Wait. What happened here? As far as I knew, Havok was just a physics plug in for game engines. Was it something more?

Also, What the hell happened to Havok? Why'd they just up and bail on it?

Havok was made popular by their Havok Physics SDK. Until other alternatives came around, it was the de facto standard for physics in games. And it was super expensive.

They later added Havok Cloth, AI, and Destruction, which rounded the suit to 4 products.

2007: Havok was bought by Intel

During all this, with CryEngine, UE, Unity, all making headway in game engines, Havok was missing one thing in the big picture: a graphics engine

At the time, the little known Trinigy Vision Engine, was the more cost effective game engine which was not only based in C++, but cost less than $50K for a single title, and yearly support costs were less than $20K. For all intent and purposes, a lot cheaper than the alternatives during that period in time. Remember that Unity was nowhere as advanced as it is today, while UE3 and CE3 were also built for specific types of games.

Instead of building a new game engine for LoD, as I had done in the past, I licensed Trinigy in 2010. I had access to UE4 at the time, but because it wasn't production ready, Epic said not to use it.

2011: in order to add a graphics engine to their suite, Havok went out and bought Trinigy Vision Engine, and re-branded it as Havok Vision Engine.

https://techcrunch.com/2011/08/08/intels-havok-acquires-3d-game-engine-provider-trinigy/

At the time, it supported PC/XB360/PS3, and they were working on PC improvements, as well as support for XB1 and PS4, which were the "next gen" consoles at the time.

The last news of the engine, was the 8.2 release in 2011

https://www.havok.com/vision-engine-8-2-brings-3d-technologies-cross-platform/

2015: Havok is bought from Intel by Microsoft

https://venturebeat.com/2015/10/02/microsoft-buys-havok-from-intel-promises-to-keep-licensing-physics-tech/

We then got confirmation of what we feared; that they were no longer going to be supporting XB1 and PS4.

What we weren't prepared for was them completely dropping support for the Vision Engine. And they did. Not only that, but they stopped licensing it, supporting it, and removed it from their website products page

https://www.havok.com/products/

We were all hosed. And like the other teams who had licensed it, we had a choice of either to continue working with an unsupported engine, or port to a different engine.

The engine had some issues that still needed resolving, and those were never getting fixed. For us, it was worse because I had spent quite a bit of time and money working toward a multi-platform (PC/XB1/PS4) game because it would have been a huge battle just to focus on PC alone. That is why we used Unity for LoD Tactics which was released on multi-platforms few years back.

So that's the story of Havok Vision Engine.

I love this stuff. Like everything with Star Citizen, it's incredible how many red flags are hidden in plain sight for backers to willfully ignore.

Ok hold up. This AtV is from Mar 24, 2016. That dead eyes guy says they're working on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2OVeUxfjuM&t=1159s
• big landing zone
• large base for PU

I'm going to assume these evolved into the landing zone we saw on NOT Coruscant or the Mining facility. The large base turned into Gri Hex or something. So it only took 647 days to get a new level into the wannabe sandbox.

Cao Ni Ma
May 25, 2010

The filthy leavers that were working on those quit after their contract ran out and didnt reup. They got grim hex out but it looks like CIG decided to change things up or more probably just didnt have the tech in place yet for them to finish the base on time so they just left them with 1+ year old assets by now that CIG STILL cant use
