$650/mo + $200/mo utilities for 5 years, plus maybe $3,000 in incidentals is an even $60,000 so it’s a luxury but not crazy. Just get a cat apartment and be done with it.

The kid question can break up a lot of couples if they are on different pages, especially when there's fears of a clock running out. It's just a really hosed up situation for everyone that's no going to leave anyone happy. If the dude kills his horrible but beloved cat he's going to resent her for making this demand, if they stay together but never have a kid because of some ancient rear end in a top hat cat she's going to resent him picking a loving cat over having a family. If they break up over it there's again going to be a lot of resentment that their whole future relationship and potential family was derailed by a nasty gross old cat.

Ultimately what will happen is they'll wait a couple years, the cat will become more and more nasty but show no signs of death. Eventually they'll break up over the issue and a month later the cat will die.

Honestly doesn't even sound like he enjoys having the cat. He even said he's never getting one again because of how awful it is. Dude will be fine.

But no, I also do find it sorta dumb that some people put such a massive amount of time and money into keeping suffering animals alive through a bunch of surgeries, because I don't think pets are really important enough to warrant that

Anyway, yes, it is a totally valid thing to have a cat put down because you want to have a child and your cat is violent and might hurt the child, and I honestly do not consider the life of a cat important enough on a grand scale to warrant not having children if, in absentia of the cat, you would have the children

I have had pets, I do not consider them to be as important as humans, and if you do then you are probably real loving annoying as a pet owner

You aren’t going to get any kid for the bargain bin price of $60,000. A cat is modest in comparison. Frankly you shouldn’t even risk a kid without an emergency fund which absolutely can apply to the cat situation.

Yeah ideally they'd just maybe give the cat another year or wait until she's actually pregnant then humanely get rid of the cat and feel a tiny bit guilty about it then move on with their lives like normal not cat-hoarder people. It's a lovely situation but when the choice is between a marriage and family vs an elderly rear end in a top hat of a cat no one really likes it shouldn't be a hard choice. There's a lot of crazy cat people out there though so it might be possible to re-home it too. Probably the same sort of people who have constant gofundme's to get their 20 year old blind partially paralyzed diabetic cat it's 3rd $5000 operation to extend its life another month because of the sacred contract of cat ownership.

I get that people are gonna scream about how cats are precious babies who deserve love, but a 10+ year old cat with behavioral issues probably isn't gonna get adopted by anyone, and it's monumentally retarded to act like they should either not have children or put their children at risk for the sake of an old cat that hates them

Like, they're not killing a healthy and friendly 2 year old cat because they're tired of it, and if an animal is actually extremely inconvenient to your life or a risk to a human you care about, yes, discard it, because humans are more important than animals

christ, just delay children, why is everyone acting like this is some super loving immediate thing? Have children after the cat passes on. It's not that difficult a concept. She even said that's what she wants to do.

Literally all she needs to do is say "I'd like to have kids, but I don't think we should until your cat has passed on for both of their sakes. Kids would freak out the cat, and the cat might scratch the kids." Fuckin done.

teach the cat a profession and have it rent its own place, problem solved. but then after some time it doesnt call as often and picks up rarely, visits less and less and soon its only on christmas and one day you two just dont know each other that well anymore, and after a few years they walk by each other on the street and just nod their head and walk on, bot kinda sad it got like this but its ok now, they got stuff to do.

oh wait maybe thats the baby

The most humane solution is to lock their future baby in a room with the old cat, Thunderdome-style.

Humans are more evolved than and clearly superior to cats. If that baby can’t figure it out, then they weren’t fit to survive in the first place.

I’m not talking about a horse where the startup might be $60k. This is spread over the remaining lifetime of the cat. If the market stays good you could probably swing it with a $50,000 initial investment if you are solvent and don’t need to trickle in as you go.

That cat doesn't sound like it actually likes being around people anyway, so how about they decide to get a bigger apartment and have a room for the cat with one of those kid-proof door knob covers on it? Hell throw a baby gate up if you're paranoid it's gonna run out. Get it a cat tree, a heating pad, a radio, a bunch of toys and leave the curtains open. Visit at meal times. Let angry cat have it's own space. Also you can store a bunch of rando junk in there because the cat doesn't need a whole loving room.

Bonus, when the cat goes, then boom! kid gets a playroom or one of them gets a home office or something. This is all win, win.

Yeah I really don't know why keeping it in one room isn't an option. She says she'll forget or something, but that's almost certainly not true. Two of my parents' cats live in one room of the house and literally could not give a poo poo unless I walk past the door with food they can smell.

My dad does something kind of similar. He has their house set up so his cat and my mom’s cat won’t “cross paths”. I don’t mean that in the sense of the cats encountering one another, they don’t do that obviously. He’s got this issue where he doesn’t want their pathfinding to overlap, like how he doesn’t want food to touch on his plate. He thinks it’ll warp the cats. Who knows.

What happens if he ignores his $120 allowance a month on stupid loving worthless dolls that he doesn't take out of packages, repeatedly, I understand his next month allowance is decreased by the amount, but what if he continually does it? Does the wife get to kill him? Does she get to go spend the same amount on male escorts? Does she get to light a fire and burn all of them? Does she win the divorce lottery and get the gently caress away from this guy AND get the dumb doll collection?

Barring that, take it to a no-kill shelter.

According to my wife, who’s worked at a humane society for more than a decade, there’s not really any such thing as a “no-kill” shelter - just ones where they don’t impose time limits on how long an adoptable animal can be up for adoption without going home with anyone. (I THINK this is what she said. I’ll have to double-check.)

If a pet comes in sick or antisocial, they’re still getting the needle. I can almost guarantee that cat would not make it from intake to the adoption center, if they’d take an owned animal at all.

But! that could just be the way things work around here. I’m far from an expert.
