I just had a look at lancer artoria (just to see if she's a better option when she's available) and she seems very underwhelming. She only has slightly more attack than lancer alter, a worse mana burst and it looks like her NP will usually do less damage than lancer alters since alters ignores defence and curses the enemy. From what I can see her only benefit is her NP pierces invunerability but the fact that it's aoe diminishes its usefullness somewhat. Am I missing something or is this another case where the alter version is a cheaper and more effective option?

From what I've heard they're different characters who fulfill different roles. Lancer Artoria is built to throw out her NP a lot, while Alter is built to crit the poo poo out of things with the right support while also having some utility to her strong NP when she throws it out.

Lancer Artoria is a premier Buster crit servant. Protection of World's End is a crazy skill that bundles everything needed for burst crit damage into one skill (generate stars, gather stars, boost crit damage). So you get a bunch of stars, wait until she has two Buster cards (or even ideally a Buster chain with her NP), and then unleash hell with that skill and Mana Burst. E: Oh I should read closer (Lancer Artoria Alter is such a mouthful that I usually just parse Lancer Artoria as the Alter version). Yes the 5* non-Alter version seems like a worse version. I like Liz's character, and her third ascension costume is cute. I have no need for an AOE Lancer after getting Lancer Artoria but I would not be upset if I maxed her out someday. Someday...

I gave Liz a 2030 for full support and she's great. I'm very tempted to level up Proto Cu mainly for chimera eradication and other pesky beasts.

Liz did nothing wrong except not appear in any of my summons, so Kiyohime can keep calling her a big dum-dum until she does. Apparently my previous complaining about having almost no Sabers paid off, as a random story ticket pull got me Saber Alter. First time a ticket pull has gotten me anything good.

You may not need an AoE attack but I bet your Lancer Artoria would appreciate a 40% attack buff, and a 20% defense reduction, to stack multiplicatively with her own Buster and critical buffs, from a friend who can also contribute against the same classes she can.

I don’t believe so as such, but they are a little different in terms of how the game handles them, because the game calculates all buffs of the same type additively, but different types multiplicatively (as far as I understand). So two 20%buster buffs on the same character is 40% more damage, but a 20% buster buff and a 20% attack buff is 44% more, and so on. Technically buster cards have a small star gen modifier, but I don’t know if the buster performance effect increases that.

I did 20-30 Caster 40APs and didn't see a single demon. I got like 30 Caster Gold Gems which makes me feel like an idiot for not farming Rider Gems yesterday to get Drake's skills even higher.
