There Bias Two posted:Yeah but the food pyramid is not based on accurate science either, therefore screwing up the model. You're right, but the point is that an accurate model would likely lead to worse outcomes here. If we took the pyramid out of the equation, we'd lose a lot of the effects of lobbying from industry. Industry wants people to buy higher-priced foods they don't actually, technically need to survive or even have a nutritionally balanced meal (things like red meat). So, the effect of keeping the food pyramid as an input is that the food basket prices are higher, leading to a bit more money for SNAP. SNAP doesn't have any requirements that say "you must eat X grams of red meat/milk/whatever per day;" it's just cashlike assistance for food. The end result is more money for people who really, really need it - and some amount of counterbalance against higher-than-average prices. I'm not saying that it's a good or even sensible system. But, in this case, it has a positive effect, just because it increases the total number of dollars that people can get from SNAP.

Plus there's this weird cultural sensitivity about liver and onions, as if it's something everyone's grandfather liked to have and forced on everyone else. It sucks because it means less restaurants and stores carry it and various other organ meats. It's awesome because some of the tastiest cuts of meat out there remain inexpensive. I challenge anyone that likes good food (Soylent guy this does not include you) but not organ meat to go to a Japanese head-to-tail restaurant. Prepare to be amazed.

Thin strips of grilled anything covered in sauces are like easy mode for eating tho...

Seph posted:Why is it being promoted as a food assistance program if we're going to allow people to spend the money however they please? I'm having trouble understanding the logic in making a program worse in order to appease people who oppose it for irrational reasons. Do you really think people who are irrationally opposed to SNAP will come around and start liking it if you make a good faith effort to address their concerns, or do you think they will just seize on the next anecdote of poors abusing in order to justify their opposition.

LoL @ people who have never been on food assistance. Listen, You can find a way to make a small amount of money off of your SNAP income one way or another. Not enough to call it a profit, really, and probably not enough to make any bold purchases either. You could probably save up for a month to buy a new videogame. Not to mention the social shame of selling loving food (do you know anybody in your network who would buy steaks from you instead of, say, the grocery store?), which you're also probably selling at a loss. Let me ask you a better question: What do you think incentives a person to go through all that work? It isn't being lazy, I'll tell you that much. You can turn anything into money. You can outlaw the cashout option in every state if you wanted to (you shouldn't, there are a ton of good reasons to let people get cash, not the least of which there are places that don't accept EBT). You could hire aggressive case workers who audit purchases (you shouldn't, it would likely cost far more than the SNAP program itself). Or you could just accept that there is no way to police how people spend money once you give it to them and understand that people are making informed choices - they would rather, for instance in this case - sacrifice their health to feel a little happier. Depression is a real thing in impoverished households. It can be amazingly bleak even when everyone is nutritionally secure, making ends meet, and staring at the loving wall because they are bored to death, waiting to go to sleep so they can do it all again tomorrow.

On the subject of SNAP, as a Canadian, there's a different program that does formula and diapers and wipes for babies right? Because gently caress that stuff adds up quick. Do any assistance programs cover tampons/pads/cups? and ugh at the very concept of red pilling your daughter's boyfriend. Let's try and make our kid's significant other a worse person for them!
