And it did get super, super involved. And histology is like...it's like the barest glimpse of taxidermy from an entirely scientific viewpoint specifically focused on finding cancer from biopsies of people still alive. You taxidermy small pieces of flesh rather than the entire critter, and that's enough. And even for a 6-month subject for an undergraduate course, you get involved. Way too much involved. I had a lab partner wanting to do extra biopsies on the rat testicles simply because the current ones didn't show the tubes quite right. And she did it too, even though I thought mine were fine. You get hooked on the microscopic stuff. It is disappointing as hell when a muscle stain comes out wrong, especially when you want a comparison between skeletal and smooth muscle. Though the people who try to preserve the entire animal with its fur and poo poo, they're the weird ones, I agree.

Google is failing me but I swear to god I read an article at some point about a "taxidermy" giant frog that is clearly Papier-mâché and the local town or whatever refuses to allow any DNA testing to confirm species/reality.
