Would love to have a Jazzmaster, but Fender doesn't give a gently caress about lefty players.
That said, I'm considering ordering a G&L Doheny. You can seemingly order G&L's custom w/o a huge upcharge.
This is a mockup of what I want:

There already tons of lefty Doheny's out there, but just none like this (yet.)

I love loving around with that thing. Currently have it strung as a Bass VI and running through a stereo pedal to a bass and guitar amp.

I’m a horrifying player, but drat I love making stupid noise with that thing. I don’t know why nobody with the Lemmy/Barlow bass style don’t use 6 strings more often.

The again there was that huge dude in Grooms that plays a full-sized (or possibly 36”) 6 string bass and switched between playing rhythm guitar on the 12th fret and up with a pick and plucking bass when required. Usually this would be a verse/chorus thing but sometimes within the same measure.

I liked that show.

Welp, I just pulled the trigger on this. They are estimating 8-10 weeks for delivery.
Went w/the following options:
Transparent Orange Finish on LH swamp ash body
Standard satin finish maple neck
Rosewood fretboard w/mother of pearl block inlays
Locking tuners
3 ply tortoiseshell pickguard
Graphtech nut

Very reasonable pricing for a custom guitar. (well under $2k)

The bass player of my first band had a Bass VI-clone. Since we originally started as a 3-piece, he also often did 3-fingered chords on his 4 and 5 string basses as well. His favorite chords was doing a diminished seventh, usually coming from either a full-on Power Chord or a Diminished Ninth. It often made it sound like we had 2 guitar players and a bass player.

I was going to buy another goon's bass, but my wife reminded me that I really should get another 5 string before I get another 4 string. (Sorry Minto!)

The day after having that conversation, this guy popped up on a local Facebook musician page, and welp.

From the neck plate serial, I can tell it was made between 1992 and 1997 or so. When I pull the neck to shim it a little bit, I should be able to get a much more specific date of manufacture from inside the pocket.

RG655 in Galaxy Black. Found a mint condition one for sale for around half the price of a new one. Always been wanting a really nice shred Ibanez, and was waffling between a newer Indonesian Jem, a Universe and some others when this came along. Super thin neck, Edge tremolo, and DiMarzio pickups. It should rock. Will be replacing a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR in the collection.

Yessss.
That is the configuration of Ibanez RG-style (although to be honest I wish very much I could get those same H/S/H guitars with a hard-tail bridge because I am really tired of locking trems) that sustains me and forms the cornerstone of my instrument preference. Of course, the stock pickups almost always have to go, but the 5-way wiring gives you so many great tones, and the ergonomics are so spot-on: this is the ideal instrument for me. The only questions I'd have upon first use are along these lines: a) How well does the guitar retain treble when the volume knob ia rolled back for a glassy, bright clean tone? b) does either or both humbucker benefit from being run in parallel (in which case I will install a push-pull pot for that), and how's the neck? Are the frets level, can I get really nice low action on it? How is it acoustically? Is it bright and loud or muddy and weak? That's how I know if I've got a "keeper."

That's a great finish and the neck looks fantastic. I hope you'll have some nice pickups installed later, and maybe a certain value of capacitor if necessary to retain those glassy highs when rolled-off to clean, after you're sure the fit is good. I'm crazy for those guitars. :swoon:

Maybe it's just the few I have (and take into account I changed the pickup in the RG and probably hosed it) but all three of my Ibaneezers have what are probably best described as binary volume knobs. They go 0 then 8-10. For reference, the aforementioned RG1570 with me putting in an Invader, and stock S540 and GRG7221.

Extremely grim and evil.
Could be you have linear taper pots instead of logarithmic taper, I see logarithmic taper pots recommended for volume knobs for that exact reason.

Yeah taper is weird, if you have the wrong taper it can do that.

I did once have a megaohm tone pot for the g&l tone circuit that was actually kinda hosed somewhat and was literally all or none though so that's also a possibility but you can't really tell without busting out the multimeter

You can take a look at the RG8571 or RG1451 which are very similar models except with a hardtail bridge.

As for the pickups, I intend to keep them on this one; big fan of this particular mix of DiMarzios. Most of the RGs have weak pickups, but this one's equipped with Air Norton, True Velvet and Tone Zone which I love. :)

Air Norton remains one of my favorite neck humbuckers I've ever used. It's probably still good on the bridge too.

