I bet that isn't the first time he exaggerated growth by over 7 cm. The OSHA part is that if this were true, he might have became too tall to fit in the Soyuz to return to earth, and would've been stuck in space.

A truck carrying ammonia nitrate crashed on the Great Northern Highway in Australia causing the highway to be closed down and an exclusion zone around the area to be established while cleanup occurs and the North West Coastal Highway is also closed due to a collision between a LNG tanker and another truck. But don't worry, the alternate route is still wide open! Might take a little longer though .... http://www.pilbaranews.com.au/?news/regional/highways-closed-after-multiple-truck-crashes-ng-b88709474z Pretty much most of the land visible on that map has no measurable population (most of it just comes up blank on maps showing population) so there's not a whole lot of good roads over on the western side of the continent.

They were also terrified of doing anything that could lead to them being a target, so when they came across a severely wounded Coach Sanders they intentionally left him to bleed to death to evacuate everyone else in the room, and refused to allow any of the uninjured survivors to carry him out or provide medical attention. They also knew about Harris and Klebold and even had warrants that they didn't act on for years before the shooting, and after the shooting occurred the local police destroyed documents and covered up any knowledge they had to avoid admitting that they hosed up!

Crossposting from the Schadenfreude thread: Atomic Accidents had a great chapter about train crashes as a spectator event (More OSHA than schad): Atomic Accidents posted:"A steam explosion could happen at any time, out of the blue, without a hint of warning. A boiler would disintegrate, sending hot, knife-like pieces ripping mercilessly through a crowd. It was not the sort of publicity that a railroad ever needed. “ Naw,” said Bill, patting the still-sticky paint. “These old engines are tough. It’s just going to make a big noise and crush it like a tomato can. No blow-up. I’m sure.” Of all the employees in the Katy, Bill Crush probably knew the least about steam and mechanical stress. The afternoon was getting hot, and the crowd was growing restless. Two hundred men were hired to control the mob, but it was beginning to get out of hand. The two engineers were ready at the throttles, the boilers were redlined, and the steam relief valves had sprung open and were blowing mist. Crush rode out in front of the crowd on a borrowed white horse, raised his hat high, let it hang for a moment, then dropped it. The crowd went wild, and the engineers jerked their throttles full open. C. E. Stanton in the green engine and Charles Cain in the red one coolly waited for 12 puffs from the cylinders and bailed out, with the lightly loaded engines gaining speed. People pushed and shoved for an unobstructed view. On they came, blowing dark clouds of smoke and setting off emergency signal torpedoes placed all along the track. Bang. Bang. Bang bang bang. Faster and faster, reaching a combined collision speed of 100 miles per hour. The official event photographer, J. C. Deane, tripped his high-speed shutter just as the two cowcatchers met. The two old engines, weighing about 35 tons each, suddenly occupied the same spot on the track. There was a terrific sound of crashing, bending metal as the two locomotives melted together, lifted their front trucks off the track, and seemed to hang for an instant. The wooden cars behind splintered and crushed as the two trains telescoped together."

And, of course, the first cops on the scene did nothing. They were reading from the hostage negotiation playbook while there was a massacre going on. SWAT didn't even enter the school until almost an hour after the shooters killed themselves.

Farmdizzle posted:Also in re: moving water, I was taught the following: Understanding a river is critical. There's a chute on the Little Fork river in northern MN just west of Greaney MN. Placid waters before, placid after. If the water is low, feel free to swim below the falls. The drop is only a foot or so. If the water is high, don't even dip your toe. It looks like nothing, but it will chew you up and spit you out 100 yards downstream dead as a doornail. With low water, you can play with the current. There's a nice swimming hole there. If you get caught in it though, you're heading down river fast. Many rocks there to kick your rear end if you get tumbled.

Because the incident caused several deaths and countless other injuries the guy who had organised it was immediately fired but weirdly enough there was hardly any negative press so the railroad hired him back the next day. In fact it proved so popular that similar staged crashes were held in other parts of the country. Here's the aftermath of a crash in Buckeye Park, Ohio:

A lot of changes came around because of that, standard procedure was that responding officers secured outside and swat made entry and cleared. It obviously varies from department to department but generally officers make entry in teams of 3 and there is a lot of active shooter specific training that occurs now.

Everyone I know that was taught that way can't swim for poo poo and have a fear of water. I went to swimming lessons as a kid and they had us jump straight into the deep end. Arms crossed and legs together. I went down 10 feet and had to struggle to get to the surface. Irefused to ever take any more lessons. I didn't learn to swim until high-school because of it.

It's water, but highly acidic acid. One persons body dissolved before it could be fished out.

My other favorite was watching a lady take off her sandal and dip her foot into a pool of boiling sulfur mud.

Death in yellowstone is a good book on the subject. Fun fact, more people have drowned/died of hypothermia due to the cold lake yellowstone than have died in hot springs, but the stories of people in the hot springs are the worst. And the sweedish lady who got eaten by a bear camping alone.

Yellowstone Lake blows my mind bc in the wintertime it will be frozen solid at the surface, with ice ten feet thick, but due to geothermal activity it gets hotter and hotter as you descend until you reach some underwater fumaroles where, due to the pressure, the water comes out at 120 celsius. It's both boiling and freezing at the same time.
