Just wanted to let you guys know.

Dead soldiers don't lose the game, just panicked countries. So even a total mission wipe is recoverable, usually. A lot of grognards got their "perfect continent deployment schedule" down pat, which is probably why in XCOM 2, the continental bonuses are randomized, heh.

Same. Instant autopsies are nice, and instant interrogations pay for themselves since they cut the cost of other techs in half. Fortunately even if you don't get South America first it's easy to cover since it only has two slots.

over in XCOM2:WotC, I love the inspiration and breakthrough system. They screw with optimization in a good way, so no game ever runs quite the same.

Motherfucker, I'm getting a crash upon loading to the Avenger for this guerilla op I completed. Out of suspicion, I used the console cheat to check for other possibilities: replay the map, and play another mission. Both CTDs.

What on earth could be the loving problem now?

EDIT: Tried deleting Avenger.root to see how it would respond, naturally causes loading loop so it's not the file that's hosed. Low graphics, nada. Mods apart from vital ones, nada. Probably should try again tomorrow.

Super pissed about this, considering I just got mag weapons AND the +1 damage breakthrough. loving XCOM.

FINAL: gently caress everything, there goes another promising campaign. Had the instant supplies continental bonus and everything, plus faster will recovery and experience gain from Templars. Was a fantastic start, even if my Reaper orders were all pretty poo poo. Remind me to keep like 10 loving savegames or whatever so I don't have to go through this poo poo again.

And what should one do to be remembered?
So I installed the game, subscribed to the QoL mods recommended in the OP... and the mods don't appear on the launcher. It's been a couple of days and no dice. What gives? I appear subscribed to all of them on Steam, even, and a couple of them used to appear on my old PC so it's not like it never worked.

Do you have WotC?

Did the mods you subscribe to have WotC as a pre-requisite?

Did you pick WotC in the launchers?

Those are usually the things that trip people up.

I never played the original xcoms so didn't have the nostalgia pull going into EU, and found it decent but wasn't blown away or anything. I just started 2 with the expansion and I love it. Pretty much every change they made makes it a way better game. But anyway, I'm trying to understand bleed out mechanics.

1. People bleeding out can only be stabilized by a specialist, it consumes their medpack-type ability even though it's a separate ability ("stabilize"). Then they are 'unconscious' and need to be carried to an evac point by another soldier.
2. If you leave them bleeding out as the map ends, they just die? I think.
3. If they are bleeding out and you don't have a specialist (cuz he's the poor fucker bleeding out), you SHOULD be able to carry them to an evac point with someone else and then evac the guy carrying them and they should be fine albeit gravely wounded, right??? I swear I did this before, but I was playing a game this morning and I could not pick up a bleeding out guy at all with a non-specialist.

I think it works decently on PS4. Although I had to reinstall because something got corrupted and I was getting something that was probably a memory leak, I wanted to wait, but then it crashed so hard it deleted my save when I was on the victory lap :negative:

Yeah you should be able to carry them with anyone. The ragdoll is a little funky though and often lands their body in a weird tile that isn't where their body actually is. Look for a tile you can't path to and put your dude there to pick them up.

Also anyone with a medkit can stabilize, it isn't just specialists. Their Gremlin Heal perk just gives them a free medkit charge. This is more useful once you hit Predator armor and people have multiple equipment slots.

Bogart

You're right on some accounts. Anyone with a medkit can stabilize someone who's bleeding out, it's just that a specialist with the medical protocol can do it, too. From afar, I think, which is the main difference. Giving a medkit to a specialist just gives an extra charge. Stabilize, you can imagine, uses the same bits of the medlkit otherwise used for stitching someone together to instead keep their internal organs on the right sides of the body.

It depends on the mission type -- on an 'everyone evac!' mission, not bringing a downed soldier back with you will leave them behind. They're either KIA or MIA. A mission that ends with 'eliminate all hostiles' with a soldier bleeding out should be the same thing as them being evac'd; they'll make it out. If you couldn't pick up someone bleeding out, then probably the game just disagreed about the tile your bleeding-out soldier had landed on.

I told you so...
I feel bad for bringing up questions about the original game, but every other resource I can find has dried up long ago, so I thought this'd be the best place to ask:

It's happened twice now, when I complete a mission, I get the usual ship taking off cutscene, then get to the "fly over the globe" sequence, but the picture freezes. Nothing else stops; I can move the cursor, the ambient sounds keep going, but I can't progress. I can't minimize, I can't bring anything else to the front, not even the task manager, I think I can technically alt-tab, but whatever other window I select won't come to the front. I can get out by ctrl-alt-del and forcing a log off, but obviously I lose the progress I hadn't saved, which usually means a lot because the crash happens right after a mission and I tend not to save too much.

So far it's happened twice in about 15 hours. I don't remember much about the first time (because I was half mad, half glad because I could have a do-over and maybe not lose my sniper), but I know that the second time, it happened after I left a mission running for 4-5 hours while I had dinner and watched TV. I googled around and found some stories that sound a bit like mine, but nothing concrete.

It's a bit annoying because it's forcing me to save fairly often during missions, which makes it REALLY tempting to save-scum, something that I managed not to do too much before.

I mean this isn't going to be the best advice but maybe also don't leave the game running for 4-5 hours idle during a mission, I can't say a crash is surprising result. Does XCOM1 not do periodic autosaves as they do in WoTC? Wouldn't surprise me, but I also don't think it's too much to set a 'save every 5 turns' rule for yourself to adhere to. Better than replaying the mission from the beginning perhaps?

Also as a bit of advice: If you're gonna save scum, just fully accept that you're going to do it, or play Ironman. You'll feel better about the reloads, or stop being able to do them. Personally I gave up the ironman challenge (because I'm bad, and attached to my people).

Yeah, 2 crashes really isn't so bad, especially since I was kind of asking for one by having the game run for half a day on a single mission. Although that also kind of makes it 2 crashes in 10 hours... ;) I was asking more because if someone could say "yeah, it happens every time you take more than 3 hours to complete a single turn" I'd probably be less on edge at the end of every mission.

For the moment, I am saving more often, but it's making it really hard to not reload a save I made 2 turns ago when a dude I like gets critical'd in the head.

Still, love the game, and I still have EW to go through after. Maybe I could get the thread back on track and ask: I know the turn timer was a contested design choice when the game came out, so when I play EU, I try to imagine how I'd play if I had limited turns, and I think I'd lose a shitload more guys. Is XCOM 2 balanced differently to account that I'll have a lot more guys dashing to the front?

I'm really curious because I'm pretty sure I'll want to keep playing after EU/EW...

Edit: Oh, yeah, just wanted to share: I started a new game because I felt like the tutorials kind of messed things up for me and I kind of wasted a lot of experience on guys just to experiment with skills. Before I decided on a new game, I was hoping for a second sniper, ideally Canadian, but kept rolling Support (or getting rookies killed). After the very first mission of my new game, I got my Canadian sniper. Awesome!