Spot on!
I don't like the TZ as much because of the sorta artificial way it adds pick-attack, but it's a great pickup. I own more than one Blue Velvet/True Velvet and love them to death, and the Air Norton is great. I thought you had a guitar loaded with like PAF Pros and some weak, noisy single. Goonspeed, that's a great load-out for that axe.

that's kinda closer to what they were designed for, pushing the relatively lower gain amps of the late 70s/early 80s or anything set somewhat clean

same with the old bill lawrence rail pickups, duncan invader etc. that's the sound of early thrash as well

Ibanez 2354LB, a lawsuit-era copy of a Gibson EB-3L with slotted headstock. Unlike the Gibson this has a bolt on neck, and the scale may be different (33.5 on this, 34.5 on the real thing). $100 with case, but has some issues which I'll complain about in the bass thread.

I bought a Boss OS-2, CH-1, and RV-6 to hook up to my Korg Minilogue Synth and TR-8 Drum Machine and am having a loving blast. The OS-2 sounds incredible on 808 Kicks/Snares and the Chorus/Reverb really helps widen out the Mini.

Now that I have severe pedalitis, I was thinking a fuzz would work really well with the Minilogue and was wondering if anyone had any feedback on using a fuzz with a synth.

Yes: using fuzzes with synths is cool and good. The Smallsound/Bigsound Buzzzz is currently the king of dope fuzzes, but that is a silly thing to say because there is no "best" only "bests." I have a pedal called the Jext Telez White that's an interpretation of the old Vox solid state amp fuzz circuits from the 60s and it has this cool notch filter inductor that would probably be super useful for sculpting basslines on a synth.

muffs work best on synths, fuzz faces are great, octavias are mostly good but might not be what you're looking for

tonebender, maestro, super fuzz aren't great since they tend to cut a lot of the good parts of what a synth is putting out, but boutique versions usually do a lot of fix those issues

for a first synth fuzz you really can't go wrong with a muff though

Thanks for the feedback guys! Think I’m going to go for a muff based on the recommendations. Is there one in particular that I should grab around the $100 range? I think if there is such a thing I would want one that had decent low end presence since I think bass lines on the Mini would really benefit from it.

I would check out the new EHX Russian Big Muff reissue. $80 new and keeps the lows a bit better than the bog standard one. That or the bass big muff. I switch between running my minilogue and sub 37 into the bass big muff, but I think it’s going to be a permanent sub 37 pedal. Sounds so good.

The bass big muff can be used in dry mode - it keeps the dry signal intact and you can blend in the fuzz. They are only like 80 bucks new, so pretty cheap. You can probably find a used one for 50.

the russian big muff is a solid choice, op amp or bass would be other good ones, either of the cheep tc ones (honeypot is muff, rusty is fuzz face), caracosa is on the high end of your price bracket but would be good, and also look at a rat even though it's thought of more as distortion.

OK, I know I am gambling a bit on this one, but the handful of people who have actually gotten their hands on one seem to think it's a damned nice piece of gear for the money.

It's the "Harley Djenton", 6 string fanned fret "baritone" (25.5" - 27" scale). It's so loving cheap, and comes with locking tuners, graphite nut, and their own pickups for the 2018 models seem massively improved. At < 300 freedom dollars I couldn't NOT buy it. Should be here next week.

I ended up going with the EHX Bass Big Muff and ho-lee poo poo. This is exactly what I needed to thicken up my Minilogue Basslines. The thing I am most impressed with so far is how far you can push this thing and it still sounds crisp.

This is super late, but I wanted to introduce my newest guitar. PRS SE Custom 24 in Trampas Green. Her name, bestowed upon her by my daughter, is Sophie. It's okay, you can say hello. :)

I was finally able to get my hands on a Stringjoy 10-48 pack to do a proper setup. At first, I was in denial, but after a few days of playing with her, I can tell you with confidence that she plays better than any of my standard scale guitars. Yes, that includes the Larrivée. The weight and ease of playing reminds me of my long-departed Eclipses, but better.

My only complaint is that the 3-way pickup selector is a bit stiffer than what I expected, but other than that yeah: Best standard scale guitar ever.

Also, after playing this, I started considering saving for a Maryland-made one, and I don't know if to consider that awesome, or horrifying. :ohdear:
