Very very cool contour drawing. I think it's pretty accurate to the reference photo, and I did get a sense of weight from how you drew the baby's bottom. The only thing is his right cheek is a little too elongated. I didn't notice anything wrong with the woman's face until I read your post and compared it to the reference photo. It looks like you just gave her more of an upturned nose, which looks baby-like, but plenty of adults have them.

Thanks. Yeah I see what you mean, I think I misplaced some contours in the butt and in her face due to the shadows.

Some dumb trash I drew today.

I still haven't found coloring style I'm pleased with. I've seen some people paint with colors that aren't blended super hard with plainly visible strokes. I tried doing that here, but whenever I do it myself it just feels wrong. like there's some magic balance for blending and strokes I haven't found.

There's a magic balance for everyone, have you been messing around with your brush settings A Lot?
I use Artweaver and here's some quick samples on my fave brush and how much difference a couple of settings can make:

By fooling around with the bleed, opacity, jitter and grain settings you can greatly vary what a single brush can do, which can help you find what you need. For visible strokes, try a brush that's uneven or at an angle that has hard outlines - the soft-edged round brushes tend to come out a bit blobby, which is great for soft light, but less so for form construction. If the brushstrokes look too harsh, add bleed or lower opacity to blend them in, or use a bigger brush.

Also, layering your colours can make a hell of a difference, just paint a transparent tone on top of your base colour and keep piling on, working towards the top layer, which will have the most defined strokes. For a rich red you might start with dark brown, layer several tones of orange-to-red on top, then finish with the actual red.

Having said all that, this is my arts talent for today so you know I'm a pro, totally capable of giving advice:

For this, I kept the brush on a very high bleed for a watercoloury feel, painted the dragon completely yellow, and then smooshed the other colours on top of it. You can see the armvine-red is just a single pale passover on top of the yellow, whereas the ears-red is a lovingly layered affair of multiple hues of red.

This thread feels appropriate for this question, given how many awesome life drawings are getting posted; the school I'm currently at has classes that include life drawing, and the grad program I'll be applying to in the next two years requires life drawing samples as part of my portfolio.

I'm trying to decide if I should just go to a life drawing meet up once a week over the summer (I'm in a major city and there's a lot to choose from) and rely on peer advice/work on technique alone, or if I'd be hurting myself not having a dedicated instructor guiding a class.

Obviously it depends on the instructor, the meet up, etc, but I'm curious if there's a general consensus in this thread on the best path. I'll be asking my advisors advice as well, but as a non traditional student/mostly self taught I'd like multiple perspectives.

Aside from the black splishes on the left, the errant blue dot and yellow stripe on the right, the only thing I'd change is make the name bigger. At the moment it's slightly lost among the legs. In fact, have you tried stretching the name below the dog n grill and just forgoing the feet altogether or something to that effect? Other than that, your colours, shading and forms are clear and everything is easy to "read".

I made another dragon. Brb gonna attend Dragon Drawers Anonymous.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking to transition to digital drawing (I'll post my analog stuff later!) but I'm wondering what the cheapest/most efficient way of getting in to digital drawing is. I'm buying a laptop this week and I'd like to be able to draw on it. What're some good options/resources/places to look? I don't know where to begin.

pirate photoshop or paint tool sai or if youre a weirdo sketchbook

I've never enjoyed using sketchbook idk why other people like it so much other than being free

My advice is buy clip studio paint when it's on sale for <$20 it's like 90% as fully featured as photoshop at a tiny fraction of the price of actually buying it, or way more convenient than pirating at a pretty small fee. Oh also probably buy a huion 610 pro, if that's still the go to budget friendly tablet

its kind of a grid with layers on one axis and frames on the other axis. you can also cut the frames into sections if you're making a sprite (which is basically its intended purpose). here's what my timeline looked like the one time i actually used it 2 make a sprite

What I'm kinda hearing is that laptop-wise it doesn't super duper matter what I pick. I haven't bought a laptop in a million thousand years but I guess just like whatever can handle the software just fine?

I make games!

I use MyPaint and Krita, which are both free. I'm not really sure how MyPaint is these days, I'm still working with a version that's a couple of years out of date by now. Both are pretty solid though, and especially with Krita you should have more than enough tools at your disposal to start out.

I'm not sure how much power you'd need for that laptop, because when I'm drawing huge resolutions with massive brushes, I've managed to make any program lag. I'm not sure if this is pure processing power needed or what. Either way, don't go for the cheapest option, and absolutely get a drawing tablet.

I've got the Huion 1060PLUS and it's just freaking fantastic, and looks to be bit over 80bux on amazon. Would recommend.

Have a look at the different free art programs and see which one you like best. I use Artweaver, but out of the free ones that haven't been mentioned yet, there's also Gimp.
Paint Tool Sai doesn't cost much. Photoshop always has free trials for like 2 days and then you pay through the nose forever and ever afterwards (seriously, monthly fees) and fuuuuck that.

Not much, honestly. I abandon a lot. Physical media, painting in particular, takes a lot more planning for me. I hadn’t decided on a palette or anything, so I felt like it was getting away from me. It’s a painting for my brother who made us an amazing coffee table for trade—so it’s important to me that it’s right. Plus I got a chance to visit recently and see the dog in person, so now I have a better idea of his personality.
