Having you convince the Crucible to go along with one of your plans rather than having it tell you what the options are would have really made a difference. I mean, there’s an obvious golden ending in there where you convince it based on your achievements throughout the game that the gap between humans and machines is not insurmountable, and they can live in harmony.

Talking down endgame villains is a grand old Bioware tradition, after all.

A better idea is just to cut out that stupid techno-god poo poo completely. I don't need a completely new character introduced 5 minutes before the series ends and replaces Shepard as the protagonist, robbing the player of agency.

Thems good videos. But even funnier is that Bioware patched in that if you shot the stupid ghost, like shown in that video, it automatically triggers a fail state. The writers want to give you the finger there.

nah, 2 was still a good game with a bad plot. much of the character writing and the locations made up for the plot being a whole lot of spinning your tires for the entire game. omega was fuckin rad.

on the other hand, the game did introduce miranda, who was an incredibly terrible character on every possible level.

It's surprising how little this comes up, even in more academic contexts that would avoid the obvious "what's wrong with robo titty????" question. It's one of the initial reasons I avoided the game, even before the ending drama.

BOTL in "making a post I agree with" shocker.

I've always struggled to get into Bioware games tbh, they just don't do it for me - at least the ones I've played, which to be fair isn't a lot.

It's not working out too well...
Shamus Young did a whole retrospective on the Mass Effect games (incidentally, Bob Case aka MrBTongue also writes up stuff on Twenty Sided).

The takeaway I had from that write-up and my own playthroughs of Mass Effect 1 and 2 (haven't played 3 yet) is that Mass Effect 1, as a game, missed the mark. It's an okay cover shooter, but it gets bogged down by the awful inventory system and other various quirks. However, where ME1 excelled was in it's world building and writing.

ME2 on the other hand fixed the cover-shooting to be a lot better (though I though they reduced it too much, and the thermal clip mechanic isn't as interesting as the weapon cool-down in ME1). However, while I really liked ME2 when I played through it, Shamus Young pointed out that the main plot doesn't make a lot of sense when you break it down. A lot of the other writing with your party members is still great, but the game's main plot (Shepard working with Cerberus) along with some of the other story beats don't mesh or seem consistent with ME1.

They moved away from the "standard Bioware plot" after Dragon Age Origins / Mass Effect 1, and even Origins starts to avoid it given the variety of ways the game can start.

Eh, ME2 is kind of the standard plot. You're just collecting party members instead.

EDIT: /\ they're bad, but the sad thing is they're still better than 90% of game devs.

This game is so cliche, there's an inciting incident that the characters respond to culminating in a resolution of the central conflict. Might as well be clones.

I’ve listened to the first episode and I’m glad they drag it for the terrible style and endless repetition of simple vocabulary. There’s basically only one word longer than four syllables in the entire book, and everything else is just flatly described in maddeningly vague language.

But the story itself doesn’t follow even basic rules. There’s no suspense, the main character risks nothing and loses nothing, learns nothing, and remains the very model of a thoughtless consumer. It’s basically a vindication of passive consumption, as the unlikeable main character is rewarded for simply liking video games and comic books. He never has to do anything other than know about video games and is celebrated for it by everyone. He’s basically the exact kind of person who would have gotten really into gamergate, and I’m kind of afraid to look up the author to see what he was up to between 2012 and 2015 or so.

How many times must I remind you to WASH YOUR HANDS?

I was so sad when I played Tuchanka in ME3 because I knew there was no possible way to go up from there, and I was right.

One thing that's incredibly minor but that I hated was the use of the child. It's a kid that you and Shepard see for all of maybe 10 seconds before dying, but keeps reappearing throughout the game -- repeatedly in Shepard's dreams and then in the end as the sentient button you press to get your ending. Like, I get it, he's an innocent that dies and represents Shepard's fear of failure. They needed something to guilt you with if you hadn't played the first game (so Ashley or Kaidan was out). But from meta perspective, non-protagonist children in video games are very rarely anything more than poorly-voice acted props, and children had pretty much never appeared in-game in the series before, so I new instantly why the child was there, what was going to happen, and thus I felt nothing. Maybe I'm a weird monster at heart, but I think I would have been much more emotionally affected if the kid was, like, a puppy. You chase the ghost puppy through your dreams. You talk to the ghost puppy to get your ending.

...okay, maybe the emotional effect would be confusion or amusement, but it would be something :v:

This is why I went through and played the trilogy again last year on PC. There's a whole subset of mods out there dedicated to fixing all the stupid poo poo BioWare did with Ashley on a visual and gameplay level, like giving her proper off-duty fatigues like everyone else gets, making her default armor look more like her ME1/ME2 Phoenix default armor, toning down the make up and giving her back the bun hairdo, and most important of all fixing the infinitely triggering Marksman bug after BioWare just gave up on bothering to patch it.

Just like Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 is kind of the tale of a mediocre game that's been lifted up into something much better than it is thanks to the hard work of disappointed fans.

Also gently caress all of you, Rannoch is the pinnacle of the third game's plot. Leigon's death hit me harder than Mordin's ever did.

It's funny because in my head I constantly refer to Jacob as Jerrid (something that came out of the ME3 thread in Games, if I'm not mistaken), because I like to think that my Shepards, especially my FemShep just can't be bothered to remember his loving name because he's so bland and boring and forgettable whenever he's not immediately in front of their face.
