I've always been sort of mixed on specifically bringing up MLK Jr's socialism in contexts like this. On one hand it feels sorta questionable to effectively use his legacy to push your political views, but on the other hand it really is kind of messed up that so many people distort and misunderstand who he was.

Using someone's legacy to push their political views is a good thing. You probably wouldn't be doing it if you didn't share his views, as we can see from all the people who conveniently ignore them, but that doesn't change the fact that the views were his.

If anything, it's far more offensive how he's been whitewashed as a liberal figure of meek platitudes.

Yeah, in the end I think I fall on the side of thinking that it's important to attempt to "correct the record" so to speak, and that if he were still alive he probably wouldn't mind people using his legacy* to push a socialist/anti-capitalist message (since that was a message he supported himself). * I guess it wouldn't be his "legacy" if he were still alive, but you know what I meant

So while doing some reading on Elin Wägner I drifted off into articles about womens right to vote. smugging my way down the dates of Scandinavian superiority in the general field of "not treating everyone like poo poo" I found that the New Jersey constitution from 1776 gave women and African Americans the right to vote. Beating us all by about 150 years.

The fact that the progressive stuff ever got passed is itself significant though, in that it challenges a lot about the normal view of history (I.e. that everyone was a stuffy conservative until about 1964).

Georgia was initially founded to be this whole yeoman colony that could form up militias to fight off spanish incursions out of florida, it wasn't so much PROGRESSIVE as "poor whites getting paid off by the plantation owners will have basically no morale compared to people actively defending their own homes."

Yes it's not like the overbearing political power of African American and women lobby groups put pressure on them. Enough people in the leadership just acknowledged that it was the right thing to do.

I will say that I just have a hard time parsing what the best-case scenario here is. Assuming we just take her at her word, she "crashed" a party without actually disrupting it. And the result: everybody involved, both Nazis and her Dem opponents, seems happy she came, and are happy with the coverage that trashes her chances at a Senate run. I don't think she thought this through.
