I never get enough engineers in WOTC, so good for you.

I've found workshops more valuable in WOTC, even if I delete them later in the game.

Maybe they're considered activated on Defend the Device missions to allow them to attack the device. Sure beats the old "mission fail on turn one" situation Protect the Device can produce. Sectopods!!! :argh:

The first time I encountered the berserker queen was on a retaliation mission. I spent an hour sneaking around and finding nothing to shoot until I finally found the last Advent soldier get beat down by the Queen. Thanks for the help Queen!

So I started up a WOTC game, chose integrated DLC, and got up to early July without seeing any Rulers. Now I'm attacking a black site (which I really need to take down because the Avatar project is on its timer), and suddenly I get the Archon King in all his 100 hp+ glory. I haven't been doing too well in the strategic game anyway (it's been a while since I last played), and I simply don't have the tools and abilities to put a significant dent in him and force his retreat, so it looks like this is a game over.

With integrated DLC, is it normal to just get the best Ruler dunking on you like that without seeing his lesser brethren first, though?

AFAIK They show up in order of Viper, Berserker, Archon attached to facilities as they come in. So if there's a facility in April, June, and August saying there's a powerful alien guarding it, the one that opened in April will have the Viper, June's facility will have the Berserker, and August's will have the Archon. If you attack that third facility first though then it will always be the Archon King; it's tied to the facility itself.

That sucks though, the Archon King is by far the worst thing to fight. At worst what you could do is suicide run to plant the charges and evac who you can. What do you have available to you?

This is in fact normal.

The Rulers, instead of appearing randomly, are guarding various Avatar Facilities. Once you attack that facility, that ruler becomes active. I THINK the ruler that's guarding the facility is set when the facility spawns, but I may be wrong about that.

On an unrelated note, I just experienced the unrelenting horror that is a freshly flashbanged squad of stocks taking overwatch shots (mostly Ever Vigilant specialists, cause lots of MECS) at a Sectopod Prime that I just failed a hack attempt on (just tried to shut it down, rolled a critfail). Stock damage counts toward that "whenever they take damage" thing A Better ADVENT's Primes get.

That's pretty hosed up. I've had a hard game - I lost a lot of time at the start because I failed my first proper mission after Gatecrasher (a timed mission to kill a general) and missed out on an important engineer. This delayed my ability to open up rooms a lot and build comms, so the Avatar project just really ran away from me. On top of that, all the black sites are quite a distance away, so I've been concentrating on trying to blaze a path to them: the one I attacked just happened to be the closest one I could reach. I actually knew there was a Ruler there since I just built the Shadow Chamber, but I assumed it would be the Viper Queen, since I hadn't seen any others yet.

I have a reaper, so I guess I can restart and try and cheese it with her.

If you have a reaper and a sniper with squadsight you can just exploit that to take down the archon king. The rulers don't react to squadsite shoots. If the reaper is high enough rank to have banish you can also just attach a repeater and extended mag for an instant "murder this rear end in a top hat" button. It's cheesy but so is all the bullshit the AK throws at you so...

And if you just can't do it, have the reaper scout ahead, evac a turn before the reaper can plant the charges, then hope for the best with the reaper.

Yeah but doing that just means having to deal with a full health AK as a random surprise a mission or two latter when you're not ready and probably on a timer. It's best to just hit the rulers with everything you can at the facility mission.

I'm playing with the option that doubles everyones' HP for longer battles and I feel like it's already sort of turning into a nightmare when fighting Chosen, I'm assuming it's going to be nearly unplayable when I'm up against Alien Leaders?

Should I just restart now and turn it off? Does anyone have experience using that option in late-game?

Theres a mod that I'd been meaning to try called Delta strike or something like that, which increases everyone's staying power with a little more nuance: instead of just flat out doubling hp, it adds a mix of shields and armor, so that shredding and piercing attacks remain useful.

True, but if he needs to beat the facility in order to not lose that's sort of just the price he's going to have to pay. He could stock up on repeaters for later. :v:

I just got around to playing XCOM2 for the first time this week. Playing vanilla with a few UI mods only.

Kept coming across times when there'd be problems with line of sight if trying to do something sneaky.

E.g. Was today playing a map where I'm in the middle of a third-floor solid roof and the one mob on the ground can magically spot me and indeed shoot me as if the whole building's floors and internal walls are made of glass.

