Yeah, Bezos is on record as saying they want to find the next Game of Thrones: Basically the next watercooler show. As a result, it's been an utter bloodbath over there. Some of the shows they axed, like Z: The Beginning of Everything, were utterly dire, but they've also been killing some good stuff like Good Girls Revolt and The Last Tycoon. I'm actually amazed that The Tick got a second season.

Vulture had an article about this where they point out that streaming services are getting old enough now that they 1) no longer need to hold onto any niche thing they can get, and 2) have accumulated enough data at this point that they probably have a clearer picture of what keeps subscribers and what doesn't. So the days of practically any series getting at least 3 seasons may be over.

Yeah, that was a pretty bad article at Vulture. Sure, Bezos is looking for more mainstream things. But they have a lot of other small shows that have not been canceled. The problem with I Love Dick and One Mississippi was that they weren't good. They gave One Mississippi one more season than it probably deserved, probably just because out of respect to Tig Notaro and it had an incredibly small budget. Season 2 failed to attract any attention, so there it goes on the chopping block.

Yeah, they're streaming, but people still need to watch them, otherwise why would they keep pumping money into things that aren't making them any money?

It looked expensive to make, and they probably have an idea by now whether the viewership is going to justify making more.

HBO Go has a really mind boggling documentary called ‘There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane’.

Long story short in 2009 a woman named Diane Schuler was driving in the wrong direction, crashed her car head-on into an SUV and eight people were killed: her, her daughter, three nieces, and all three men in the SUV. She had a BAC of .19 and a high level of THC in her system, and they found a smashed vodka bottle near her seat.

The husband and sister-in-law seemed absolutely nuts. They’re pretty adamant that she didn’t drink or do drugs and there was no way Diane would drink and drive with the kids in the car. Experts think she was trying to self-medicate for a tooth abscess.

Though the biggest WTF moment is they showed photos of her dead body

My issue with JCVJ being canceled isn't that the show is going away, though I did think it was pretty good. Rather, I think it sucks because Van Damme really did well in that washed-up, bumbling caricature.

I hope he's able to parlay his turn on the show into more TV/film roles.

Yeah, it's really good, I just watched it a second time last night because my wife wasn't home the first time. Just a solid, decent B+ movie and Jenny Slate is absolutely dead-on (watch the documentary; while Jack Black kinda looks nothing like the real guy - real guy is thin and very handsome - Slate looked almost exactly like her).

It improves steadily but it never gets completely away from moments of nerdbait. Everyone seems to "get" their characters after a few episodes and helps smooth out some weak moments/forced jokes.

The herpes joke never gets funnier though.

What food oriented shows on Netflix do y'all like? My wife recently got me hooked on The Great British Baking Show. I've seen a few of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown which I loved and none of Alton Brown's stuff. I know there are several documentaries to choose from as well.

Someone Feed Phil is a fun one on Netflix. He’s just so goddamn excited to be eating everything. Plus he FaceTimes with his parents and explains mangosteens and lychees and stuff to them. There’s another British show called like ‘Family Cooking Challenge’ or something along those lines and it’s in the same vein as GBBS.

And if you have Hulu there’s a few seasons of Chopped, Cutthroat Kitchen, and Worst Cooks in America if those kinda shows are your jam.

I really like to put them on when I’m doing housework or just want a little background noise because you don’t have to pay too much attention. Guy’s Grocery Games is a guilty pleasure of mine. Cutthroat is always great when those ding dongs freak out and bid $15,000 in the first round.

I'm a huge fan of Chef's Table and am still bummed there's not a new season even announced yet. I'm a huge ramen guy and the Ivan Orkin episode is great. Got to attend a pop up night of his in Boston about a year ago.

I found the channel Munchies on YouTube which is made by Vice. There's some good poo poo on there like "Chef's Night Out" where chefs get hammered and go out to their favorite restaurants. Also every cooking episode with Matty Matheson is pure gold.

Off topic but the Godzilla anime is atrociously boring.

This is only tangentially related to food tv chat, but I can recommend the first we feast hot ones series on youtube. I think the interviewer is punching above his weight class and has a bright future. The format is surprisingly engaging. I'm torn between saying start with Russell Brand or build up to it. Let's split the difference and go with watch 1 or 2 to see if you like it, then watch the Russell Brand episode.
