Warning: Spoilers after the OP. Most of page 1 and 2 have spoiler tags but the show has aired in Canada and is up on Netflix now. You've been warned. Hello fellow Travelers, the director has sent me from the future to assign you your next mission. Your mission is to watch Travelers S1 on Netflix. Season 2 just finished airing in Canada and will be on Netflix the day after the Christmas. This is a protocol Alpha mission. First item, I'm not going to spoil anything in the OP. To do so would be a disservice to you and you'd hate me after you finish it. You may have already picked up on the fact that this is a show about time travel and let me tell you as an expert on time travel shenanigans, this show loving delivers. Sent from the distant future, we're not told exactly how far but it's at least several centuries, humanity has been all but wiped out, living under overpacked sheltered domes on the verge of extinction. We actually see very little of the future but Travelers makes it quite clear that the future royally loving sucks. Travelers are the conscious minds of humans from far into the future, sent back in time moments before the death of a host candidate. The existing consciousness is overwritten moments before the host's historical time of death using a T.E.L.L. Time, Elevation, Latitude, and Longitude. When timed right the incoming Traveler is able to avoid the circumstances of the hosts original death. Host candidates are researched and selected by the current age of near total information awareness, social media, public records. I bet you never thought your facebook profile would get used like that. Using this information, Travelers have been sent back in time by an entity known as The Director in order to make both minor and major changes to the timeline in order to save the future. I'm not going to tell you who The Director is, or what actor plays The Director. You'll find out eventually. The Director sends back the human consciousness and provides orders via "darkweb back channels" and messengers. The role of technology on this show is goofy as hell but whatever. Messengers on the other hand are loving creepy. While The Director cannot temporarily control the consciousness of an adult without killing that person, a child can be temporarily controlled with no damage to provide Travelers with missions and directions. Messengers might be creepy, but the process of one consciousness overwriting another is a pretty disturbing thing to watch. About midway thru season one there's a scene where multiple people get overwritten in rapid succession that is all kinds of hosed up. While there are thousands of Travelers operating all over the world, this series follows a team of 5 from their original arrival in the 21st. Agent Grant McClaren aka Traveler 3468 Team lead, his host life is an FBI agent Marcy Wharton aka Traveler 3569 Team medic and certified kicker of rear end. Her transition to the 21st isn't a smooth one. Carly Shannon aka Traveler 3465 Tactician, soldier, muscle. Her host life is that of a mother of a toddler with an abusive husband Phillip Pearson aka Traveler 3326 Historian. Modified and raised from birth to allow him the capability of memorizing all of history with perfect recall. In things to struggle with, Phillip easily has life the hardest Trevor Holden aka Traveler 0115 Engineer, and a very, very old human in the body of a 17 year old high school student. Pay attention for one off lines that give away just how old Trevor is. David Mailer aka Not a Traveler. The Director The head honco, the big cheese. El jefe. You get no more information than that, other than all travelers share a near fanatical devotion to The Director. Recurring cast: Ray Green Public defender and purveyor of shady poo poo Kat MacClaren Wife of Agent Grant MacClaren Rick Hall Never actually provided his Traveler number, but the leader of a team that is down to its last two members Grace Day Guidance counselor at Trevor's high school. Turns out to be one of the best characters on the show. New for Season 2 Vincent Ingram Without giving anything away, the technical term is an absolute fucker Dr. Perrow Psychologist hired by Ingram to help with his various phobias. Traveler protocols: Protocol 1: The mission comes first Protocol 2: Never jeopardize your cover Protocol 3: Don't take a life, don't save a life unless otherwise directed Protocol 4: Do not reproduce Protocol 5: In the absence of direction, maintain your hosts life Protocol 6: No intercommunication with other Travelers unless otherwise directed Protocol Alpha: Hasn't actually been spoken out loud but seems to mean "gently caress the other protocols get the job done" Small things to look out for: Travelers ongoing amazement at regular food Small lines that give away huge character and world details Pay attention to some background characters, they may become more important later. Traveler 0420, Welcome to the 21st. HUGE SPACEKABLOOIE fucked around with this message at 01:27 on Dec 30, 2017 |

