And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss goes 8-8

therattle posted:

I've been bingeing on screeners so have caught up a bit on some of my sadly-neglected film watching. Here are some thoughts on what I've seen recently:

Top-tier/muy, muy excellente (in no order)
The Shape of Water - beautiful story, magnificent execution, wonderful acting. I wish I'd seen it on a big screen. So lush and gorgeous.
Phantom Thread - a PTA masterpiece with DDL giving his all, as usual, and being matched by his opposite lead and supporting cast.
Call Me By Your Name - exquisite coming of age story which brought something new to the genre in a way that Lady Bird didn't

Second-tier (excellente)
Lady Bird - I really enjoyed it, I thought it was very well done, and I appreciated the manifest sincerity (I do like sincere films). It was very impressive as a debut, BUT...I don't quite get what all the fuss is about. I have seen this film before, or versions of it - this just happens to be a particularly good one.
Lady Macbeth - another excellent and very assured debut. The director and DP have the confidence to hold the frame still for long periods, the acting is excellent, and the story utterly gripping and horrifying.
God's Own Country - yet another outstanding debut; both this and Lady Macbeth made me think of Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights, in that both managed to achieve what she did not but I think was trying to - Lady Macbeth in making a more realistic and modern period film, and God's Own Country in a tempestuous romance set against the harsh north England rural landscape.
The Mercy - I wasn't expecting much but James Marsh's film of failed round-the-world sailor Donald Crowhurst is an outstanding portrayal of a man pushed over the edge - an excellent psychological drama.
Journey's End - based on the 1928 play, another excellent psychological drama about the stresses of life at the front for soldiers in WW1. Very good performances all round from a very good cast, led by Sam Claflin.
Jane - documentary about Jane Goodall. Outstanding.
I Am Not Your Negro - another excellent doc about James Baldwin. Like Jane, it has rich material to draw on; the documentarian's job is more of structuring, sifting and editing than creating from whole cloth, but in both cases the job is exceedingly well done.
The Party - highly enjoyable and delightfully short comedy-drama with a stacked cast. Felt a bit stagy though.
Three Billboards - has some amazing moments but also some which I thought were a bit weak, like the deer. The political points are pretty heavy-handedly made. Frances McD is wonderful though, likewise Woody Harrelson.
How could I forget The Handmaiden? Terrific story, amazing production design, excellent film.
Paddington 2 - I loved it on the initial watch, and will no doubt watch repeatedly with my son. Yet to be seen if it is up to the masterpiece level of the first but it may well be.

Third tier (bueno)
Molly's Game - see recent comments
A Quiet Passion - I was enjoying this before my wife took against it and stopped it half-way through.
Daphne: a good debut with a very good central performance but ultimately I just didn't care that much about her.

Fourth Tier (so-so)
Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool - good performances but clumsy and unsatisfying story-telling, unconvincing wigs, cheap painted backdrops in US-set shots, and harsh, unnatural lighting. This bad lighting made me realise how good most lighting usually is.

Fifth Tier (what was I thinking?)
The Mountain Between Us. Not quite as bad as the prequels.
Loving Vincent - lacklustre and contrived story, intrusive accents, and the constant motion made me uncomfortable. Turned off after less than 30 minutes. It made me appreciate the stillness of Lady Macbeth even more.

I'm sure I have forgotten one or two because there have been a lot, but there it is.

How’s the Philip Glass score on Jane?

As far as I can recall, good. Not grating or intrusive. There have been a lot of good scores; I'd find myself thinking that the music in a film was really good very frequently.

Yup.

I really liked Creep and it was a solid recommend for people casually looking for an interesting horror movie, but Creep 2 takes everything interesting about the first movie and twists and expands it in exactly the right way. It's fantastic.

Just let Brett Morgen edit all documentary footage from now on. Especially if it looks as good as the archival Ecktachrome footage does here.

I wish it was warm enough to snow. Most of Canada is under a deep freeze right now. It’s going to get down to -44 overnight, and likely not get above -30 until Monday.

The shark movie? Been meaning to check it out. The same people did a crocodile movie called Black Water that was well done and about as realistic as killer animal movies get.

Parents asked me to see The Shape of Water with them. I'm fairly sure they were expecting a straightforward creature feature, but they took the fish loving in stride. Beautiful movie.

My sister got me Kids These Days: Human Capital and the Making of Millenials for Christmas (because it was on my Amazon wishlist, not because she's a secret communist) and I finally finished it tonight. It's a great introduction to socialist ideas for a young person who might have just gotten out of college and is feeling pissed off and taken advantage of. It talks about the idea of children as human capital and how even as kids are putting more work in and becoming "better investments" they're less likely to pay off which is bullshit because jesus christ we're people not investments and how much homework you do in junior high or whether or not your resume includes enough extra-curriculars to get into a top school shouldn't have any effect on whether you are able to pay for food and shelter and poo poo.

it's also a hella downer and made me really angry but also quoted Accepted in a chapter header which is one of my favorite comedies that i wish were funnier so i could really encourage more people to watch it because at its core it is about how bullshit college is which is something i feel very passionate about even as i am back in school.
