SpaceGoku posted:wasn't damore fired for repeatedly harassing female employees and lying on his resume harassing? well, kinda. the memo is basically him going full on about how men are logical and rational and should be programmers while women aren't logical and rational and shouldn't be programmers, only he never directly says those words which lets disingenuous assholes claim this isn't what he was saying. but the end result is he basically told all the women engineers in the company that he doesn't think they should be employed there and that kind of pissed everyone off. one giant fuckoff red flag in the memo is how he utterly and completely dismisses "soft skills" like interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, which are hands down the most valuable things you need when working on teams of any type. in some newspaper interview or another it's revealed that he's on the spectrum and it explains a hell of a lot about both his attitude and his inability to understand why simply "telling the truth" like he did angered people. at the same time he says he's not a conservative but he got really, really upset at intranet social networking discussions that were pro nazi-punching (which is suddenly conservative ) and anti-patriarchy stuff. most of the interesting bits of the suit have been posted via twitter but it's really worth a skim to get an understanding of 1) how completely out of touch this rear end in a top hat is with the scope and impact of his actions, 2) how far he's fallen into alt-right talking points (some have floated that this lawsuit will be used as a model by white cishet males upset at being fired for objecting about being around people that aren't white cishet males), and 3) how entirely inconsistent and inept Google HR is at this poo poo. fake edit: whoa thunk is really big

lol that conservatwitter realised "he's right. women aren't suited to being in tech" didn't fly the first time around, so now the talking point is "he didn't say women aren't a good fit for tech, he said that you shouldn't judge individual people based on statistical trends" https://twitter.com/ulf_wiger/status/950457203303084033?s=17 except oh oops. https://twitter.com/luchagato/status/950492656970485760?s=17 Bonus: his thesis is extremely clear and specific, but, at the same time, you need to be a master brainer to understand it https://twitter.com/literacyisgood/status/950529914477862912?s=17

also relevant to the current discussion I do pretty clearly remember one of Dilbro's books whining that he could never get ahead in the corporate world because he was white and male, then proceeds to spend several chapters talking about how terrible of an employee he was and how he spent most of his time pretending to work kinda sums all these dudes up in a nutshell doesn't it

Sometimes I think introducing the world to the concept of 'white privilege' has backfired given it gave a lot of disaffected white guys ideas, usually variations on 'White men are supposed to be handed success and power on a silver platter, so where's mine?!'

the real truth: white privilege was always a dumb idea, the issue wraps around and has always wrapped around to one of class, it's just that race also factors into what class you're in. poor black people are treated as an exploitable underclass, then homeless, then poor whites, then suburbanites, then rich people pointing out how most/all suburbanites + rich are white, and ipso facto poor whites are in the same group as them (and benefit from the same advantages), was always really loving stupid, and a great way to drive more reactionary resentment poo poo, because social mobility is mostly a myth anyway, so you're not speaking to their actual experience
