Every now and then I reload Emperor: Battle for Dune. It's Westwood Lynchian and the Atreides are OP but goddamn that game has some fine moments. Get a Fedaykin on wormback and start eating people's spice harvesters.

When I can make it work anyway. Last time around here i've not been able to get the 16 bit installer to work and the only build of the game i can find that works is one that's stripped musicless and has no campaigns.

Just got all caught up on this thread, good stuff. Despite all its flaws I love the Lynch adaptation. The opening scene with the Emperor's court and the spacing guild showing up really captured my imagination when I saw it as a young squirt. The alarms clearing the court with all the weirdos in their weird outfits coming in, and the navigator's pod thingie was ominous as hell. After that I read all the original books and even tried a couple of his son's but knew they were straight up garbage right off the bat. Oddly I think Chapterhouse is my favourite out of the books, stuff really kicks off. Miles Teg owns. It just kind of sucks it ends on a cliffhanger but better that than following the BH/KJA crapfest that followed. Thread has me excited to read through all the books again now!

My partner and I have been riffing on the internal thoughts of all the characters in the Lynch film all day. One of us says something or sees something and murmurs an observation to each other. Often by working spice into it. The film is great. It feels like you're looking into the world of ten thousand years from now without a filter. Love the Baron. Love the Harkonnens. Love how Rabban just casually shoves one of their slaves out of the way without fanfare. Love Gurney changing into battle with a pug under his jacket. Skyfall was boring and Spectre was plain stupid. I guess you mean there was a lot of contention, makes sense. I don't know why a seasoned director would want to step in on Bond, the re-launch was a disappointment and Dune will probably be a playground by comparison. Fresh, malleable and even though I see it possibly making a bunch of cash and drawing in some new fans, it'll be way easier to start up a Dune movie than to salvage where Bond is at right now.

The mentat was also by Leto' s shoulder when he was young. From the harkonnens he learned constant resistance, which is what Leto wanted for his descendants to emulate to eventually produce Siona. Plus, he was a good breeder for difficult dams.

Maybe it's b/c I only recently watched the movie after growing up with Dune, but while it does some things astoundedly well like production design and casting, I felt like it only had a passing resemblance to the political and thematically rich books. As a film adapted from a fast paced and exciting book, it also completely missed how thrilling things got, from the speed of events to how balls out adventure like the action scenes were. Appreciate the weirdness and love Lynch's other work, but it's definitely not the definitive version of Dune.

The Dune movie just came on on Showtime, watching it from the jump. Never watched it all the way through. One minute in and the opening monologue by the Princess is already a mis-step. But gently caress that Shaddam set, freaking gorgeous. The Guild scene is a classic for a reason, so imaginative. So many voiceovers. I don't know if there is a way to translate Dune probably without them, but it definitely hurts this movie immensely. The weirding modifications Lynch did to the book is understandable (I mean the books describe them basically as Dragonball moves IIRC) but good god is it loving goofy. I should prob wrap this up b/c who the gently caress wants to read this, but the movie truly suffers from having to deliver hundreds of pages of dense machinations in a 2 and half hour movie. The dialogue is mechanical, almost completely exposition as a necessity to deliver the information needed to paint a story that really needs much more time to be delivered naturally and visually well. The classic hero's story, which is the most effective hook in Dune which Herbert uses to slip his commentary behind it, is sidelined by Lynch's dream like handling of narrative and plot. An interesting miss altogether. And lol the Fremen are totally hosed here. haha Lynch makes an appearance in the movie as a spice harvestor, that's hilarious. There's a Guild navigator in the second book that it reminds me of though. It was called a third stage Navigator I think? And it alludes to what happens to Leto II later.

I'm a fan of the weird voice overs in the Lynch film. There's something slightly off about most of the acting that fits well with how intense and weird the visuals are. The short voice over before the navigator visits the emperor is pitched perfectly.

It's based very loosely on the Navigator scene in Messiah, and then Herbert just straight up went "that was pretty cool, I'll do that in my next book" after seeing the film. Whole second half of the film is pretty much trash. You simply can't fit the imperial side and the fremens' story in one film, so they end up sort of hanging around and never being explored.

Its been forever since I've seen it but IIRC the movie also leaves out a kind of neat part from the end where during the fracas with the Emperor's forces there's a quick description of a Guild Navigator holding a hand over an eye and Paul sees that he's lost a contact lens because the eye is like solid blue.

And it was painfully obvious that the Baron was setting Feyd up to be the next Padishah Emperor, with the most feared and respected Master of Assassins at his back and a fief-complete of Arrakis to ensure enough economic leverage to make it possible, and thus fulfill his own personal ambition of placing a Harkonnen on the throne. The Baron. loving. Won. His only failing was the same failing that pretty much every other major character in the book had - he failed to forsee the Kwisatz Haderach coming and steamrolling the Empire into utter submission. gently caress you, Lynch, and your floating fat man. The Baron is not a joke. The Baron is terrifying and dangerous, and every scene should have been filled with menace.