Found a fix online; in config/XcomGameCore.ini set:

code:
[XComGame.XComWorldData]
EnableThreadedWorldDataBuild=false
Loaded the same save point again and this issue with line of sight is fixed.

Apparently both the vanilla game and WOTC both still ship with this set to false because it can take longer to generate the map, but yeah - I don't mind waiting a few seconds for the map to load if it means I won't get unfairly blasted through solid walls and floors.

Long War 2 has this fix included already.

Apologies if this is common knowledge but search didn't find it mentioned in this thread.

EDIT: I mean false.

Yeah, I'm always surprised by how Firaxis manages to keep the game so hosed up. Also, everyone should be playing with Peek From Concealment for Vanilla+LW2 or WotC. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=865511007 or https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1123555539 respectively. Makes it so that you can run across a rooftop, get behind one of those low-cover railings, and not be seen by EVERYONE on the ground. It works so splendidly in action. You can run through a tile or two (or three or whatever you set it to) of vision without breaking concealment, as well, which is a fantastic tweak that makes the 'run into high cover and stay in concealment/low cover with altitude advantage and stay in concealment' tweaks work so well.

Hah, I actually like the mag weapons (especially their firing effects, because gauss weaponry will forever be cool) and think Predator Armor looks kind of lame, mostly because the selection of pieces is way less diverse than kevlar armor.

Speaking of which, I'm almost tempted to delete some of the cosmetic mods I got since they're making my already-bad loading times even worse. Also, lots of struggling with clipping issues.

How hosed am i right now, in Long War for EW, i've been kinda ignoring the whole arc thrower stuff for awhile and i got distracted by everything else going on. i've finally build the containment thing, but i dont have enough sectoid corpses to further arc thrower research since i've been focusing on my beams and armour and then my lovely poor air game. i've got cyberdiscs poping up now and its been awhile since i've seen a sectoid. I've lost russia to a terror attack when all i had was red shirts since everyone worth a drat was in the medbay, so i've lost my wealth of nations bonus and i hear i can get it back but i cant get to the point of getting that key because of no loving sectoids.

Aslo, its been a long while since i played and i've forgot how to get mec going, i got a gene lab and the cutscene that plays suggested i'd get to pick but i guess thats for vanilla since i only could build a gene lab... i've never really got pass this point before cyberdiscs constantly wreck my poo poo.

Luckily enough, it seems the values can be tweaked in an .ini file.

Unfortunately, a recurring theme I noticed in all three possible Beam-tier replacers is that they don't have models for the faction hero weapons. Understandable, but still a bummer, considering how the T3 Reaper rifle is probably the most egregious example of how badly the T3 aesthetics mesh with the rough-and-ready style of the tiers below it.

So the Chosen Warlock is a cheating piece of poo poo. I get into a mission to defend a resistance outpost. The map's centerpiece is this awesome 3-story resistance base, but someone made it too tall so it's impossible for the player to designate movement on the roof of the thing. And guess where the warlock keeps going? But I decide gently caress it, let's see if I can win it anyhow. It takes a reload, since he's up there making ghosts and mind controlling Mox every other turn. Out of frustration, I start sneaking my concealed ranger around the far side, to see if I can get a squadsight target on him. And the cheating fucker is edging away from my CONCEALED scout! What a purple dick. I move my ranger, and he mysteriously moves away. After a dozen turns, I end up herding him around a corner with my never-revealed ranger and put him down using pure sniper power, which would have been impossible if I hadn't just happened to bring along two snipers.

Another reason not to ironman this poo poo I guess.

In my Legendary run ADVENT mysteriously always scrambled and ran directly into the super-concealed Reaper every single time if she was at all in their movement radius. At one point a sectoid made a double move away from the rest of XCOM just to reveal the unit so someone else could shoot at her.

Also the Chosen Warlock can teleport VIPs out of the van you need to rescue them from and plop them next to the spectral army he's going to make, since apparently he's secretly the Warlock's ally (I still love that after the spectral lancer murdered the VIP the Warlock had a line telling me not to feel bad that that happened), but I think that's more just VIPs are busted as hell in WOTC. You can activate them yourself if you throw an ultrasonic lure at them then tell them to just walk out of the van. The door even stays locked so you can still hack it for prizes.
