Yeah, Raisman is pissed that USAG hasn't done anything or offered up how he was able to prey on their athletes for so long unchecked. She's plenty upset at Nassar, but she seems even angrier at USAG.

I've always kind of struggled with this, too. I think the amount of pressure put on these children is insane and has to be psychologically damaging. On the other hand, I think a lot of these kids very much want to compete, and do so by their own choice. Undoubtedly some of them simply cannot know what they're signing themselves up for when they get into very high level gymnastics competition, but most of them are not idiots and children are actually very resilient, too.

But I still find it disturbing. I feel terrible for the ones that fail to win a medal, and worse, the ones who don't even make the team. The amount of time and dedication they have to put into gymnastics, it must totally take over their personal lives, they can sense the hopes and anticipation of their parents, coaches, etc. And then they don't quite make it, some other girl is marginally better... I bet a lot of times basic genetics holds them back, they have a non-optimal body type as they develop. Because of course you have to get started when you're like 10 years old, and you have no idea what your body will be like when you're at the optimal age of around 15 or 16 or whatever.

I dunno. I don't wanna tell kids they can't do gymnastics if it's what they love, but I can't help but feel like the fallout from the pressure they're under amounts to psychological trauma, at least in some cases. I bet if you interviewed a hundred ex-gymnasts in their 30s, you'd get a lot of women who say they have no regrets, but maybe a few who do?

High-level gymnasts are on strict diets and exercise regimens, though, and they have to practice for hours daily or near-daily. I've heard that due to the extremely strict dieting and high levels of muscle development and exercise that many of these young girls have delayed puberty, not beginning menstruation until later than average. Lots of the guys in this thread do extreme dieting and exercise, it's not like that's necessarily abusive... but it's a significant impact on their bodies and development.

No. It's a sport where girls who have not developed fully have a distinct advantage. There is a reason China is always trying to sneak 12 year olds in. The result is you end up with young girls training non stop under tremendous pressure, to say nothing of the weirdos in charge.

I mean all sports have strict diet and exercise regimens, I suppose gymnastics is worse because they compete from a younger age. I was just saying that small people self select themselves into gymnastics rather than the sport stunting their growth but maybe that’s wrong too..

No doubt. Maybe because it's pre-teen girls it seems worse, but a ton of the poo poo parents put their kids through is questionable. A lot of parents are trying to grasp at the feeling of triumph and glory through their childrens' accomplishments, and apply more pressure than is healthy to get there.

Yeah the issue I guess is that the dieting is intentionally aimed at restricting growth, to an absurd degree. Also, lots of girls whose bodies are not ideal for high-level competitive gymnastics still do gymnastics, they just aren't competitive. Some girls are naturally tiny and probably don't have to work as hard at staying tiny while also becoming powerfully strong. I'd guess it's at the border of the two, where you have a very talented girl who is just right on the margin of being too large or having too much body fat or developing earlier that you get into the severe stuff that could be abusive? Sometimes?

Yeah I'm sure you're right, actually. I have some friends whose daughter got into gymnastics around the age of 10... and then grew to be nearly 6 feet tall by the age of 15. She had no chance at all, but I didn't think about how probably even if she had stayed small she had no chance due to not starting till she was 10. She still enjoys it as far as I know, and since everyone could plainly see she was way too big to be competitive, I doubt anyone ever pressured her particularly. It's a healthy sport and passtime for her.

I mean, I don't really care about the NCAA because they've fully demonstrated their incompetence and it should be abolished, but I mean, if you are a school official who learns of abuse of students / minors and do not report it, you should not allowed to be in a position of power over students. These fuckers are even pulling an Alberto "I don't recall" Gonzalez on this whole thing.

quote:

Two years later, runner Christie Achenbach sounded an alarm when she told her coach about Nassar’s conduct in 1999.

Achenbach, a track and cross country athlete, had hurt her right hamstring and seen 15 other medical specialists before MSU athletic center staff referred her to Nassar.

During her appointment, Nassar told her that he was going to do something different for her pain, she said in an interview.

“He said his new way of treating people was going internally and manipulating the pelvic floor in order to help with any problem a female might have,” said Achenbach, then 21. “He said he had to go in, but he didn’t tell me that the way he was going to go in was not using lubricant like a doctor would. He just kept rubbing back and forth — that’s when I knew something was going on ... Then he put his fingers up inside me.”

Immediately afterward, Achenbach called her parents. She then said she called her coach, Kelli Bert, and told her that Nassar had rubbed her and inserted his fingers inside her, Achenbach said in an interview.

“He’s an Olympic doctor and he should know what he is doing,” Achenbach, now 40, said Bert told her.

Bert, who worked for MSU for one year as an assistant coach, told The News she doesn’t remember Achenbach complaining about Nassar. She also said she didn’t know Nassar was an Olympic doctor.

“I don’t recall any of that,” said Bert. “If he had done something sexual, I believe I would have reported that immediately.”

Every sport requires an insane amount of training to be All World good. The "problem" with gymnastics is that it favors strength to weight ratio while most sports rely on raw strength. That ratio is higher in children, so the population undergoing that degree of training is younger than in say football or basketball.

The other real and significant problem is that the adults in charge of monitoring the overall well being of the children are more concerned with making money or even predatory behavior. Even some of the parents are exploitative and care more about fame than the child's success or health.

I think I may have brought this up before, so apologies in advance, but I'm really upset about all this and I need to talk about it, I hope that's okay.

One of my best friends in high school was sexually abused by her doctor and no one believed her (save me and one or two other friends) and it loving destroyed her. Her parents called her a liar and made her keep going to him and the cops refused to do anything. She tried to kill herself multiple times and it was one of the most painful things I've ever seen someone go through as my friend went from a really personable, friendly and happy person to living in hell.

Over the course of two years I basically watched my friend die. She was still alive at the end but that piece of poo poo killed the person who I went camping with and made jokes with in class and replaced her with a zombie. My therapist also thinks that having to keep my friend afloat (as her parents wouldn't let her talk to a therapist and "spread her lies") probably contributed to a lot of my own emotional problems as a 15 year-old kid is completely unqualified to do that in a healthy way.

I still know her doctor's name and I honestly hope he has the most painful, miserable death imaginable.

These people at MSU and US Gymnastics who knew are utter pieces of poo poo and failures as human beings, and I'm trying to come up with even more language for how I feel but I'm failing to put into words just how deeply, deeply evil they are. They are just as guilty and complicit as Nasser himself. These women trusted these officials and went to them and in the most important moment of their lives all of these people chose to be cowards and cover it up to defend a loving monster. My friend told me the worst part wasn't the abuse itself, it was going to people she trusted and having them all but laugh in her face and do nothing.
