OXBALLS DOT COM posted:The X-files was all about dealing with the aftermath of the cold war and talking about all the awful stuff the US did during its height through the lens of alien conspiracies from that time. A lot of the stuff, like secret human experimentation, mind-control, cover-ups, assassinations, etc., are all direct allegories to actual known US government programs from the 50s-70s. It was all stuff people knew was happening and spread through these half-truths even before the real proof came out slowly as it was declassified, in various accidental document leaks, etc. I wonder if anyone's written a good piece on the various types of conspiracy/supernatural theories and fads and how they correlate to current events and zeitgeist.

Holy moly the 9th season was rough to slog through, I was completely checked out for most of it (so was everyone else but Robert Patrick, to be fair). I can't believe they thought an hour long trial that consisted of thrown together clips with narration was the best way to end things Honestly, I can't think of many TV shows that have a half-decent finale. The X-Files one was certainly forgettable, and as much I love Doggett, I could have done without seasons 8-9.

I really like War of the Coprophages. It's a shame it doesn't seem to get as much love as Darin's other episodes (including from Darin himself, though the guy does seem like his own toughest critic).

I will take mediocre seasons if we get at least one Darin-written episode out of it.

Season 7's finale works as a series finale tbh. I'm pretty sure it was written as a potential series finale too.

Frankly once Duchovny went into special guest star mode the show was over, and the show was spinning its wheels for a while before that.

Parks and Rec stuck the landing. But, yeah, X-files has one of the worst finales I've ever seen. And then coming back to I Want to Believe was just... wow. It was so, so bad.

I had somehow blocked out Young Not-Scully and Young Not-Mulder. Carter couldn’t even be bothered to do anything marginally interesting with them like swapping the skeptic/believer roles.

I didn't find I Want To Believe all that objectionable, if anything it was the factor that kept me drawn in. Also it had a pretty rad end credits sequence.

I remember when they were filming IWTB, Carter had fake werewolf suits made so that pictures of them leaked and for a while people thought that the movie was going to be about werewolves. Still kind of wish it was. The only things about it that really stuck out were that the villains ticked off every single conservative nightmare of the Bush era (Russians, illegal immigrants, stem cell researchers, gay marriage) and Duchovny blamed the movie tanking on The Dark Knight coming out the previous week. Pops Mgee posted:I liked the Battlestar finale but I know a lot of people don’t. What was it? It's always interesting to me to see how many huge events in TV shows end up just being sort of...a whim. If you read Memory Alpha when you're watching Star Trek there's shitloads of things that they just decided to do at the last minute and I'm sure Xfiles has that in spades.

From what I remember, the mutineers were going to be successful in the rest of the fleet, which would have jumped away from the Galactica and been destroyed by the Cylons, leaving the Galactica as the last human ship. After the final battle in the Cylon HQ, the Galactica would jump away to Earth but be damaged enough to crash on it, rather than going into orbit (and causing the survivors to be stranded on Earth rather than by choice). The ending shot would have been archaeologists digging beneath an ancient temple and finding the Galactica. There were a few other things with changed character motivations - I think Ellen Tigh would have actually joined Cavil's side - but at this point I can't remember the specifics.

Stultus Maximus posted:Indeed. For my money, the two best series finales of all time are quite probably All Good Things, and Futurama's Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings. Both episodes are not only fantastic episodes of their respective shows in and of themselves, but both also sort of serve to encapsulate and echo the themes of their series as a whole, and provide both an excellent sense of closure, as well as the feeling that the adventures will continue all the same, even though we as the audience wont necessarily be privy to them.
