It is buying more AAPL, OP means that her mom hasn't purposefully purchased additional stock, just means that it's set up to automatically purchase more shares when dividends pay out. One of my Roth IRA funds it set to the do the same thing so I can just kind of set it and forget it.

Speaking of donations... My family is BWM and may have funded extremists in the middle east.

My (middle eastern) family has a WhatsApp chat group . It's meant for family related poo poo, like chatting, planning and sharing pictures. What it quickly devolves into is forward-forward religious spam, anti-israeli propaganda and this amazing video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtRT6hjXfWg forwarded by my mother with translated subtitles as a real warning that they use cocaine in tomato sauce with no hint of humour.

Of course I get sick of this poo poo and eventually leave. The last straw was when a relative decided to gather donations for a "charity" that wants to build a school. Did the org have a site? or something reputable? Nope, just a bank details you were meant to wire the money to. A lot of my family donates. Not a week later we get a video thanking people for the donations and their plans to buy more land and build something else and they need more money for this new project. They showed a random patch of barren land, near nothing, not even other houses.

I said something about how suspicious all of this was, especially their first project of building a school hasn't even been finished and left.

You are actually not allowed to dismantle your house after showing and agreeing to a sale. There are expectations that you can get sued for if you remove. I am assuming insulation falls under that category.

And they were using it for growing all these bulbs, and everybody loved it. The project lasted one year and then they cancelled everything. We were like, 'wwww we thought you liked this stuff.'

'Yeah, we did like it.'

'Well what was the problem?'
(slow pan into speaker begins)

They didn't keep track of their, it's a mail-order business, and they didn't keep track of their postage till the end of the season.

And our product weighed two to thray- three time more. So the cost of shipping. They had the same price on the shipping. Totally killed the project. *laugh* Someone probably got fired."

I have no idea in that case, but in the US you can ship live plants in soil wherever you want around the country, there aren't any rules about it as far as I know. I used to order plants through a couple different places and you'd get a box with seedlings/etc in soil in the mail.

Grandparents have lost $30k to lottery scams. They took out a $150k loan to pay for another. How can I help?

quote:

My grandparents (80 and 85, Georgia) get phonecalls from "the Department of Treasury" letting them know they have won $xxx, xxx and all they need to do is send $1000 to some person for "taxes" and then they will receive the money.

To my knowledge, they have sent $30k in total.

The situation at hand: my grandma got a letter saying she won $4.5 Million from "Mega Million" and she has to put up $150k (the lottery fund is putting up $250k "on her behalf") and then she will get 4.5M. She also is told she will receive a 2017 Mercedes. She is awaiting a loan for the 150k to come through.

She is keeping this as secret as possible from her two children (50s). I do not know what to do. My grandparents are okay financially, but this loan would be an extreme hardship.

Things we have tried (as a family): - blocking phone numbers on their phones - calling the scammers ourselves - showing them Google searches that indicate the phone numbers belong to scammers - having friends in the police come to their house and read the letters and give their opinion

Clearly nothing is working. Any advice would be great, thank you.

Gender roles guilt me into being fat.
My dad (61) called me one morning asking me how I was in a passive-aggressive way.

Turns out someone called my grandparents (83) and told them I was in a Las Vegas jail and needed $3,000 in iTunes gift cards to bail me out. Then they put on someone impersonating me and saying I was scared to be anally raped in a jail. My grandparents called my dad and his sister and they told them it was probably a scam. But still, they weren't sure.

Other than the fact that we outright allow rape of prisoners in America and everyone knows it, what other part of that story is believable? And why are working-age adults unsure of the situation? The grandparents, sure, they have significant mental deterioration. But working age adults? iTunes gift cards, my God.

A world where you can bail out family or pay fines with a hodgepodge of gift cards is a world I'm alright living in.

Like need to pay a speeding fine? Here's a Starbucks gift card with 3 dollars left on it, a $25 Olive Garden card, and a $100 Sears GC that you may want to redeem sooner rather than later.
