I'm telling you, run straight to the bottom of the catacombs, get two bonewheel shields before you even level up, and then go back and play the entire game with just them. Also, wear the armor of thorns for maximum spikiness. You can't even two hand them properly until you're about twenty so that makes getting to the gargoyles fun.
