Along those lines, this might not be to everyone's taste, but Dark Horse put out a comic a while back that's an adaptation of Lucas' original first rough drafts called 'The Star Wars'

Wookieepedia posted:

The universe of The Star Wars features the Jedi-Bendu as having been the personal bodyguards of a generally benevolent Emperor for 100,000 years, before the rise of the villainous Knights of Sith. At its core, the story features a young Annikin Starkiller, son of former Jedi Bendu Kane Starkiller, leaving their homeworld Utapau in the Kessil system for Aquilae, a planet which is still independent of the New Galactic Empire. Whereas the finished Episode IV featured Obi-Wan Kenobi in the role of the wise elder, The Star Wars has an older Luke Skywalker in the role of teacher to young protagonist Annikin Starkiller.

Aquilae, home of Princess Leia, is targeted by the Empire for conquest due to its advanced cloning technologies. The Aquilaen King learns of the plot from one of his spies, Clieg Whitsun, who is an operative on the Imperial capital planet Alderaan. In defense of his world, the Aquilaen King attacks the Empire's Space Fortress, causing a pair of droids to crash down into the inhospitable Jundland Wastes region of the planet.[3]

The King dies shortly thereafter, moving Princess Leia into the position of the Empire's target for a puppet ruler. Annikin Starkiller is now Padawan to Luke Skywalker, and the pair travel to protect the Princess. After rescuing her, the pair lead her through the Jundland Wastes to the spaceport town Gordon, where they meet Han Solo. In this story, Solo is a Urellian, a tall reptilian with a reputation for hunting Wookiees on their home planet of Yavin.[3]

Solo, an old friend of Kane Starkiller, charters a freighter off-world, captained by an individual named Valorum. While escaping from Imperial patrols, Kane dies sacrificing himself to save the others, and Valorum is revealed as a Sith Knight.[3]

After escaping from Valorum by stealing an Imperial ship, the protagonists are chased through an asteroid field and forced to land on the Wookiee homeworld. There they align with the Wookiees, who are in the midst of fighting Urellians, and meet a Wookiee named Chewbacca. The group gathers at the home of a pair of anthropologists, Owen and Beru Lars, while Leia is recaptured by Imperial forces and taken to the Space Fortress.[3]

Rushing back to Aquilae to save Leia, Annikin dons stormtrooper armor to infiltrate the Space Fortress, but is captured in the process. A largely off-screen Darth Vader orders Valorum to kill Starkiller, but Valorum has a change of heart and sets Starkiller free. Starkiller rescues Leia and escapes just in time, as Luke Skywalker leads a squadron of fighters piloted by Wookiees to destroy the Space Fortress.[3]

Returning to Aquilae, now-Queen Leia appoints Annikin Starkiller "Lord Protector of Aquilae."

From what i gather, the new trilogy (that we're seeing unfold right now) is based off of lucas' basic ideas. But the problem is that they took those ideas and made them more bland.

Looking at the big picture, there's not much thats fundamentally wrong with the story or characters. Its been 30+ years since the Empire fell and the Rebels formed the New Republic. But the surviving fragments of the Empire are still out there and are starting to coalesce around a new supreme leader and are starting to win some victories and retake some lost ground. Luke is training some new Jedis but loses one or more of them to the dark side and they join the First Order. Luke disappears, and the New Republic starts getting its rear end kicked. All of this is more or less okay.

But did we really need everything to look exactly like it did in the Original Trilogy? X-wings, tie fighters, at-ats, stormtroopers, etc. Its like everything is exactly the same. And did we need the plot structure to be nearly beat-for-beat the same as A New Hope?

The basic idea is okay and could've made for some cool movies but they sorta dropped the ball in the art design and basic plot of Episode 7. So they may be drawing from Lucas' basic ideas but they've obviously filtered them through a process of "Make the first movie as much like the Originals as possible, stay as far away from the Prequels as possible, play it safe with the design of the vehicles and costumes and such, try to copy what worked for A New Hope, etc."

In addition to everything you said, wouldn't it have been a lot simpler and added more complex story line to TLJ (instead of Canto Bight) if the reason the First Order was able to track the Resistance was because they had Finn and Finn had a tracking module embedded in him?

That would have been way better than simply having the First Order able to track them via some brand-new technology. This is going to sound stupid and maybe it is, but i dont like the idea of new technology in Star Wars. Like, the idea that they've invented a miraculous new type of device that revolutionizes everything. Here, the First Order has a new type of tracker that can simply track ships across hyperspace, without a tracking device or anything on the target ship. From what i gathered, they can just...know where an enemy ship is with their new technology. I...don't like that. Its a dumb nitpick but it bothers me.

I think it would have been better if, like you say, they were able to find the Resistance by tracking Finn. I also had an idea where Holdo was actually a spy or something. She leads them into a trap and Leia is captured by the First Order, so they can interrogate her about Luke's location. Poe , Finn, and others survive the ambush but now have to launch a rescue mission to save Leia, who is being held captive on Snoke's ship. Maybe they can go to the casino planet to find someone that can sneak them onto Snoke's ship? Maybe they can meet up with Luke and Rey to do the rescue?

Your idea works too. The First Order ambushes them because they know Finn's location, and the characters later figure this out and some blame Finn and even think he's a spy. Maybe Finn feels personally responsible and guilty, and goes off alone to rescue Leia in a suicidal mission, and Poe has to stop him.

