If you try to cash out your Chuck E Cheese tokens they tell you to contact customer support.

slidebite posted:I'm still trying to understand wtf a tether is The company issuing them hasn’t undergone an audit since they started printing them and 1.6 bn have been issued so far, almost all of them in the last year or so. Due to the way arbitrage works you can’t have too high a discrepancy between the price of a crypto in Tether and the price in USD. So issuing a bunch of tether and using these to blast through the orderbook during periods of weakness can help support prices. It’s the #1 systemic risk in crypto and when it goes we’ll see lower 4 digits possibly 3 digit BTC prices. Which is when I’m buying the gently caress out of it.

They have a lot of defenders in this thread and my experiences with them haven't been historically awful like the MtGox depositors, but yeah, Coinbase pulls their share of shady poo poo too. They are better than some, true, but I wouldn't trust any of the exchanges as depositee of a sum of money I didn't want to lose. But I give Coinbase a lot of credit for at least trying to run like a business, and they are more transparent than most. Coinbase at least says they have a plan for what happens if they get MtGoxed and all the bitcoin is gone and they made it available to the public ( https://www.coinbase.com/legal/insurance ) which is more than Celery ever did. Whether they could carry it out in the event remains to be seen, I guess.

Is Coinbase really based in the US? One of my co-workers told me they added their credit card on there and the temp charges they got to authenticate the card got flagged by Chase as international transactions.

They print tether on one exchange but its not limited to that exchange. You can trade tether for BTC and then sell that BTC for money on another exchange.

Whenever I've dealt with them it's been the people in San Francisco, but they have offices all over the world.

So basically the contagion of tether is not limited to the exchange which originates it, but to all exchanges which trade BTC with it. Its all fine though, our cryptoexchanges are too big to fail and will be bailed out.
