Chaoshan Girl was complaining to me tonight that she met one of her friends for dinner and the woman's husband and their friend were there and making the dinner go on forever. I had met this couple when I was in SZ and they were polite to me, but apparently the woman tried to whiteknight to CG about how evil foreigners are and how I'll never ever take care of her with my money. She said she knew a guy that was single and desperate. CG told her she doesn't want any of that and our "friendship" is more than enough for her and her schedule. The woman was very offended that CG would not immediately jump at the chance to go out on a date with a random lonely guy. What stood out to me about the couple was how young I felt in their presence. I wondered how CG made friends with people so old. They were both chain smoking while I was there, and it seemed like there should be some grandchildren running around unsupervised. I recently found out they are both like five years younger than me. Anyway, the point of this ramble: CG told me she found out they were up to no good. They were at the dinner table tonight openly talking about how they are making their riches. They got into the counterfeit product business. China has those funny laws about copying poo poo. You can make some trash product with NIKE on it and get busted if the police didn't get their bribes, but you could copy everything about an iPhone and name your company Appor and be ok. These people are selling fakes of all Western brands on Taobao as legit, and somehow haven't been busted yet. They also sell wholesale to other people, again saying they are genuine products. It's really bad for the buyers as it can ruin their reputations to sell fake products, as well as be a waste of their money. The other scam was selling fake USB cables to Hong Kong. Like, "Genuine" popular brand cables made for 1 RMB in some Chaoshan factory and then sold for 80 HKD or something. They sold so much that they said many HK sellers were selling them back to Mainlanders on Taobao just because they come from HK so they absolutely must be real! That follows the typical Mainland idea of everything from HK being legit, even though it's all just made in China. Anyway, CG was worried they might not be able to afford the bribe if they get caught. They could get a few years in jail and not be able to afford a replacement. I asked what that meant, and she said that it's normal for people to bribe the police and then find a poor person who needs something, or whose parents are sick or whatever, and pay them what they need and then have that person take their place in jail for them. This must be the origin of the "temporary worker" scapegoat. Then she told me that if a rich guy is condemned to death then all he has to do is bribe the police enough that at the last minute they'll execute some other prisoner in his place and then he can live under an assumed ID number of another dead person. She said this was pretty normal, at least enough that many people know it happens. Also: quote:It is truth. My finance girl knew this. She is an accountant. Some company make fake document for fake tax.

Bajaj posted:The weirdest part to me is that even though men with thinning hair is normal, you don't really see or notice it on men at the ages these girls/women are doing their balding. Like, a 20-year-old girl should not be balding, but they are, and their boyfriends aren't (though Mainland men have their own set of issues). It could be a variety of reasons, and it seems to affect them off and on. Chaoshan Girl has twice gone through "normal head of hair into thinning hair" phases since I've met her. I had one while I was in China last time, it lasted about two months and I have no clue what caused it. My hair was falling out like mad and even the photos at the time showed that my hair was thinning in the front. Then it went away as mysteriously as it began. haier there's finally some proof of your observations https://twitter.com/SCMP_News/status/950268377263722502

there are definitely a lot of women in the mainland who are balding. some of them are really young, like mid-20s young. I noticed this with a girl or two I went out with in like 2012 and 2013. I think it's the water mixed with malnutrition mixed with...uh, idk. I haven't thought long enough about it to develop a theory

Presumably for the same reason white people do: because they find the entire rest of their lives boring and unfulfilling and it's a nice push-button dopamine hit. With the added bonus of some novelty to cut through the all-consuming ennui, for a little while.
