It has nothing to do with Trump's authoritarian instincts, or his cult of personality, or how he validates the previously fringe voices, it's just that he's a big old meany.

He's a republican. Nothing trump is doing is anything different than what Pence would have done, except he's louder on twitter. The nazis marching in the streets would have happened if Jeb! had gotten elected, they were there for the statues. The cult of personality is irrelevant when the cult is the party as evidenced by Roy Moore almost winning. Pence is a loving christian dominionist, if that's not authoritarian enough for you I don't know what to tell you.

Every complaint you're making literally is "Trump's too gaudy about it". All of them need to be cleared out. If Trump had been rightfully impeached on his first day in office nothing in 2017 would have changed one drat bit; if anything the House and Senate would have been able to shove their bullshit through faster.

Impeaching Trump a month in when it became obvious he was absolutely unqualified probably would have been the safer bet for the Republicans since it would have given them enough time for their crazies to realize they are still Republicans, they would have gotten a lot of bipartisan cred from both the media and Democratic politicians (resulting in less obstinance for their policies), and there would be a hell of a lot less heat on them from the media since the same evil stuff they would be doing wouldn't be coming with a bunch of dumbfuck tweets announcing the secret plan every time. He also wouldn't be dragging down their other races with his stink. The GOP was way too cowardly to take the chance their most fanatical supporters wouldn't punish them for it (or maybe their feared him taking them down with him if more are complicit in his treason than we think) so here we are.

So what is the opposite of "So dumb and god drat crazy"? Like, one side is LITERALLY BEING DUMB AND CRAZY and here they are represented as cool and calm and collected. Because I gotta tell ya, they are RIGHT ON that talking point: if you bring up anything on how bad this taxscam is the inevitable response is to scream at you and demand answers.
"This tax reform is making cuts to vital programs-"
"SO WHAT'RE YOU DOING WITH YOUR EXTRA MONEY???"

Look, I did the math, this "tax break" shakes out to about 32 cents a day for me, for a few years. Before rising. Higher than now. So, I guess, "saving for the inevitable tax rise"? "Saving up and buying a gumball from a machine every two days?" It is purely selfish people, wondering out loud to your face, why you aren't purely selfish too. That's all it is! "Look you got yours now shut up" should not be a loving economic policy!

It was a shame how he carried on

Even as someone who isn't all THAT young (27) I still find this poo poo incredibly annoying at the holiday gatherings. You'll run into this exact scenario every time: people sitting around between food, opening presents, or whatever else, and just relaxing and either texting someone or checking social media. Some smug old gently caress feels the absolute NEED to chime in "what did you all do before cell phones? *forced and unnecessarily long laughter*"

I find the best answers to either be "I was like 6 years old" or if I'm feeling real feisty, go on a quick rant about how every loving generation before us would have done the same poo poo with the same technology present. Plus it's a mostly social act that's being criticized as being anti-social which really just boggles me. Sorry people like checking in on/talking to their friends quickly and easily.

I feel bad for my step sister in particular. She's like 15, so she's super volatile anyway, and the whole family gives her poo poo for always being on her phone. To the point of bullying basically. She's also the only "liberal" in her household (and one of the few in her school from what I gather), and gay. So I see her frequently get in arguments with our uncle about why he shouldn't make blatantly racist comments or jokes and then watching everyone dogpile on her and telling her to "relax, it's just a joke, PC police, etc." Pretty standard Midwest poo poo.

I feel so sorry for her the next few years, hope she can just get out right after high school :ohdear:

What happened to the “Trump is a buffoon who lets GOP bad stuff happen because he doesn’t understand or care, Pence is actively malicious and would be lot more efficient at making GOP stuff happen on purpose” hot take?

Also, moving discourse counts as well. 20 years ago, calling for a ban on religious headwear would have been laughably racist in Denmark, but thanks to the Danish People’s Party it’s a mainstream discussion today. Our social democrats have basically turned into giant racists to maintain their influence as a consequence too.

Pence might be more dangerous than Trump because he would do largely the same poo poo but the media is desperate for a Republican to not be a burning tire fire and would immediately polish his image and largely ignore the effects of his policies as long as he kept his public statements to how much he loves his family. He's also the real deal culture warrior and would be a lot more personally invested in making sure his evil plans work than stupidly grandstanding and self sabotage. When Mike Pence was asked about his experience at Hamilton, he told a story about what he told his son that night. He explained to his son that when they walked in some people cheered, some people booed, and that those performers respectfully asked to share their concerns. He claimed he said (and I quote) "that is what democracy sounds like." It doesn't matter if that story happened, because he's Vice President, and part of living in a free and tolerant society is that you tolerate decent. If the actual story is that it kept Mike Pence up all night as he ranted and raved to his wife about how rude they were, that wouldn't matter because he obviously knows better than to share those beliefs with the public. It would almost make it more admirable, it proves that Mike Pence actually believes in allowing decent and not using his position of power to punch down at those with less power.

Trump on the other hand said that the cast "should not be allowed" to do what they did.

This isn't tone, it's content. Pence said protest "is what democracy sounds like" and Trump said they shouldn't be allowed to protest. One is the view of a conventional republican and one is the view of a strongman wannabe dictator. Again, not tone, content.

Trump is the blueprint of how you turn a democracy into a dictatorship. If this were happening in Panama, we would rightly call it democratic backsliding, yet it seems that too many Americans don't see that as a possibility when it's happening in America. Pence is not a threat to democracy, the fever dreams of him ignoring elections have about as much grounding as those rumors that Bush 43 wouldn't actually step down. He is the lesser evil, there's not a single way in which he's not. White nationalists never chanted Romney's name, McCain never refused to answer if he would accept defeat, Trump didn't happen in a vacuum but he is in almost every way a worse incarnation of Republican existence than anyone else especially a milquetoast generic like Mike Pence.

I do think that Trump's complete lack of impulse control is more dangerous to the survival of humanity than Pence's more quiet evil. Also, impeachment is absolutely not a free action. If President Pence is a serious possibility, the Republicans aren't in good shape.

Overall, there aren't any good options when it comes to picking which Republican occupies the Oval Office.

Note that the only reason that there's any division here is because the Republicans flipped from "we support Mueller and think that he's an honorable man who will do a good job (because he's a Republican like us)" to "Mueller is literally Satan (because he's doing an actual investigation despite being a Republican like us)". It's neither Mueller's nor the Democrats' fault that there's so much fighting over this, the GOP just thought that because Mueller was in their party, he'd ignore any wrongdoing he found, if he bothered to look at all.
