Honestly was too frustrated to sit through the miniseries, the acting was way too wooden. Except for Paul who instead whines and whines and whines like a spoiled poo poo. That and the special effect are horrendous. Not that I expect much from low budget shows the sandworms look awful and I can look past that, but when they cut to one of Arrakis' moons and it's literally just a photo of the earths moon tinted yellow, you know you've got something special. Children of Dune miniseries was a lot better to be sure.

Paul barely speaks in the book until he's in the desert and the exposure to the spice is causing him to have prescient visions and all of a sudden he's loving furious at his mother and ranting about the bene gesserit and the missionaria protectiva and the fact that he's choosing to take a path he's seeing forward guaranteed by the bene gesserit despite the harm that's coming to the universe as a result. in messiah he's basically bored with life and going through the motions, feeling chained to his prescient vision. in children he's trolling his sister and causing a ruckus. side note, i realized today reading Heretics Of Dune that way back at the end of Messiah, Paul doesn't see Leto in his visions. Leto can't be seen in prescient viewer's minds. Even though it goes unsaid, his reign and breeding program was all to recreate that circumstance in all of humankind.

To be fair, he was a product of insane breeding schemes, probably felt a bit bitter they intended to use him as a pawn in some big political game, hated the fact his grandpappy was a floating fat hedonistic sadist. He was also seeing all the dangers and schemes fall into place that the bene gesserit were behind. The BG isn't really a protagonist until Heretics, even though they're not really antagonists either.

Yeah I actually liked that part of the book, where he just flips out on Jessica and beats her at the BG's own "inferring all kinds of poo poo from microexpressions" game and tells her he can see she's pregnant. Also, I may be misremembering, but at that point Herbert describes him as just seeing every little detail with total clarity, like when he was piloting their 'thopter through that sandstorm after they escape. It seemed like at that point in the series, prescience was a kind of ability to forecast the future from having an incredibly clear and detailed understanding of the present, and eventually it morphs into straight-up 'magic ability to see the future' in the later books and especially with Leto II.

It starts awakening as an extension of mentat-esque process of just observing data and drawing conclusions, yeah, but as he is increasingly exposed to spice and eventually undergoes the agony, it's magical at that point, and he sees things yet to happen. his initial dreams pre-awakening dont fit that mentat-mold either.

Oh yeah, that reminds me that throughout Messiah he only saw a daughter and was surprised at the end when he had twins. I thought that was a nice little bit of foreshadowing that his son would be prescient and thus also shielded from Paul's prescience.

Not seeing leto was foreshadowing of what leto would do with the BG breeding program and his need to merge atreides genes into the general populace.

True but I thought they decided that only Leto would go through the spice agony/water of life thing and that he didn't have the full-blown prescience before that?

Leto didn't want the water of life, he was kidnapped by his grandma and gurney halleck + an insane rebel fremen force fed him huge amounts of spice essence over a long period of time and waited for him to either submit to bene gesserit training and control or to show signs of abomination

The male prescient supersedes the female, like how Jessica and all the reverend mothers can interact with the female memories, but the men are inscrutable. At least that's how I interpret it. Men can sense men and women but women are limited in their memories. Or it is simply a plot device.

The tyrant may have not been able to see large swaths of humanity due to Siona, but he could usually trace his golden path via Idaho. .... I really like Idaho's name. It shows how our words have ancient meanings now divorced from them. The Idaho river is named after the Idaho mountain it once cut through. The mountain was named after the hero Duncan Idaho. He was named for whatever, which was named for the ancient state, which was named for a tribe of native Americans, which was named for-

Idaho had different exact meanings throughout the ages, which all shared themes: power, dignity, and a great taste. Like how 'sal' became 'salary' and then 'soldier', or how Arrakeen became Onn, and then Keen. The features changed, but the streets laid like ancient bones, defining the shape of the city. I love it. It makes me feel like I could grab a hold of any idea in the real world, and follow it's thread all the way back to the beginning of time, when the house of atreus was founded by a literal person who would become tantalus.
