Mine still has the porn DVDs. Our media aisles are smaller and there's less of it, so something has to fill space.

Hmm, what if they turned the in store coffee shop into a coffee and head shop?

As someone who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the height of the Atkins craze, it was truly amazing. Like, everyone having low carb options wasn't that important to me, but what WAS was everyone posting the carb content of their food everywhere. Not having to ballpark poo poo was great for someone who was just starting out in the world of carb counting for insulin injections. Of course, once the Atkins craze faded away, so too did the amount of restaurants that posted their carb info. Most fast food places still have it available but you typically have to ask.

Also to that goon who has to piss constantly, have you had your blood sugar levels tested? That was my primary symptom when I discovered I was diabetic, because my pancreas decided to die slowly instead of suddenly and my body got used to elevated blood glucose levels (you end up having to piss out all that sugar).

didn't walgreens just buy rite-aid? how many of those closures are affected by that? I vaguely recall them saying they weren't going to rebrand a bunch of rite-aids but I'm not sure.

They bought Duane Reed and they closed a bunch of them that were located next to existing locations (which is a ton of them)

It's complicated, Walgreens is going to end up with only half the Rite-Aid stores as a result of the like 4th or 5th agreement on it. There were various concerns with them buying out all Rite-Aids and also there was a previous deal fro a different chain to buy out the bulk that Walgreens wasn't buying.

Why is retail stock doing so well? It was a solid year, especially compared to previous years, but the basic trends are all there.

Should I just short the gently caress out of it or is this more than a dead cat bounce?

Well a lot of the worst offenders are dead or so close that they've become irrelevant to the wider market risk. And some of the deaths and near deaths of rival and related businesses result in other companies having a bonanza of oppurtunity.

That's a reasonably hypothesis but it only works if the fundamentals of the sector are solid.

Did retail just get too big so it is going through a period of downsizing in response to new things like online shopping? If so, that's obviously not good because so many people work retail, but it doesn't mean the death of the industry. I'd buy the "big mall with 200 jobs instead of 300 jobs" explanation but that runs counter to the narrative found in this thread.

Expectations are built into the stock price, so to an extent, price changes can reflect whether the outlook is improving or worsening more than whether it's good or bad.

It also depends which one you're looking at and how far back you're looking. Macy's, JCPenney, and Bon-Ton are still down significantly since a year ago and Sears is a zombie. What Wall Street is expecting to happen is basically a big wave of closures and mall doom, but that the stronger retailers will survive at better-performing locations as they update their in-store experience and improve their online presence.

People with Type 1 Diabetes can lead normal lives and eat reasonable amounts of normal foods, including fast food. You skip the milkshake, but you're allowed to eat a hoagie.

Jesus Christ.

Edit: To be clear, Type 1 Diabetics treat with injected insulin, and can adjust dosing depending on meal size. It's important to know how many carbs you are eating, to adjust your insulin dose accordingly.

My wife has celiacs and it can be super loving frustrating because of dumbasses who say "oh yeah I'm gluten free" and then eat s loving piece of bread. gently caress you.

If my wife eats gluten it's like death. It's a loving autoimmune disease, and is pretty well understood and diagnosed abroad.

There are restaurants we avoid, and when we go out to eat we check menus online to see if they can accommodate, If they can't, we find somewhere else.

Freakonomics has a good podcast about gluten and celiacs. http://freakonomics.com/podcast/demonization-gluten/

That and the Republican tax plan has a huge reduction in corporate taxes so basically every company that isn't currently a cindered husk of its former, burning down self (i.e., Sears) is probably doing well on the stock market. Walmart is also an enormous company with a lot of inertia that probably won't go away any time soon. With Republicans in power expect something somewhere between "nothing" and "gently caress all" to happen about all the stupid bullshit corporations get up to. The stock market has been blasting upward ever since Trump won.

Plus with all of the buyouts and whatever if you buy a stock, it goes up, then another company buys the company to gobble it up that can be a decent payout.

Of course that won't do much good if Amazon and pals successfully eat all of the retail sales or the economy getting increasingly lovely for the non-right makes the pitchforks and torches come out. We shall see.

Yeah. To clarify a bit, since I'm a type 1 diabetic and it's come up before, type 2 is where the pancreas can't keep up with the body's needs (usually due to obesity), while type 1 is an autoimmune disease where the insulin-producing cells stop working entirely. It's managed by manually regulating insulin intake, and while you still want to avoid sugary stuff (since it tends to spike blood sugar) you can still eat normal food and such as long as you count the carbs and adjust the dosage appropriately. Naturally it's still a good idea to eat careful and healthy since obesity makes it harder to manage the dosage (since you're basically combining types 1 and 2) and the higher risks of heart and kidney diseases and such.

Yup, although when I was first diagnosed, my gradual onset made it so I had become dangerously thin, which was compounded by my fear of needles making it so I was eating basically two small meals a day and avoiding snacks. My doctor basically told me to buck up and go eat a large DQ Blizzard a couple times a week or I was probably going to kill myself with anorexia.

As long as they can keep convincing people they're the cheapest option for a lot of stuff(without the customers cluing in that their products are cheap because they're made like poo poo, even if it's the same brand you'd find elsewhere), they're going to be fine. Same reason places like TJ Maxx are still doing okay - people still want to buy stuff, but income/COL squeezes mean they're going for bargain bin places.

Wasn't Sears also uniquely poised in the 90's to supplant Amazon before it even existed, with a robust catalog and shipping infrastructure, financial/banking connections, and the added benefit of B&M facilities to bolster early internet service? I recall reading an article somewhere.
