There's obviously going to be a republican in that seat in a couple of years. Here's hoping THEY will be more centrist, because from Alabama, that's hoping for alot. e- Heh, He's still going?

But he's not gonna do that so

Hispanics are going to love Republicans because Democrats didn't try hard enough to combat anti-Hispanic Republican policies? Uh... At best they are going to decide "gently caress voting, both sides are equally bad" which is good for Republicans but hardly the same as love.

Helith posted:As a filthy Euro socialist I would say to pool and redistribute at the Federal level because you just know how the red states will distribute the money. Also it should be weighted to disadvantaged children, so the more in poverty children a school has, the more money they get. You're correct that that would be ideal, but it would be even more dramatically impossible in the US; property taxes here have always been local and a primary source of state-level funding especially but not exclusively for schools. We'll have national free health care for a century before we federalize property taxes. TheNewt posted:AKA: Taking away the incentive for anyone to ever want to raise property taxes. Nah, just all raises would have to happen at the state level. There's a huge problem in southern states where rich and/or predominantly white areas have well-funded public schools but poor and/or traditionally african-american areas are desperately underfunded; see, e.g., http://www.corridorofshame.com/ . Equitable need-based redistribution at the state level is the only remotely feasible way to solve that problem, especially since you actually have to pay higher salaries for teachers in rural areas because who wants to live in Podunk Nowhere if they're smart enough to teach?

TheNewt posted:E.G. Never. Ok you're right, there's nothing to be done so let's throw up our hands and surrender At some point any proposal for school funding reform involves a broad based property tax increase. The only way to do that, realistically, is to get the poorer folks to vote for a tax hike on the richer folks, and that has to happen via state level reform because county level is the current broken system and a federal level property tax reform is even less feasible than a state level one. In short you got any better ideas?

My favorite thing about the Secret Service is that they also investigate financial crimes and forgeries, and they wear the same uniform to do that as they do to protect the president. When I was in college, a bunch of morons thought it would be a good idea to use the (then) high end printer they'd been using to spool off fake IDs to print some $20 bills. The first we heard of it was when 5 black SUVs pulled up in front of the dorm and a bunch of MiB and WiB with earpieces ran inside and then ran out again carrying stacks of boxes and filing cabinets. Like one of Jimmy Carter's detail looks like the fat cop in Beverly Hills Cop. I'm sure he could still kill me seven times over, but he's not going to look good doing it. The further out you get from the Oval Office the worst they must get. Obama still has top notch security, but Betty Ford probably had Nic Cage.
