One of the most bass-ackwards things I've seen in the OR that happens constantly is they put someone under, and then go "Okay, do we have everything we need to do this surgery?" Like, doctors and nurses think it's beneath them or something to check if everything needed has been picked for the case properly. Yes, it is someone elses job, but hey, maybe don't put someone to sleep assuming you have everything at hand. It doesn't help either that doctors have no compunctions about taking something from another doctors surgical supplies if they need it, and not telling anyone.

Doctors I can expect, but nurses?

Maybe it's just a case of triple checking everything just in case you don't gently caress up. I mean, pilots and everyone on the ground did everything correct as well, you'd assume, but I'm still happy they follow up with a checklist that they both follow, just to be sure. Actually I think this doctor thing is described in "a checklist manifesto" and it's worth reading.

It is a case of triple checking. There’s an official time out procedure before a case starts that may appear kind of casual but is meant to ensure everything is thought of and ready for a case before it begins. This is also the point where they check to make sure they are operating on the right part of the right patient. But there are literally hundreds of pre-packed instrument kits in a hospital and each procedure may need a few instruments from many different ones. Aneurysm clippings for instance require a hilarious amount of kits to be opened. And then some surgeons have very specific desires regarding which instruments they personally use for the job. Surgeons really aren’t allowed to get away with throwing instruments like a child anymore, but i new an older guy who of handed the wrong forceps would just throw them on the ground and stand there. Only one OR nurse could work with him because of all his nuanced preferences. So anyways yeah it all does require a lot of dumb back and forth checking. Can’t play basketball for poo poo though.

I remember this pianist who during an abdominal surgery the doc left some wadding or a retractor or both w/e in her. She was sterilized by it. And when the pain kicked in and another team went to clean the trash they'd left in her out the statute of limitations on medical malpractice had run out. Nice woman, great musician, all busted up from the sternum down.

I'd rather be completely out for the "oh poo poo we forgot the scalpels again" discussion. Or the tantrums Blind Rasputin mentioned. When I got my eyes lasered, it was pretty clear that the doctor couldn't quite get the corneal slice to unfold properly when doing the post-extraction check on the left eye, so he just shrugged and called it good enough rather than continuing to mess with it. I kinda wish I hadn't seen that, even though I've got better than 20/20 vision now. There's a level of casualness in the medical field that is slightly worrying if you're not prepared for it.

My dad was a surgeon. My sister & I got to check out a surgery at an OR one time when we were kids; he was removing a cancerous lung from a 53 year-old smoker. Seeing the black, crusty mass surrounded by blood & still-alive human organs made me nauseous enough to leave the operating room. As I was leaving he said, “Now that you’ve seen what smoking does to you, I hope you never do it.” For lunch he took us out for barbecue ribs. My dad had an interesting sense of humor. Funny picture:

Except for the fact that there's a higher-than-average alcoholism rate among doctors, so maybe it shouldn't be all that surprising.

No but you don't understand YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND it's an entire loving industry based on a dumb joke they stole from The Simpsons: So they drew a whole bunch of pictures of Jesus dancing and then made up steps for them: Then they went to all the trouble of creating a a 4 cell lenticular cover for the loving book: Who the gently caress even makes lenticular images these days? How did they find a company that would do this for them? But it didn't end there, next they released jiggling dashboard Jesus merchandise: And then they started printed sequels and the whole thing started all over again: WHERE WILL IT END
