The biggest problem Star Wars has is darth Vader is dead. 1 thru 6 are about darth Vader. There's an arc of innocence to cruelty to redemption beyond which, what the hell even is Star Wars? That said the Disney films are as good as I could imagine them being.

I thought that really tied into the moment when the remainder of the Resistance calls for help from the mining planet--and no one responded. "The Sith and the Jedi are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power." ...and Kylo and Rey are alike in that using the force is a passionate affair for both of them.

The individually packaged Special Edition DVDs from 2006 and the 2008 box set of them include the 1993 Laserdisc edits along with the 2004 DVD versions. They’re not as clean as the 2004 “main” versions with all the disliked changes but they’re generally considered to be the most accessible version of the theatrical cuts out there.

I remember being in a Hollywood video with my dad when the unaltered OT VHS was out for Christmas, it said all over the packaging it was the last time you'd be able to buy the original movies. I tried to talk my dad into buying it but he took it as a marketing ploy, which, fair, it sounded like BS. THANKS A LOT DAD

Like, yes, it would be a very good thing to have Blu Rays/UHD/ever onward scans of the original versions of the OT just for historical reference. It would be nice if that happened. But the idea of the film as fixed object that has to be maintained in a very specific state AND in the best possible shape is not really something that existed in 1977. FFS it's a miracle we have a full version of Lawrence of Arabia.

The politics of the movie are bizarre, I agree. The Force Awakens showed us an unprovoked attack on the Republic that apparently succeeded in first-striking their fleet, and in The Last Jedi nobody apart from our heroes seems bothered by that at all. There's even a little speech about how Both Sides Are Bad. The message I took away was that cartoon fascism is impossible strong and good people don't give a poo poo, also it's important to shut up and listen to liberal leaders who have A Plan that turns out to be terrible. Better hope a hero from the 70s has been hanging out doing nothing for a decade because he's the only way out of this mess. It's garbled.

So tonight I was thinking to myself: why do the First Order’s Walkers have those huge front legs that look like they broke an ankle or are trying to imitate a gorilla using his hands as legs? What’s going on there and why did they make them look so weird. I’m sure it’s answered in an art book or a visual encyclopedia, but I realized that’s probably the fix to keep idiot flyboys from trying the legs up with tow cable. I mean, I sure hope so, because according to every Star Wars video game that dumbass circle-the-walker poo poo that was infuriating with early 3D cameras was the only way to beat those things. Seeing AT-ATs fought without tow cables was a highlight of Rogue One for me.
