Chaoshan Girl was complaining to me tonight that she met one of her friends for dinner and the woman's husband and their friend were there and making the dinner go on forever. I had met this couple when I was in SZ and they were polite to me, but apparently the woman tried to whiteknight to CG about how evil foreigners are and how I'll never ever take care of her with my money. She said she knew a guy that was single and desperate. CG told her she doesn't want any of that and our "friendship" is more than enough for her and her schedule. The woman was very offended that CG would not immediately jump at the chance to go out on a date with a random lonely guy.
What stood out to me about the couple was how young I felt in their presence. I wondered how CG made friends with people so old. They were both chain smoking while I was there, and it seemed like there should be some grandchildren running around unsupervised. I recently found out they are both like five years younger than me.

Anyway, the point of this ramble:

CG told me she found out they were up to no good. They were at the dinner table tonight openly talking about how they are making their riches. They got into the counterfeit product business. China has those funny laws about copying poo poo. You can make some trash product with NIKE on it and get busted if the police didn't get their bribes, but you could copy everything about an iPhone and name your company Appor and be ok. These people are selling fakes of all Western brands on Taobao as legit, and somehow haven't been busted yet. They also sell wholesale to other people, again saying they are genuine products. It's really bad for the buyers as it can ruin their reputations to sell fake products, as well as be a waste of their money.

The other scam was selling fake USB cables to Hong Kong. Like, "Genuine" popular brand cables made for 1 RMB in some Chaoshan factory and then sold for 80 HKD or something. They sold so much that they said many HK sellers were selling them back to Mainlanders on Taobao just because they come from HK so they absolutely must be real! That follows the typical Mainland idea of everything from HK being legit, even though it's all just made in China.

Anyway, CG was worried they might not be able to afford the bribe if they get caught. They could get a few years in jail and not be able to afford a replacement. I asked what that meant, and she said that it's normal for people to bribe the police and then find a poor person who needs something, or whose parents are sick or whatever, and pay them what they need and then have that person take their place in jail for them. This must be the origin of the "temporary worker" scapegoat.

Then she told me that if a rich guy is condemned to death then all he has to do is bribe the police enough that at the last minute they'll execute some other prisoner in his place and then he can live under an assumed ID number of another dead person. She said this was pretty normal, at least enough that many people know it happens.

They got the tax.

The weirdest part to me is that even though men with thinning hair is normal, you don't really see or notice it on men at the ages these girls/women are doing their balding. Like, a 20-year-old girl should not be balding, but they are, and their boyfriends aren't (though Mainland men have their own set of issues). It could be a variety of reasons, and it seems to affect them off and on. Chaoshan Girl has twice gone through "normal head of hair into thinning hair" phases since I've met her. I had one while I was in China last time, it lasted about two months and I have no clue what caused it. My hair was falling out like mad and even the photos at the time showed that my hair was thinning in the front. Then it went away as mysteriously as it began.

I always just assumed it was life-long malnutrition combined with the rampant hormone fluctuations caused by unregulated industrial chemicals in everything. I ask every single person I know that goes those body checks for work that many jobs require, and they all say the the report says they are low in iron and/or have anemia.

My favorite is when I point out that a woman is balding or her hair is thinning, the response is always "everyone has that, she is not balding. It is normal!"

This is a month old, but my dad was talking about this with me recently. India is in a similar boat.

http://www.businessinsider.com/imf-report-china-debt-risk-global-financial-system-2017-12

quote:

"Credit growth has outpaced GDP growth, leading to a large credit overhang. The credit-to-GDP ratio is now about 25% above the long-term trend, very high by international standards and consistent with a high probability of financial distress.

"As a result, corporate debt has reached 165% of GDP, and household debt, while still low, has risen by 15 percentage points of GDP over the past five years and is increasingly linked to asset-price speculation. The buildup of credit in traditional sectors has gone hand-in-hand with a slowdown of productivity growth and pressures on asset quality.”

These issues have led to what the IMF described as "tensions" in three areas of the Chinese financial sector.

First, the report says: "Monetary and fiscal policies aimed at supporting employment and growth have, in recent years, been expansionary."

This has led to a situation in which failing companies are kept afloat, thanks to incentives for local governments to do so. The report notes that this is a negative in terms of financial stability.

"As a result, the credit needed to generate additional GDP growth has led to a substantial credit expansion resulting in high corporate debt and household indebtedness rising at a fast pace, albeit from a low base," an IMF statement says.

The second area of tension, the IMF says, is the fact that Chinese investors are looking to increasingly complex means of getting high yields on their investments, which has led to "regulatory arbitrage and the growth of increasingly complex investment vehicles."

"Risky lending has thus moved away from banks toward the less-well supervised parts of the financial system." These areas of lending have grown even faster than the rapidly growing banking sector.

The IMF's third area for concern is that "widespread implicit guarantees have added to these risks."

The fund said that Chinese financial institutions are seemingly unwilling to allow investors to lose money and that this has created an environment where investors are simply taking more and more risk, lacking the fear that they'll ever actually see a downside.

Here's the IMF one last time:

"A reluctance among financial institutions to allow retail investors to take losses; the expectation that the government stands behind debt issued by state-owned enterprises and local government financing vehicles; efforts to stabilize stock and bond markets in times of volatility; and protection funds for various financial institutions, have all contributed to moral hazard and excessive risk-taking."

Number one way for a woman in China to "keep slim" is to starve herself. Who knew it would lead to their bodies being deplete in everything for years/decades, especially during their most important mental and physical growth periods? LMAO.
