I don't remember it being that bad. Gameplay wise they hold up but camera makes many games literally unplayable. i like how they didn't bother making the camera less rear end in the HD remakes of Kingdom Hearts. my wife replayed the first one and is on the second one and i'm like "ugh i haven't even gotten to the first world yet and i'm already sick of this"

This is how I learned that the controller had pressure sensitive buttons, and from then on it was pretty easy not to accidentally shoot a dude (still held them up with the tranq gun just in case). Maybe something like a gun safety button might have worked better, with the FPV view just automatically bringing the gun up. It would have made sense too since Snake calls out Raiden for having the safety on.

There was a cool little detail in that: that if you tried shooting a held-up guard and tried firing an empty gun, he’d hear the click and turn on you. MGS3 had pressure sensitive buttons when putting a guy in a choke hold. Hold down circle to keep the guy in the hold. Press just a little too hard and snake slashes his throat open. ![]()

I don't like the storytelling in Half Life 2 either. I loved how Half Life 1 very much felt like a workplace accident, it opens with a commute, you meet generic security guards, faceless acquaintances and colleagues in a way that's very relatable, you're also a faceless and voiceless person yourself. You then find yourself in a situation where you suddenly have to rely on these faceless people for solidarity against what's basically an interdimensional gently caress-up by the higher ups. It feels a bit like Office Space or something like that. Gordon is a great character, a completely silent protagonist who only expresses himself in actions, the perfect videogame protagonist. HL2 had to put names and faces on these characters, it created Alyx Vance, a ridiculous love interest with pixarface for Gordon. Next to these people and their motivations you still had faceless squad members who just felt expendable next to the named characters, you already knew they weren't important because they weren't named. In HL, I always made sure I escorted a coterie of guards and scientists as far as I could, you never knew if some old scientist could open a door for you. I felt responsible for the fuckers.

I think the aliens in 1/Warhead are a nice change of pace where you're forced to try different weapons and tactics. In 2nd / 3rd they're more "humanlike" which doesn't break the flow, just adds some variety. And loving drat Crysis 3 still looks better than most games released in 2017.

Silent protagonists in general suck if you actually want to have a game with a story unless they have really good body language like Wind Waker Link or Doomguy. HL2 really suffered for still having Gordon be silent. It makes the game awkward when people constantly praise him to his face and all he does is stare blankly at them and swing his crowbar around.

HL1's story worked perfectly with a silent protagonist though. Anyone else thought that Alyx's cube necklace looked like it was fused to her skin?

I felt this way too. Those few moments where you needed to keep someone alive to progress were interesting in that if you killed them, you just got a quiet game over screen like 'Gordon Freeman, Status: Deceased' because you were just another name on a much larger list, and no one will ever know what happened to you. Having characters like Barney in HL2 be voiced was weird because EVERY security guard in HL1 was 'Barney'. Also for a game about travelling to different dimensions, it's a shame they didn't have different dimension versions of characters pop in and out sometimes.

Fallout New Vegas is broken trash compared to Fallout 3 and 4, even though the wolrd building and story is miles better than 3 and 4, which both have really unbeleivably awful stories. More unpopularly, I think they're all a blast to play through. Weird thing is that I'm the only one of my friends who likes New Vegas at all. My other freinds played all the games thru to completion and think that New Vegas is a half finished broken embarrassment to the series as a whole (seriously we're talking about a dozen unrelated people who all loving despise that game). I don't know how popular these opinions really are to be honest, sometimes it seems like people who hate Bethesda titles are just really invested in hating them and skew online conversations a bit, but I've always thought they've made games that are perfect for loving around in after smoking a bowl or something, buggy as they are.

AAA are trash. Their overall quality and bug issues are on the level of early access titles on Steam with "Mixed" or lower review scores. Except they cost a lot more and have more pointless grinding gameplay.

Final Fantasy VIII is actually really cool, and the fact that you can bust it wide open and get absurdly powerful if you want to is a point in its favor. The Majima Everywhere system is an awful addition to Yakuza Kiwami. Golden Sun is an atrociously boring game and nobody would have thought twice about it if it didn't have an absolute banger of a battle theme. It's gorgeous but I absolutely cannot parse anything that's going in Guilty Gear Xrd, even though I'm a series fan and really want to love it. I don't like the changes to Baiken's moves, either.

EA is bad and Ubisoft is bad. Microtransactions in general are bad. Basically everything they've done since 2006 is bad. You would think that this is not an unpopular opinion, but a quick glance at their stock prices and their retained earnings over the past few quarters would prove otherwise. EA's stock is up 15% ever since the bad PR they got from that Reddit thread last month, for example, and Ubisoft's stock has more than tripled since AssCreed:Unity came out.
