I believe I have
an appointment.
Mr. Goongala?
The Bronx episode with the Amish boy, the glaucoma episode that immediately follows it, and a handful of moments with The Quarrymen, who are a good concept and decently designed, but are also a bit of a letdown after 65 episodes of Goliath and co. fighting mythological figures and brainwashed clones.

It doesn’t get unwatchable. It does get preachy.

Finally saw Coco, which I thought was really great. It took a bit too long to get started and the Land of the Living seemed a little uninspired. But overall great movie.

Finally saw The Boss Baby (not that I was clamoring for it or anything). It was pretty harmless, all things considered. Sort of a garbage script elevated by a team that was actually pretty good with visual storytelling. But good God does the thing drag. Like “Oh we’re at the climactic chase...oh no there’s an hour left, how is there an hour left?”

Generically speaking, the music is completely different. "You're a Mean One" is a straightforward, jazzy novelty pop song. The music of Halloween is Grinch Night is more influenced by psychedelic, progressive, and experimental music. It's basically just slightly closer to outsider music than Frank Zappa, Henry Cow, or Moondog.

edit:

Barbie and the Rockers is still the cream of the trash crop, but Barbie: Princess Charm School is easily the most technically impressive of the Barbie movies I've seen.

Never read the Ferdinand book, watched the movie. Kind of a schizophrenic climax there. I mean obviously the movie wasn’t gonna end with the matador killing Ferdinand an slicing off his ears and tail or Ferdinand goring the toreador through the gut/rectum but it went from the obvious “Ferdinand turns the tables and bullfights the toreador to rob him of his ego and dignity” to “the toreador is about to kill Ferdinand but then the audience point their thumbs down to spare him like in the Roman Coliseum”
Still it was a lot of fun and the latin american dub of the german horses was hilarious

Technically speaking, yes. That's Barbie: Princess Charm School, a very well made, but reactionary animated film that just happens to have a relatively small budget.

The catch with Barbie films is that most of them are merely mediocre, whereas what you actually want is rarified, crass commercialism, Barbie as anti-Christ. But contemporary films are much more homogenized, Barbie now has to perform the dual role of being an infallible 'every girl' but also an independent and progressive outsider, the stories are generic morality plays and fairy tales, the only real draw is the ugliness of the animation and music.

Probably, the Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures had some pretty good moments. See, if movies like "Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time" and "The Lego Batman Movie" have taught me anything it's this: talented people can make a good movie out of any concept no matter how ridiculous. I mean it doesn't always happen, but it can.

We've been discussing the Tom & Jerry adaptation of Willy Wonka over the the "Who greenlighted?" thread and I went to the bother of giffing some shots so we could compare the original to the animated version:

quote:

I'm pretty sure they projected and traced over the original film's frames for most of the adapted scenes instead of drawing them from scratch using animation models

https://i.imgur.com/hzucWc8.gifv
https://i.imgur.com/bZSZio9.gifv
Edit: Oh man, they couldn't be bothered animating new dance moves for them but they also couldn't be bothered animating every frame of the original sequence so they just traced every other frame and called it done so the end result is that their feet just wobble about the place randomly

https://i.imgur.com/XWIeXqP.gifv
https://i.imgur.com/2Vt5kwx.gifv

Edit: ha ha ha, the background artists were obviously supposed to hide the yellow mushroom behind a vine or something but they forgot so it looks like it just leaps onto Wonka's cane from somewhere below frame :v:

Oh man, we already knew that the film was ugly as hell if you looked at individual frames but it's somehow even uglier and more of an insult to the original if you compare the lifted sequences

I can state with total conviction that watching Barbie movies is more rewarding than slogging through the Tom & Jerry back catalogue. There are always gems here and there, but T&J being garbage is not a recent thing, these roots go deep.

There has been nothing of value made of the Tom and Jerry franchise since at least the 70s.

I think the Tom And Jerry Movie might be valuable for historical/educational purposes, like Birth Of A Nation. It's a pretty good example of how people hosed up animated movies in the time period it was made in.

The standard does not exist so that it can be enforced. The standard exists so that we can say there is a standard.

Boss Baby was 'DreamWorks face' distilled, so it was a prime candidate for 'who greenlighted this poo poo?!' What's being avoided is exactly that it's unremarkable, that it would actually be better if it were exceptionally bad, because the worst sin is mediocrity.

My working theory is someone started to make a dialogue-free/lite short film based off the book, and then a studio note came in saying “Make it 2 hours and with Alec Baldwin”.
