I'll never understand why there isn't an option to give any tile with a unit on it a bright border in its civ's color, Civ 1 style, so you can easily see at a glance where the units are.

Not everyone would use it and I wouldn't use it all of the time, but it would be SO NICE to have when I need it.

Just pretend Civ is some alternate reality where they settle down during the Neolithic.

But yeah, I'd love to see some extinct pre-Columbian civs like Mississippians, Nazca and Kuhikugu (there's so few Civs in South America in comparison to elsewhere).

Do people actually watch the animations? I turned them off a long, long time ago just so I can get to the "click to tell Phillip to go kiss an inquisitor" button faster. A decision I immediately felt validated for the moment Alexander's HORRIBLE face came into play.

There are some leaders I hate the art for, some I don't, and some leaders I just hate. Both V and VI's Alexander fall into that last category.

They really made Alexander punchable in this game. I think they know how people feel about him and decided to just make him exactly the kind of dick everyone thinks he is. They bundled him with Cyrus, who for some reason they gave the defining personality trait of "will probably betray you and is open about it" and he's still the more hateable of the two.

Personally I'm not against cartoonier depictions, but it does feel like VI has a sliding scale from Gilgamesh/Pedro/Gandhi to Tomyris/Cyrus, where on the former end you can wind up looking like an action figure or Droopy Dog, and on the other end you still look cartoonish in a way but not as over-the-top. There aren't any I dislike except for Alexander, who looks like they went for "high school quarterback that bullies Melvin," and Gandhi, who just looks like a smug prick and I hate him has his qualities.

The series jumps around on this matter a lot, and while I'm largely fine with whatever they go with, I definitely prefer the Civ V Alexander to either the current one or Civ Rev's Alexander, who is "the surfer that bullies Melvin."

Agreed there. They vary quite a lot. I kinda like the leaders that are more on the "serious" side. I mean, they are still cartoony but Tomyris, Cyrus, Hojo, Frederick and a few others all look pretty good to me. Gandhi, the Chinese leader, (name escapes me atm), Philip II etc all look terrible I think. Just obnoxious and not very visually pleasing to look at.

I don't like the way the Civ IV leaders look at all but in that game they don't spend so much time right up in your face as the leaders in VI do. There is no way for me to appreciate the animations in VI (well done though some of them are) due to the way Firaxis decided to use them. I just wish I could turn all the noise *off*. I don't need a big screen with an animation popping up just because someone doesn't like me or denounces me or whatever, just put it in the alerts. If the game shoves a screen in my face, then at least let it be a screen that I can interact with.

Or... better yet, do it like IV does it where I can still check other screens and poo poo while the leader screen is open. That way I can actually try and play the Diplomacy game.

I like VI quite a lot but it's amazing how a lot of the usability devolved over time (starting with V).

Civ V question. As Korea, would it be worth it to delay founding your city by a turn, possibly foregoing things like getting a good pantheon and basically just starting later than everyone else, in order to settle next to a mountain? Your science is already ridiculous as Korea, but getting an observatory in your capital seems like it'd be hilarious in the long term.

Oh yeah, stuff like that is totally worth it. In every civ game (at least IV on) it's very worth it to settle on the second turn if you see a sweet, sweet spot like that. Just gotta take a few less risks for a bit.

If you can get your settler to the tile in two or three turns, yeah. The only time it's ever really worth it to go aimlessly with your settler is if you're playing as Spain, though.

Alright then. Thanks. I was just worried since things like the stupid way V makes pantheon costs scale made me wonder if delaying your city founding would screw you out of stuff due to the delay on founding your capital, but a one turn delay for such a massive benefit long-term also seemed really tempting otherwise. Probably guarantees the loss of any early wonders, but rushing early wonders is silly anyway.

Yeah, it makes early wonders from chancy (if you're on any sort of difficulty...which it sounds like you are) to too risky to bother, and it makes getting an early pantheon rather chancy as well. However, once you get that crazy science bonus going as Korea with an additional 50% from an observatory in your capital it won't matter that you never got that religion of your own up and running.

As fun as that sounds, I basically play Civ MP only unless I want to test something. It's more enjoyable to me that way, and the pace of GMR/PYDT games forces me to take things slower, which lets me put a lot more thought into each turn and do a lot of planning and whatnot, whereas when I play live I start to move through turns fast and get sloppy.

Anyway, follow-up Korea question, if my capital has a lot of jungle around it, it's worth trying to preserve as much as I can even though I already have ridiculous science, in order to make it even more ridiculous, right? It might make the early game a bit rougher, but once I get a university things should get exciting.

Also, if I'm not doing a culture victory but still have the space, do I want to use GWAMs for their Great Works, or burn them for the immediate benefits? Later on the latter definitely seems the way to go, but early the accumulated culture might end up amounting to more than what I'd get from the immediate benefits. At least for Writers; using Artists to lengthen a Golden Age that's in progress or something seems more tempting than the paintings, and the Great Musicians, well.

It's one of the standalone DLC civs, yeah. They're ridiculously good, getting +2 Science from specialists and Great Person tile improvements, plus some other things that are nice but that science boost is the big one. Early game Babylon will be better than them in science, but once they start making guilds and whatnot they get ridiculous.

Edit: But yeah, this is my start in this MP game. Is this good? This feels very, very good. Particularly if I'm lucky and those ruins have Faith so I can snag Sun God or Sacred Path ASAP.

Don't jungles give science eventually in V? If so, you've got yourself a good Korea start. Just don't improve your bananas and lose jungle.

Edit: Also, I miss being able to actually see hills. They are invisible in VI.

They do, yeah, with a University. Also you can put trading posts on them without removing them, so they give Gold as well. (And Culture if I snag Sacred Path, and more Science once you get a few policies into Rationalism.)

I think I will improve the bananas, though; I thought about that a lot, and it'll remove the jungles, sure, but it'll also increase the Food production by +2 each, which will not only massively speed my growth, but can support a specialist per plantation. My specialists give me +2 Science on top of whatever else they do, while University-boosted jungle tiles give... +2 Science. So, I don't really lose anything by improving them, I just grow faster and then can immediately support the specialists the University will let me use.

I will lose the Culture I'd get from them if I get Sacred Path, but I don't mind that too much. I'll still have plenty from other sources, and I value the extra growth more I think. Though I can be talked out of this line of action if other people who know better thing I'm wrong; I'll have plenty of time, this game's not moving fast, and the turn might be reverted a few players because someone managed to bloat the save file already.

Jungle tiles are kinda late and don't provide any production though so I usually don't go out of my way to keep them around unless it's a bad tile like a non-river hill. But I'm not really a great player.

I tried to play Civ6 again and barely a couple of turns in a city state settler ran up to my capital. While I appreciate the free settler that early it's kinda bad that it happened.

Oh yeah, I found a city-state settler in an MP game I'm in. They were between two other city-states that were fairly close, so I think they couldn't settle. I haven't taken them yet (in part because I haven't caught them), but it's tempting. Though at the same time I feel bad because this big of an advantage in an MP game, due to crappy map placement, feels unfair. Also, it's Stockholm, a really good city-state to be suzerain of.

They'd end up with a better game that sold worse. People like to think they value gameplay over graphics but it just isn't the case.

Same reason they leave in features the AI has no idea how to use - most players never notice the capabilities of the AI - some even buy a game based on the feature list but never play it.
