Yeah, is there any bitcoin investor who isn't speculative? As just pointed out, it is unstable, has no dividend or interest payout, and has no practical use value.

The bar example is hilarious. Why the gently caress would any rational retailer want the hassle of doing bitcoin returns?

Just to name a few of my favorite upcoming cryptos, you need to buy : SiaCoin(yes like the singer), BUM, GayCoin, PotCoin, FuckCoin, SexCoin, GoatseCoin, Clams, and BitBeans (which I’m sure will synergize with GasCoin 💨)

From today's Financial Times (UK):

"Financial Times" posted:

Bitcoin reached a peak of $19,666 on December 17. Friday’s lurch downwards was the biggest since the currency began its ascent from $1,000 at the start of this year.

In a sign of the tumult, Coinbase, the most popular US exchange, “temporarily disabled” buying and selling midway through the trading day, citing “today’s high traffic”.

It warned customers trying to withdraw funds into accounts denominated in euros to expect delays of up to 10 days owing to the “extremely high volume of transactions”.

Steven Englander of Rafiki Capital Management said the moves underlined “a fundamental problem in trying to pick a bottom price for bitcoin”.

“My guess is that there will be efforts to push bitcoin higher, and create a ‘buy the dip’ mentality,” he said. “But today’s moves reflect the issues that likely make the long-term equilibrium price much lower than today’s.”

"Financial Times" posted:

Data released on Friday by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission provided a new glimpse of the forces in the market. Its weekly report on futures positions showed that, as of Tuesday, small investors held nearly four bullish positions for every bearish one on Cboe. Their long positions constituted a third of the open interest in the market.

In contrast, professional traders — believed largely to be proprietary trading companies — held bearish positions four times the size of their bullish ones, with a total short position that was 65 per cent of open interest.

Hedge funds had only modestly entered the Cboe market, while Wall Street banks and asset managers were virtually absent, according to the report.

If the finance industry's known for one thing, it's a certain eagerness to make money. The fact that professional investors aren't touching this with a bargepole speaks volumes.

aaaaactually false! Ransomware as we know it (encrypt your poo poo, require money to decrypt) has existed since the 1990s. They used whatever means was available to get money, down to making an international phone call to a premium rate line, or buying a particular item off a particular website under their control. The first to use bitcoin was CryptoLocker, but even that had other options. It went really big only in 2015, when there was a malware kit offering it.

(trust me, I actually researched this foolishness)

So this is one we can't actiually blame bitcoin for.

I believe Bitcoin is relatively well suited to ransomware.

e: oops helps to finish the idea. The whole blockchain poo poo makes it relatively easy to confirm such a thing and it also helps support the cash price of bitcoin! I wonder how many customers of those exchanges have bought bitcoin solely and entirely to pay ransoms.

Bitcoin is useful to anyone who needs to transfer value outside of traditional finance without necessarily revealing the identity of the sender or receiver. It's extremely ill-suited to any other purpose.

I stand by my assumption that when the bubble actually bursts its not going to follow that graph at all. It'll be a total free fall over one day with no warning. That graph could be applied a few times to this thing and the speculation just keeps bringing it back up. Maybe a country will decide it's undermining it's own currency and declare it treasonous. That should do it.
