Greek announcer from Rome 1 was the best. "VIICTORYYYY!!! ... a bit close perhaps, but VICTORYYYY none the same!" (with a ridiculous accent) Actually the best thing was the little video you got in Shogun 2 when you built mangonels. Unless I was dreaming all those years ago it was "Not even the strongest castle walls can withstand these flaming balls" Can't find a video of it. I wish more games used a wider range of American accents, rather than just sticking primarily to new caster/Californian.

"News caster" or the General American accent comes from the eastern Midwest and western New England, and you including Californian as the same thing is probably why it's hard to get a good variety of accents. General American is what most people consider "correct" English pronunciation, so I think that a lot of Americans end up with variations of GA. It'd be really hard to fit in a variety of easily recognisable American accents into anything and still have the plot make any sense, like why everyone in the plot is from large North Eastern cities or the South.

There are only 4 real types of English. Think of them as quadrants on a grid. They are: Southern, Limey, Jamaican, and Normal. (Normal is Midwestern American)

The Midwestern accent is called Midland, and it's also spoken in southern New Jersey and San Francisco. Midland is further divided into (North) Midland and South Midland, with a strip of land between Midland and North Central being the place where General American is spoken.

Apparently the HBO Rome series really did plan to do a lot with different British accents mapping onto different Roman social classes, but toned it down because, you know, all that effort would be wasted on us. Also, my favorite medieval 2 mod was one that replaced voice files with the files from the appropriate localization-- so the French now used the files from the French-language version, and so forth.

That reminds me, apparently when they eventually did a German dub of Hogan's Heroes, they were really careful to pick extremely specific accents for the German characters which added a whole other level of class humor for the German audience.

Oh those Germans!

They did that for Oliver Stone's Alexander movie IIRC, the Macedonians were mostly Irish actors and spoke their accent, the Greeks that showed up I think were English and such. Can't remember how deep it went since it's been ages since I watched that movie, but I'm pretty sure it was a conscious effort. Anyway the best media thing that's been done that actively uses accents in a good way is the show 'Allo 'Allo!

I can imagine the British part of the team was dead set on it and had trouble understanding opinions to the contrary. They do this in virtually every show they make, even for children. The Brits are possibly a more class obsessed society than the Romans were.

Remember how in Napoleon and Empire people would actually speak their own languages? That was neat. I liked how Shogun 2 went from actual Japanese voice acting to full scale Engrish in Fall of the Samurai: THEY FAIHGHT LAIKE DEEEEEVILS!
|
# ? Jan 14, 2018 10:20 |
What is weird is they had Japanese voice files (for the Japanese market of the game?) but hilariously the grammar or phrasing is off. But it still is modded in in some situations. Along with the suspicious amount of cut content for that expansion makes me wonder what they had planned originally for it.

Am I the only one that doesn't like FotS? The gimmick was fun but overall it was pretty uninteresting, good for one playthrough. People complain about Dark Elves being boring, in FotS campaign every faction ended up being "mow down hapless AI with superweapons" and the unavoidable naval game was atrocious.