It would've been nice if Last Jedi had, y'know, an exciting story and plot. Something classicly Star Wars-y and Flash Gordon-y, while also having characters going through trials and tribulations and doubting themselves and fighting amongst themselves and learning things and doing things. :)

The way some characters are shown and some of the cuts while they're talking about it made me think the blond resistance officer that had a couple of lines towards the end was feeding the first order their jump coordinates or something.

Agreed. Like if they looked at the ship's records and it was just some dude that gambles and has a lot of money and not an arms dealer sure but Lando, even in the years that had gone by, that's a huge stretch. Snoke should have been a woman, and should have been an old lover of Luke's from years back. And i know a lot of people hate the EU but one thing i do like in the EU is the concept of the Dathomir witches. I like the idea of there being different folks who use the Force in different ways and who aren't Jedi or Sith, and who are completely disconnected from those guys. So Snoke (who has a different name in my dumb fanfic version of these movies) is a Dathomir sorceress who Luke had met after Episode 6 and they were lovers, but they had a falling out and maybe he ended up leaving her, so now she hates him but still loves him. So in the ensuing years, she came to hate him so much that she came upon the fledgling remnants of the Empire and started using her magic to exert influence over them. Like, maybe these generals and commanders and admirals were desperate for help, they were on the run from the forces of the New Republic and their allies, and they came upon her and she offered to use her magic to help them win battles. Like, maybe she had some sort of clairvoyance or some poo poo that she used to tell them how best to strike at the New Republic. And with her guiding them, they started winning battles. They coalesced around her and she became their Supreme Leader. The First Order is born.

When Luke disappears, she's desperate to find him because she wants to get with him again, and she still cares for him and may be genuinely worried about him.

This is dumb fanfic and i expect to be ridiculed for it, but i like it. I want Luke to have had himself a girlfriend back in the day, and i like that she's motivated by obsession and love, like she loves him too much and is possessive. And you can have an interesting conflict where the actual Neo-Imperial officers who serve her are actual True Believers; they want to actually resurrect the Empire, whereas she's just using it as a means to an end. And maybe she and Luke had a kid and its Kylo Ren, who Luke was training and raising but she manipulated him into turning against his father. And Kylo Ren wants to find Luke so he can loving kill him and she's like "Oh poo poo, stahp" but she can't stop him. So this causes her to actually reach out to the heroes.

Or...she was the one that actually captured Luke and is holding him prisoner, secretly. But she has to keep him a secret because her servants and minions want to kill him. Episode 7 starts out with everyone wondering where Luke is, right? And the climax can involve Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia, Han, etc. discovering this, along with Kylo, which causes him to go apeshit and stage a coup on his own mother. The heroes help Snoke (again, different name) escape with Luke, though Han dies during this. Kylo is now the new Supreme Leader. No Starkiller Base. Luke, Leia, and Han are all on screen together and reunite, even if only for a short while before Han sacrifices himself to save them.

Came from my brain.

I should note that in this fanfic version, Snoke would look totally different. They would be a human female and played by an actress, and be about Luke's age. And her magic would involve clairvoyance, scrying, and possibly necromancy. Maybe she foolishly uses her magic to resurrect the spirit of an ancient Sith lord. :)

I would also have Sith mummies in these movies. The Sith were all about mummification techniques, and many ancient Sith lords had themselves mummified, along with spells and rituals to resurrect and rejuvenate them so that they could live again. Snoke got herself one of these and has used her magic to partially resurrect it but keep it enslaved. But Kylo Ren's coup causes her to lose control of it, and now he's "free". He becomes the main bad guy and takes over the First Order, with Kylo Ren as his acolyte. Maybe Kylo Ren was learning from him before, as his mother forced the mummy to instruct him. The rest of the trilogy involves the heroes taking down this big bad mummy and his attempts to resurrect not the Galactic Empire...but the SITH Empire!!! Kylo Ren goes along with this because he wants to be like his grandfather, Darth Vader, who was a Sith Lord. Luke reaches out to him and reconciles with him and he rejects the teachings of the Sith. The Sith mummy turns to dust and is dead forever by the end of Episode 9. Luke dies to save his son. Leia dies sometime during these movies, too. Or maybe she outlives him. The final film ends with C-3PO and R2-D2 remarking about how crazy all this poo poo has been.

I loved that in TLJ, a lot of the characters act stupid. It reminded me of the less talented people in Legend of Galactic Heroes.

Finn and Rose loving suck at their job. Poe starts out good at his specific job but he’s ridiculously shortsighted. “We killed a dreadnought!” he cheers, even though the First Order probably has like 500 of them. Hucks just sits there letting the dreadnought fend for itself instead of retreating it so the other star destroyers can fight. Holdo hides her plan for absolutely no good reason, but it is a good plan. It even works, based on Hucks’ own stupidity.

I’ve met dozens of people in real life who are stupid in the exact same way. It feels more real.

And then you get flashes of intelligence. Holdo ramming. Rey leaving when she realizes Luke won’t pick up the lightsaber. Yoda burning the tree so Luke dives in trying to save the books, showing the instinctively he still cares. Kylo is still kind of stupid but that poor boy is trying to change. BB8 and Benicio Del Toro are competent for pretty much the whole movie, except the dumb trash can disguise. A disguise that I think would’ve work in ANY of the other Star Wars movies.
