idiots doing stupid things for inexplicable reasons. The movie doesn’t make a goddamn lick of sense unless you’ve read the three graphic novels that came out prior to the movie’s release. The high point of the movie is on the middle, and it’s a musical number starring Justin Timberlake but he’s not singing, he’s lip syncing to a Killers song. Wallace Shawn plays a mystical prophet. There’s a whole bunch of former Groundlings members playing “Neo-Marxists”. Kevin Smith plays an ex-army vet hacker who knows the explanation behind everything that’s going on... except Richard Kelly decided he didn’t like the expository nature of the scene so he cut most of it out of the film.

On the other hand, so much of the film is nigh-prophetic. There’s a parallel to PRISM. Krysta Now, the porn star who has a cable channel dedicated to her reality show, is a ham fisted, obvious Kardashian analog—but Keeping Up With The Kardashians didn’t start airing until a year after the movie came out. It’s almost as if Richard Kelly’s consciousness was dropped 10 years into the future for a couple hours and felt obliged to make a movie about as much of it as he could remember as a warning.

Did anyone watch Big Little Lies? It's not the kind of show I ever would have bothered with, but my wife wanted to try it after all the hype and award nominations. I realize I'm not the target audience, I can't say I LIKE it, and I hate all the characters except Adam Scott, but despite all that, it's really well done. We're almost done with the third of seven episodes, and I like the way it's framed -- almost like True Detective Season 1.

The couple of people I asked about it basically said that it was really well done but was basically just a really well done soap opera and wasn't really for me. They felt like I'd hate it if it wasn't so good but it might be good enough for me to enjoy. Which was a measured enough recommendation that its kind of on my long list but I'm not rushing to it over shows I think I'll enjoy more.

Big Little Lies was way better than I expected, especially in the second half. I’d definitely recommend it to people.

Although I kind of question anyone who hates every character except Adam Scott. You hate abuse victim Nicole Kidman and struggling teenage mother Shailene Woodley but manchild husband Adam Scott is cool?

To be honest, I wasn't even thinking about them. I was mostly thinking about how annoying Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern are in their flashier roles, and the other two didn't even come to mind at the moment. I just blanked -- my bad. But I hate Kidman's character's abusive husband, and I don't remember the last time I've wanted a character to get some horrible comeuppance this badly.

Metis of the Chat Thread

I think if you're on episode three of seven, it's reasonable to hate most of the characters, and yes to find Witherspoon and Dern frustrating. What I like about it is that early on you think it's a show about these shallow rich women obsessing over their children because they have nothing else in their lives -- but that's a surface reading that the show criticises as it goes on.

The final episode deals with this in a big way, but there's also a small moment later on that exemplifies it, when Shailene Woodley simply apologises and explains to Laura Dern what was happening, and Laura Dern accepts the apology and says sorry for her own part in things, and that's it! There's no sniping or bitching, they're both stressed mothers dealing with poo poo in their lives but can come to an understanding and then build a friendship from there. That's either in episode six or seven, I can't quite remember.

Anyway, I love Big Little Lies! Number one in my top ten list for sure.

Edit: haha I just looked at my post history in this thread and it is just a single page of me talking about Big Little Lies. What can I say, I'm a fan.

I thought Tokyo Drift was the worst one myself, although I enjoy the idea of the time travel shenanigans required to make it plausible to be the 6th movie chronologically.

The series as a whole gets a lot better once it stops trying to take itself seriously and realizes "these are action movies where we have cars instead of stuntmen." Which is strange that it took so long considering the first movie is Point Break But Cars Instead of Surfboards.

It’s good I agree. It is just the same people telling me how it’s the greatest action movie of like the last 10 years (myself I would say Raid 2 is) seem to also love the F&F movies.

That said I stand by F&F is not good at all. They are awful like lovely Michael Bay movies.

Finished Big Little Lies, and I admit it, it was good, even if I still disliked most of the women (not Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley's characters) and all the men except Adam Scott, a decent guy who got poo poo on by everyone. But I liked how in the end, they all worked out their differences, helped each other in a moment of crisis, and became friends.

John Wick 1 and 2 are among the best action movies of the 21st Century, alongside The Raid 1 and 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road. That's probably my top five. I can't think of anything else that even comes close to those, quality-wise.

It’s a complete love letter to 80s and 90s martial arts action movies, so if you don’t dig things like Hard Target and Rapid Fire it won’t be for you, but Ninja 2: Shadow of a Tear is up there for me. It hits all the tropes and does it all so well. No need to see the original either!

Covert Affairs was pretty great. Piper Perabo should be a huge TV star imo. She's a lot like Sarah Michelle Gellar in that she isn't super talented, like she's so oscar calibre actress, but she's charismatic as hell and that really works for the lead of a TV show.

Shame Perabo's second TV endeavour sucked.
