He also said "we diverged from Lobsters about 350 million years ago and have a common ancestor" and uses it to argue that, because of this, there is no argument for not having a strictly hierarchical view of the world. I don't quite get how the presenter didn't end up saying "Your appealing to nature in a different species, why the gently caress should I take you in the least bit seriously?"

Pook Good Mook posted:America is the 3rd or 4th largest (depending on measurement method) country in the world and unlike the countries that are largest (Russia, Canada, China), almost all of the US is already developed or easily can be so the population is incredibly spread out. There's a valid argument that it probably isn't a great thing that the country developed the way it did, but public transportation just isn't feasible in a good portion of America, even if there was political and financial will to do it. i agree with you that america currently can't support public transit, due to a legacy of incredibly poor decisions in terms of urban planning (frequently motivated by greed and racism) my point is, what if we stopped doing the stupid thing, and did the smart thing instead. how wonderful would that be saying "america is too spread out for mass transit" is the same as saying "america is too entrenched in for-profit health insurance to support single payer". like, yeah, that's an observation of fact, but what if we started taking the steps to correct this bad outcome

No, he didn't. You're doing exactly what the interviewer was doing: willfully mischaracterizing his statements and then attacking the strawman you just created. Here's the link to the lobster part of the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMcjxSThD54&t=1556s What he said isn't "Because lobsters there's no argument for not having a strictly hierarchical view of the world." What he said is "The idea that heirarchical structures are a social construct of Western patriarchy is wrong. Evolutionary biology shows that neurological structures chemistry arose at a early evolutionary level to recognize and struggle for position and status within a hierarchy." It's a descriptive statement, not a proscriptive one.

It's a descriptive statement, not a proscriptive one. I confess I have read a fair amount of Peterson's work in the before now and because of it I have difficulty not thinking he's a arsehole straight out of the gate. I sincerely doubt that even the most committed Marxist or even Anarchist would say that "hierarchy" is the creation of the Western Patriarchy. However those things do still exist and are, for the most part, shite things that shouldn't if we are going to be moral people. Just because something is natural does not make it good and later on in the interview he attempts to say that because of we can change some things but we have to do things in a certain way and "Biologically it sets the rule of the game". He is asserting that the way things work is a "natural" set up. I would personally argue that this is an appeal to nature fallacy, it is him asserting that "biology makes the rules, not me" to justify the current state of the hierarchies that we have. It does not help that we associate "naturalness" with "goodness" but that is a weakness in our own language. Nuevo posted:Yes, facts only matter if they support the correct viewpoint. It depends on what the "facts" are. Too many people say things like "bonobos are so lovely, they just have sex to solve things" which doesn't understand the fact that most of the bonobos they are loving are related to each other. It's like saying "black people commit more crime than white people!" and then you look into the stats and find out that the amount of crime is about the same and it is just that black people get arrested more. The three seconds worth of digging changes the entire fact. Josef bugman has a new favorite as of 18:34 on Jan 21, 2018 |

Double-beaten but: http://iaicac.org/news/Pages/news-20100525.aspx On May 7, 2007, a state search warrant was served at an Iowa City residence pursuant to a gambling investigation. Numerous items were seized including a computer tower and flash drive. Koch later pled guilty to state charges for illegal gambling and violation of state drug tax stamp. Pursuant to a request to dispose of seized property in January 2008, state agents found child pornography on a flash drive seized out of Koch's residence in May 2007. Later forensic examination by the Iowa Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force discovered over a hundred images of child pornography on both the seized flash drive and a seized computer tower. On December 12, 2008, a federal charges was filed for possession of child pornography. After a bench trial, Koch was found guilty on July 6, 2009. http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-8th-circuit/1545219.html Tl;DR Hey, we're going to give him computer back, better make sure it doesn't contain "records or materials related to his illegal gambling operation" on it. Woah, look at all this child porn!

I'm kinda taking joy in the fact that this person, who is an idiot, looked at the entire situation and figured 'yeah, nope, this is a bad thing and I shouldn't do it.' The guy did exactly what he was planning to (a couple little tiny 2mm pushes; if you count he actually does 5, which is likely what he "planned"). He's clearly an idiot that didn't consider how precarious the stack of weights were (look at him pushing on them as he sits down and grabbing the handle when he gets up. I doubt he'd have done that if he was concerned about the stack).
