[Interior, millennium falcon. Rey is playing space chess against herself and it's kind of uncomfortable] Luke appears, glowing blue faintly Luke: Rey, I have come to help you complete your training. Find a man named Kyle Ka- wait a minute, are those the Jedi books? Rey: Yeah I stole them. What are you gonna do about it, ghost boy? Luke sulks back to Force Ghost Land.

Strom Cuzewon posted:Which makes the whole conversation with Luke utterly pointless. Negative. The whole point of the conversation, hell, the movie, is about failure and how failure is a teaching moment. Luke needs to get over his failures to succeed, as does everyone else in the flick. I'll spoil this I guess but it's vague everything in the movie is a failure, every plan, scheme, mutiny, training, fight, escape.

Episode 9 should be good if only for Ghost Luke and Yoda bickering about how to continue training Rey while she is there getting annoyed with every passing second.

I so wish they'd make Kyle Katarn canon. I was kiiinda thinking they'd be going there what with Luke talking about opening up a school in the past, like in Jedi Academy, but it turned out to be something quite different.

It's a rather iconic scene, but I love the interplay between the Emperor and Vader in Empire Strikes Back, when they are talking about Luke Skywalker. It works in either version of the film, but I'm going off the Ian McDiarmid version, because hey, McDiarmid. Vader brings up turning Luke to the Dark Side, because part of his reaction to realizing he's got a son is to immediately love him and want to save his life...but also maybe getting a chance to off Palpatine. And on the other end, You can tell that Palpatine is immediately planning to get a brand new Anakin Skywalker 2.0 that doesn't have to recharge the batteries on his legs and feet every six hours. It's just wonderful. Two fuckers an inch away from saying that they should get Our Hero for the sole reason of loving the other one over.

Saw John Wick again, and I noticed that when Theon Greyjoy sees John Wick as John Wick for the first time (not random man with cool car) hes literally crouched on top of a man whom he coldly executes by shooting in the head while maintaining eye contact with Theon. Thought that was a neat way of showing why hes referred to as the Baba Yaga for the whole film; to the people he is going after he literally is a monster who appears from the shadows to murder at will.

I was rewatching The Man With the Golden Gun. While enticing Goodnight into bed by saying that there's "nothing for them to do" unless they get a call updating them on the situation, Bond takes the phone in his room off the hook. The movie really doesn't point it out, but it's absolutely in character for James Bond to do.

I love that movie. I only wish it were about thirty minutes shorter. (We reeeeally needed the car chase with the American redneck sheriff.) Christopher Lee was one of the best Bond villains ever.

The other great part about that moment is that John could very easily kill Theon at that moment. But he's not going to. Because two in the brain would be too good for the piece of poo poo who murdered John Wick's dog.

A goofy subtle thing happened in the English dub of Dragon Ball Super. There was a short story arc involving Vegeta getting copied by an alien substance making an evil duplicate. However instead of just having Christopher Sabat (who normally voices Vegeta) do it they instead brought in Brian Drummond, who voiced him in the original English dub back in the 90s.

It's one thing to say "look how culturally porous the world is" with a few Chinese characters strewn about, but they went as far as Korean advertisements for bubble tea, Hindi translations in the police station, Coca Cola signs in Hebrew, etc. It's a small commitment to world building but it makes it so much more believable.

However instead of just having Christopher Sabat (who normally voices Vegeta) do it they instead brought in Brian Drummond, who voiced him in the original English dub back in the 90s. I just checked with a friend of mine who's far more knowledgeable about Dragon Ball for the specifics on this one, and they actually make it even better. Drummond voiced Vegeta in the original American dub of DBZ, by Ocean Dub; they did the Saiyan Saga, but nothing further. A couple years later Funimation (who has Sabat for Vegeta) picked up and continued the dub from the next storyline (the Namek Saga) and beyond, and later went back and did their own version of the Saiyan Saga too once DBZ really blew up and started getting picked up internationally. Their version is the one that's more widely known worldwide, but Ocean Dub's still typically the one remembered in the US; no other version of the script has specifically the line "Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power level?" But in the States, even when the Funimation version of the Saiyan Saga was available (which it was for most of DBZ's run and core popularity) the Ocean Dub version created a lot of confusion because broadcasters like Toonami still had it kicking around, and either didn't understand or didn't care about the difference. This meant that they switched between them all the time and confused the hell out of kids watching, because voice actors would change all over the place. And Vegeta was one of the more noticeable ones, partly because he had some exposition that didn't square with the later Funimation script but mostly because Drummond and Sabat's performances are really different; I would describe Drummond as very sneering and weaselly, compared to how Sabat was very shouty. Still, Drummond being the fake Vegeta is even better because of that, since a ton of kids who kept unexpectedly seeing the Ocean Dub already thought of him as 'the fake Vegeta'. The bit that drags that scene down for me is that it has the characters pause to say "guys there's a cool stunt coming up" and then pause again to say 'oh that was a cool stunt wasnt it boys?" It could have got away with the slide whistle without that build up. Heck, keep the slide whistle and just throw the barrel roll into the middle of a chase scene and I'd bet people would be hailing it as one of the greatest gags in cinema. Compare it to when Daniel Craig rolls his car to avoid running over Vespa in Casino Royale. It's a much less impressive stunt from a technical perspective, but works so much better in the film because it just blindsides the audience.
