The threshold for that kind of response in Japanese society is lower than in the US though I think. Situations like "I wasn't sure if he was going to come to the party or not but he did" get what I consider an extreme response.

Wolfenstein The New Colossus is good. The combat is not best-in-class and the level design is eh but it has its moments and the dual shotguns and laser rifle feel great. The setpieces make up for a lot of its shortcomings.

Also the voice acting is superb

rewatch so of those moments and set pieces. after the up front shock value is mainly just unlikable characters giving you the elevator pitch version of their philosophy while bj grumbles about how he has to poop in a bag and wants to die

The weird thing about the new Wolfenstien to me is all of the critical ravings and GOTY nominations. I really thought it was one of the more mediocre games I played this year. It wasn't all bad, but it was noticably worse than the first one and imo had big gameplay and pacing issues. And I don't think it's just me because most people here seem to agree. I really think the dumb controversy worked in it's favor and reviewers felt like they had something to prove, because it's not nearly as good as it's being made out to be.

I imagine they're probably all like the Giant Bomb guys who pretty much unanimously agree that the gameplay is dogshit but the story is incredible.

I loved the argument with the socialist character. That was pretty much it.

Not really sure why he was even part of the game either. Almost all the side characters had no purpose or reason for being included.

The problem with Wolfenstein 2's story is the God Key never gets resolved at all, and you don't get to kill Hitler. You can't tease Hitler like that and not let the player murder them gleefully.

Beat hidden agenda. It plays like rear end via phone app and theres no reason you cant use a ds4 except its part of the dumb second screen initiative

Its like a bad mixup of law and order and 90's serial killer movies and there are instant game over qte's in the final chapter with no way to retry without replaying the whole 2 hours.

The story was completely toothless compared to the marketing. No surprise, but a wasted opportunity.

Thanks for all the Monster Hunter input but yeah really didn't grab me. Seemed to shallow. Before you dogpile me I've never played MH so idk the routine. I'd like to check the full game out at least for a bit, though I suppose it's not going to change much. Weird but good timing with the beta there that I was able to try it out

I don't think they even set out to market it that way. We just live in an unprecedentedly stupid time, where being mean to Nazis in a video game is controversial and they ran with it (I don't blame them at all I would have too) but it defiantly seemed like reviewers ignored how bad the level design was because they were treating it like a civic duty to give it good reviews. I actually thought the story was mostly good cheesy fun, but it was an awful feeling game to play.

Personally I think the Wolfenstien reboot is pretty meh, and Doom did everything 10x better except it's way too drat repetitive and wolf has more variety.

Oh sure, no doubt - for all the "oh you're surprised they're marketing you get to kill Nazis in a Wolfenstein game :smug:" bollocks, it was obvious that stuff was playing on the controversy for easy coverage. Of course you got labelled as alt right if you pointed that out. :v:

I really loved the first game, but the second was tepid in design and tried too hard to make Big Statement while also being too coy and sheepish about following through on anything. New Order was great in that it was reminding us Nazis were loving vile and not just a generic bad guy, but the second seems to fall back too much on that latter bit. As I said it feels like a missed opportunity to me.

Guess I'm a just bit annoyed because Far Cry 5 has a lot of complaints about it not making any statement about the current state of right wingers, but those same people fell over the story telling here. Ah well.

How's Wolfenstein 2 with a controller? I played TNO and TOB on PC and they felt great. Wolf 2 is dropping on price (retail) really fast in here, a few months more and it'll be 20€ for a new copy.

Dragon's Crown wasn't as much in need of fixing as Odin Sphere so probably not much, other than 4K support unless they do something about the game being the same 7 stages over and over again, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Huh. They're putting out an updated version so I had to assume there was something that could've used improvement to it besides just moving it up to PS4.

That's what used to happen back in Shadow Over Mystara at least. So whoever among your friends picked a wizard was basically an rear end in a top hat.
