Adelaide Goons In mid-January I am organising a “Games and Cocktail Night” fundraising event for my local Greens branch. It will be held at The William Bligh, which is that small new rum bar in the East End. The plan is to play boardgames with some cocktails and good craft beer, and the funds raised will go towards the upcoming state election. If this sounds like the sort of thing you'd be interested in then come along! Good last minute Christmas present for that nerd in your life. The plan is to have branch members serving as “Game Valets” that will set up and run the games and make sure everyone is having fun all night. You don’t need to know any boardgame rules or bring a group with you, as you will be introduced to others and we will look after you the second you walk in the door. We're offering a complementary cocktail with each ticket and snacks and antipasto will be available on the night. It will be held at 6:30 on January 15th. RSVP and more details here if you're interested.

The sad thing is that our mental health support system is so reactionary. The driver suffered mental health problems to the extent of being placed on a mental health plan and was known to use Ice. You'd think he'd be identified and given help before he reached this point.

Police presser said he was filming the incident, was searched, found to have knives and arrested because of that... but it's "probable" he has nothing to do with the incident. So you have to wonder why he was searched for filming? Surely heaps of people were filming? My guess is that, since he was given as aged 24, he's the younger guy in the red flannel with the beard (not the guy in white shirt being pulled from the car) and was racially profiled.

I only have experience with QLD, but if anyone wants to know why mental health is reactionary, it's because there is an extremely high bar to pass before you can just put someone on treatment authority (formerly involuntary treatment order), which is actually cool because you shouldn't be able to arbitrarily lock anyone up just because they have mental health problems (it can happen but it's rare, both due to the bar and also due to very limited places). People can refuse Tx just like any other person as well, which complicates things. Oftentimes people with very acute mental health problems only get any form of Tx when they commit an offence and get assessed, but this obviously doesn't catch the people with acute mental health problems who don't commit any criminal acts (which are probably more common). The result is you get these chronically under-resourced mental health hospitals where an ever-rotating roster of people go through and are tossed to less acute settings (or prison!) as soon as someone more severe comes along. This has basically always been the case, and society has never really cared about mental illness unless some dude rams a loving car into a crowd and then suddenly woe is me what are we loving doing letting these raving lunatics out on the streets.

From memory the QLD law was (hopefully not still is) much more open to abuse than that of other states, in that any member of the public could request someone be assessed for an ITO (rather than for example VIC, where a medical practitioner, or a mental health professional working in a public health setting, can make a request) via the Justices Examination Order process. Edit: yep, looks like those were removed in the 2017 Mental Health Act.
