IPCRESS posted:Fill your copper pipes with finely ground salt ($0.90/kg at Woolworths) when you're shaping them (unless you have a proper mandrel, then use that). They'll still kink if you're determined, so keep that in mind. Really don't use soldered or sweated joints. Why no solder or sweating? Contamination?

Groda posted:Why no solder or sweating? Contamination? I don't do anything with stills, but I do work with a lot of copper since I do HVAC work. The only thing I can think of is that oxidation stuff will form on the pipes when you heat them up, and that can flake off and get into other parts. Of course this is easily mitigated by running nitrogen or something through the lines while you braze. Or its just one of those "More fittings = more leaks" line of thinking. Which isn't really true. Also, if you're gonna bend copper, get soft copper, not the hard lines both those pictures were using.

Lead solder in a still will cause the lead to leach into your booze and poison you. Lead free tin-silver solder (or brazing compound) however is perfectly safe for brewing equipment. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/silver-soldering-diy-brewing-vessel-upgrades.html Alternatively instead of using a torch, you could GTAW weld all the joints. Never welded copper myself, sounds like a challenge though. Google says you need to buy special deoxidized copper if you're going to weld it.

They did this on mythbusters. If your hand is slightly damp the extreme high heat flash boils the water and forms a protective vapour barrier around you hand. They did it with molten lead

At the very least, the shattering pottery would absorb some of the energy and leave less to break the skull. That being said, depending on how fragile it is you might end up shattering both.

Probably would work like bicycle helmets, designed to shatter and take the kinetic force away with the flying shards. I prefer the impact absorption style of protection, myself.