Ok now my big black box of sperg since I just finished season 2 It took me two passes on the finale to figure out how it actually ended. Traveller 001 isn't dead. After 004 completed the machine, 001 transferred his consciousness into 004. 004 is shown laying in the machine talking to 001 who isn't actually there. Next we're shown a lifeless body as Trevor describes his first transfer. He's wheeled in front of a webcam and The Director immediately overwrites him. What they didn't show, was that 001, now in the body of 004 transfers himself into Dr. Perrow. Right at the end of the episode she tells the driver she wants to see her son. Perrow never mentions having a son, only a daughter. Perrow pickups up Ingram's kid. I'm hoping this is setting up Amanda Tapping to be the big bad of season 3. I'm also intrigued by the respect and deference the Travelers show to the programmers and engineers. 004 is suggested to be part of the upper echelon and he confirms that he's a specialist. The 3 programmers sent back for Graces trial are also shown a ton of respect which has to make for a really unusual social hierarchy in the future. Also in the episode with Grace's trial, I'd been spending the whole show trying not to anthropomorphize The Director, then in the scene where Grace is to be sentenced, The Director expresses both regret and sorrow. Not qualities I'd attribute to an AI. I think it also lends something to the argument that The Director is more than just the machine as 001 would have everyone believe. One thing that did kind of bug me was the groundhog day episode. Initially in the episode where Trevor tries to save Grace from her death he specifically says there are no do-overs, that you can only go back as far as the most recent Traveller. On the face of it, the groundhog day episode would seem to contradict this. So in my head that episode doesn't end up breaking the rules and goes something like this: While you may not be able to go back any further than the most recent Traveller, presumably The Director instantly sees the events that play out as the future changes. When the first attempt fails, 5002 is sent back a second after 5001 was, overwriting 5001 with the latest historical record. Lather, rinse, repeat until 5009 when they finally succeed. Finally, the update episode. I'd been wondering about this since the show started. A newly arrived historian is aces, but you'd have to think that with history changing his knowledge would pretty quickly be rendered obsolete. So his episode where he got that update was both cool and a little horrifying. I'm not sure how someone could survive with that amount of knowledge at their fingertips. You'd go insane. Ok thats all I got for the moment. Watch Travelers. HUGE SPACEKABLOOIE fucked around with this message at 06:25 on Dec 21, 2017 |

Thanks for doing this! I still have two more episodes of season 2 to watch. Travelers is one of those shows that deftly handles being lower budget in a way that really works for me. I'm not quite sure how to word it, it's not that they're doing the best with what they've got, it's doing a great job despite what they've got!

Great show, I guessed the intro for season 2 based on the CRT monitor and old computer I couldn't believe the show was doing that, ballsy yet totally awesome. Canadian scifi is good scifi.

The promo image (or is it taken from the intro?) is hilarious since none of the lower bodies match with the upper so it looks like everybody is jauntily displaying their rear end like a runway model

I've been watching this, as well as starting Continuum. Seeing Grace from Travelers in Continuum as a cop is weird. Seeing Six from Dark Matter as Travis in Continuum is also weird. People probably have the opposite experience due to the order in which I am watching things. Either way, good shows. I enjoy them. I'm one episode behind on Travelers and on episode 3 of season 2 of Continuum.

This is a neat clue about the nature of Marcy's character this season. This show definitely scratches the Continuum itch for me. I love smart time travel shows and this is very smart. And they got Keith Mars on the cast this year, how can you go wrong with that?

Really the only thing I dislike about this show is that it isn't time-travely enough for me. We don't get to see (I'm only halfway through S2) any real future or past timelines the way we do in shows like 12 Monkeys and Continuum. With Travelers it has so far just been "we're from the future here are some nanotech devices and vague descriptions of our future world". It could just as easily be some dudes astral projecting themselves into host bodies to solve crimes etc. Give me some episodes with Carly beating the poo poo out of some 23rd century assholes in their own timeline and I'd be ecstatic. That being said, the thing I really DO like is that I find it hard to choose a favorite character. All of them have pretty compelling host lives though I think Marcy and Trevor are my favorites.... Marcy because she's just a smart badass and Trevor because he's old as gently caress and funny. It's a really good show but I just wish I could see more future/past fuckery. isaboo fucked around with this message at 09:17 on Dec 26, 2017 |

Norwegian Rudo posted:Is this the only Canadian sci-fi show of the past 20 years that hasn't had either Roger Cross or Ryan Robbins appear? Defiance! Which I think is unique, in that it's a show that rarely if ever cast Canadian scifi actors, while also being the place where a lot of the newer faces of Canadian scifi first got their foot in the door, genre-wise -- e.g. Amy Forsyth (Channel Zero), Mayko Nguyen (Killjoys), Trenna Keating (lots of bit parts), Dewshane Williams (everything from Supergirl to The Strain to The Expanse), Anna Hopkins (upcoming role on the Expanse, Arrow). I think I can count the number of typical genre actors who appeared on the show with one hand, even ignoring the Canada part. Basically what I'm saying is that it was a gateway drug, but for scifi actors.
