To be fair, if you were trying to warn people of an actual missile attack, would you want the software to waste time asking for confirmation?

You'd think after that kerfuffle, more places would be extra vigilant not to send out false alarms. You'd be wrong

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Police say a local man burnt down his parents home yesterday, for something his brother did to him 10 years ago. Police say 29-year-old Joel Cruz was home alone and got angry because his brother farted in his face a decade ago. Police say Cruz then put a pot with vegetable oil on the stove, turned it on high, and ran out of the building. Cruz told police he heard voices in his head and was put through a mental evaluation. Police say they tried to put him in a state hospital, but the hospitals turned him away because he was a danger to others and himself. http://kimatv.com/news/local/local-man-sets-house-on-fire-blames-it-on-brothers-decade-old-fart-prank hmm

jojoinnit posted:come again? Washington is one of the worst states in the nation for mental health. They've got a mental health crisis, but all their psychiatric care facilities are understaffed, underfunded, and seriously over capacity. Historically this led to a process called "warehousing" or "psychiatric boarding"; the police would pick up people having mental health crises but all the psych hospitals had 100+ person waiting lists, so the cops would leave people in hospitals or jail for days or weeks at a time. In 2014 the state Supreme Court told the police that, in fact, they were not allowed to leave mentally ill people sedated in hallways for days at a time without care. The court ruled that everyone the cops pick up is entitled to adequate care and individual treatment, and that lack of funding is no excuse. In theory this ruling required the state to provide adequate mental health funding. In practice, the state did not provide this funding. This leads to situations like this one, which happen all the time. The police have a mentally ill guy and the places that can care for him don't have the room to admit him. The places that can't care for him (like hospitals) don't want him, and can no longer be forced to take him. Generally speaking, this means that he will be kept in jail without any care, then later on he or his family will sue the state.

Used to live near there. The wolves are very well socialised with humans. To the point where you can take them for a walk (well, walk with them) on the weekends. They're not dogs but you really get a close up idea of how they were domesticated.
