This is the number of "citizens", which CIG likes to imply is the same as the number of paying customers (it is not). There is no recent public information on the number of customers; Turbulent gave a statement a while ago that implied the ratio of UEE Citizens to backers was in the neighborhood of 2:1. I would surmise that the ratio is somewhat more skewed than that now. There is also reason to believe that most of the project's publicly stated funding, if the picture of reality implied by the tracker is anywhere close to accurate, comes from a very small core of mega-whales.

Mega-whales and manipulations make far more sense than organic demand. To play the game is to but endure the game at this point, and this in spite of assurances throughout 2017 that 3.0 would be more polished and less buggy than their usual updates as Chris expected a big influx of new and returning players on the heels of launch.

It didn’t happen.

I mean it’s easy at this point to take the trainwreckiness of things for granted but sometimes it still hits me anew. They kicked off the 2016 fundraising season with 3.0 hype at Gamescom 2016 with a December target launch. After a half year delay they announced a massive downsizing of 3.0 to release in June. Then delays hit the downsized 3.0 and we got Burndown and assurances that Micro 3.0 was taking longer due to polish and bugfixing. Then as the fundraising season approached its 2017 zenith, they had no choice but to push buggy, unpolished, year late Micro 3.0 to the PTU. To postpone it would’ve been too big a dampener on backer confidence and they’d already absorbed too many blows throughout 2017. The release of 3.0 was at one time longed for as triumph, validation, and vindication yet the end of 2017 sees it unambiguously pushed out in desperation.

And as all this transpired, both media and general gaming public sentiment just grew increasingly skeptical, refunds grew and the faithful legalized dissent on /SC.

In the midst of all of that, they took on a payday loan that put their single player IP as collateral and got hit with a surprisingly comprehensive lawsuit backed by a legit scary lawfirm.

And this all just what we know about. CIG ended the year with so many self-inflicted wounds, with Chris Roberts holding the blade the vast majority of the time. As usual.

The time to start building bridges to span from the enthusiast early backers and whales to the more mainstream pc gaming public passed some time ago, and rather than building bridges, CIG in their infinite wisdom erected the walls of echo chambers. The development missteps were matched foot for foot by the Marketing and Community Management ones.

They haven’t done everything wrong (there are some nice moments and little victories here and there), but they haven’t done the big things right and those looking at CIG from inside and from out can feel it. And having not done so, where can the enduring new demand really come from but from the unhealthiest of sources?

Yeah, I suspect that's Skadden not laying out the playing field in one submission, probably to both mess with CIG and hiring their defense, and probably some preemptive corpse prep should CIG miss the deadline.

Let's imagine that SC FPS isn't a complete pile of poo poo and was playable to the same extent CoD is. Does "more lethal" basically mean one hit and you're hosed? Because that sounds boring as gently caress to me, but you can tell all these backers are like, "Yes, with our obsessive military knowledge we will be the winners this time!" which is great because they'd just get wiped up by the same CoD style players regardless.

Yeah, it´s pure product differentiating marketing spiel aimed at driving unit sales. Except it is made on a dream and therefore anything goes, as opposed to an actual product you and I can test against the claim.

Back in COD4 days I used to exclusively play on servers with 1 hit kill mechanics. It was a blast but very unforgiving.

e. IIRC cod4 came with 3 game modes for persistent servers; normal, classic with quake style hitpoints and hardcore with near instadeath.

Yeah, PC Gaming is obviously doomed. The best sellers containing a wide variety of genres and settings, and some of them from very small indie studios. Obviously doomed and in need of a hero to save PC Gaming from consoles and big bad publishers. Sigh. Imo, this is a golden age of gaming for anyone except people looking for the matrix or those desperately wanting to relive their first hit of gaming smack (which won't happen).

I think that assessment is accurate. Something that the forum dads and I think Brookes was adamant about never having in Elite.

Nah, it's David Braben who doesn't like the way guilds behave he described them as acting like Mafioso in an interview before launch. Before getting super excited and theorycrafting about it you should remember that players will always have the choice of not logging into open, so ED guilds are unlikely to satisfy the galactic domination itch if it requires inflicting dominion over other players.

A fundamental design flaw in Intel's processor chips has forced a significant redesign of the Linux and Windows kernels to defang the chip-level security bug.

Programmers are scrambling to overhaul the open-source Linux kernel's virtual memory system. Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to publicly introduce the necessary changes to its Windows operating system in an upcoming Patch Tuesday: these changes were seeded to beta testers running fast-ring Windows Insider builds in November and December.

Crucially, these updates to both Linux and Windows will incur a performance hit on Intel products. The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 per cent slow down, depending on the task and the processor model. More recent Intel chips have features – specifically, PCID – to reduce the performance hit.

5-30% processor performance hit incoming lmao
